*THE BOOK OF EVIL DOERS: ILLUMINATI*
*Chapter 1: The Signature*
_by Ilyasu H.S_
_∼2100 words_
The man in the grey suit came on a Tuesday.
Rain was hitting the windows of Carter’s Laundromat on 63rd Street, Chicago. The neon “OPEN 24 HRS” buzzed and flickered. It smelled like bleach and wet socks and the cheap coffee Aunt Tasha kept on the hot plate.
Maya was 17. She had her brother DeShawn’s medical bills spread out on the folding table. $4,237.89. Red letters. *PAST DUE. FINAL NOTICE.*
Insurance paid $2,100. The rest was theirs.
DeShawn was 8. Asthma. He’d been in the ER twice this month. The inhaler was $340. Without it, he wheezed at night like an old man.
Aunt Tasha was in the back, counting quarters. “Baby, we’ll figure it out,” she said. But her voice was thin.
The bell over the door dinged.
He didn’t shake the rain off. Grey suit. Grey tie. Grey eyes. He looked like the rain had made him.
“Miss Carter?” he said. His voice was soft. Too soft for South Side.
Maya stood up. “Can I help you?”
He set a leather folder on the wet counter. No water dripped off it.
“I’m from the Office of Deferred Assets,” he said. “We handle... quiet transactions.”
Aunt Tasha came out. “We ain’t buying nothing.”
“Oh,” the man smiled. “I’m not selling. I’m buying.”
He opened the folder. Inside was one sheet of paper. Thick. Cream colored. At the top, in black lettering:
*CONTRACT OF QUIET EXCHANGE*
Below it: *THE BOOK OF EVIL DOERS*
Maya laughed. Nervous. “That’s a movie title.”
The man didn’t laugh. “It’s a ledger. Miss Carter, your brother’s debt is $4,237.89. We can clear it. Today. In full.”
Aunt Tasha stepped forward. “And what do you want? Our firstborn?”
The man looked at Maya. “Her voice.”
The laundromat got quiet. Even the dryers.
“My... voice?” Maya said.
“For five years,” the man said. “You will be able to speak. But no one will hear you. Not really. The sound will leave your mouth and die in the air. To the world, you are mute. To us, you have paid.”
“That’s insane,” Aunt Tasha said. “Get out.”
The man turned a page. “Or. We take the apartment. We take the laundromat. We take the boy to county care while you work 3 jobs to pay us back with 27% interest. Your choice.”
He slid a pen across the counter. It was black. Cold. It didn’t look like it came from a store.
Maya looked at the bills. At DeShawn’s picture taped to the register. Him in the hospital bed, giving a thumbs up, oxygen in his nose.
She thought about eviction notices. About foster care. About Aunt Tasha working nights at the gas station.
She picked up the pen.
“Baby, no,” Aunt Tasha whispered.
Maya signed. *Maya J. Carter*
The ink was grey. Not black. It sank into the paper and disappeared.
The man closed the folder. “Pleasure doing business.”
He left a card. No name. Just a symbol. An eye, inside a triangle, inside a circle.
*THE BOOK OF EVIL DOERS*
_Illuminati Division - Chicago Chapter_
Then he was gone. The bell didn’t ding.
---
*THE FIRST SILENCE*
Maya woke up the next morning and tried to say “Good morning.”
Nothing came out. Or something came out, but the room ate it.
At school, her teacher called roll. “Maya Carter?”
Maya raised her hand. The teacher frowned. “Use your voice.”
Maya opened her mouth. Wrote in her notebook: _I did._
By 3rd period, word spread. “Maya’s mute now.”
Kids were cruel. “Cat got your tongue?”
She wanted to scream. But the scream died before it reached them.
At home, DeShawn ran to her. “Maya! Look! I can breathe!” He held up his new inhaler. The bill was gone. Paid in full.
Maya hugged him. Hard. And cried without sound.
That night, Aunt Tasha sat with her at the kitchen table.
“Did you... did you hear anything? When you signed?”
Maya shook her head.
“Did you feel anything?”
Maya thought. And nodded. Like a cold hand had touched the back of her throat. And taken something.
---
*THE CARD*
Three days later, another letter. No stamp. It was under the laundromat door.
Cream paper. Same eye in triangle.
_Miss Carter,_
_Payment received. Debt cleared._
_Interest accrues monthly. First payment due: 30 days._
_Payment: One dream. Specify upon collection._
_- The Book_
Maya didn’t understand. “Interest? What interest?”
That night she dreamed of nothing. Black. No sound. No color.
She woke up gasping. DeShawn was asleep, breathing easy.
---
*THE BASEMENT ON COTTAGE GROVE*
Aunt Tasha knew people. She took Maya to a church basement on Thursday.
Fluorescent lights. Folding chairs. A coffee pot that had been burning since 1998.
Sign on the wall: *THE QUIET TABLE - Free. No Selling. No Contracts.*
“People come here when the system eats them,” Aunt Tasha said. “Medical debt. Eviction. They tried to sell you something, didn’t they?”
Maya nodded and wrote: _A man. My voice. For my brother’s bills._
An old man looked up from the coffee. Mr. Luis. Bus driver.
“I sold my patience,” he said. “To pay my daughter’s tuition. Now I yell at everyone. Can’t stop.”
A woman with braids: “I sold my sleep. For rent. I haven’t dreamed in 6 months.”
A teenager: “I sold my spot on the basketball team. For shoes.”
Maya wrote: _Who are they?_
Mr. Luis leaned in. “They call themselves a lot of things. The Market. The Office. The Book.”
He tapped the table. “But we call them what they are. Evil doers. And they keep a book. With all our names.”
---
*THE FIRST MEETING*
The Grey Suit man came to the Quiet Table on week 2.
He didn’t sit. He stood by the door.
“Miss Carter,” he said. “You’re interfering with business.”
Maya stood up. She couldn’t speak, so she held up her notebook: _YOU’RE STEALING FROM US._
The man smiled. “We’re providing a service. You needed money. We gave it. This is commerce.”
Mr. Luis stood too. “This is robbery.”
“Is it?” The man pulled out his folder. Opened it. Inside was a page. Maya’s name. Under it: *ASSET: VOICE. VALUE: $4,237.89. STATUS: COLLECTED.*
Below that, in smaller writing: *INTEREST DUE: 1 DREAM. DATE: 11/02/2026*
“That’s my daughter’s birthday,” the woman with braids whispered. “They took it.”
The man closed the folder. “See you next month, Miss Carter. Don’t be late.”
He left. The door didn’t make a sound.
---
*THE BOOK*
Maya couldn’t sleep. On the 29th day, she followed him.
He went into a building downtown. No name on the door. Just a keypad.
She waited. At 2am, a delivery man came. She slipped in behind him.
Basement. Cold.
And there it was.
On a pedestal. Under glass.
A book. 3 feet tall. Leather black. No title.
But when she got close, the cover shifted. And words appeared:
*THE BOOK OF EVIL DOERS*
Pages were turning on their own.
She saw names. Hundreds. Thousands.
*Luis M. - Patience. Sold 2024.*
*Keisha R. - Sleep. Sold 2025.*
*Maya J. Carter - Voice. Sold 2026.*
And at the bottom of her page, in grey ink that was still wet:
*INTEREST: 1 DREAM. OVERDUE.*
A hand grabbed her shoulder.
“Miss Carter,” the Grey Suit said. “You weren’t supposed to see the Book.”
---
*THE CHOICE*
He didn’t yell. He didn’t call security.
He just looked tired.
“Do you know how many people we’ve helped?” he said. “How many kids got medicine? How many families kept their homes?”
“By stealing from them,” Maya wrote on her phone. Showed him.
“By trading,” he said. “The world runs on trades. You wanted to save your brother. We facilitated that. The cost is small.”
Maya looked at the Book. At her name.
Then she looked at the door. At the stairs. At the way out.
She could run.
Or she could do something stupid.
She picked up the pen from the pedestal. The same black, cold pen.
And before the man could move, she wrote under her name:
*I REVOKE THIS CONTRACT.*
The grey ink hissed. Smoke came off the page.
The man’s eyes went wide. “You can’t—”
The lights went out.
When they came back on, the Book was closed.
And Maya’s throat hurt. Like she’d been screaming.
She ran.
---
*THE AFTERMATH*
She made it home. Vomited in the sink.
When she tried to talk, a sound came out. Raspy. Broken. But hers.
“DeShawn?” she whispered.
He ran in. “Maya! You’re talking!”
Aunt Tasha called the hospital. The bill was back. $4,237.89. *PAST DUE.*
But Maya was talking.
Three days later, the Grey Suit came back to the laundromat.
No folder. No pen.
“You broke it,” he said. “Do you know what you’ve done?”
“I took it back,” Maya rasped.
“You didn’t just take your voice,” he said. “You put a c***k in the Book.
And now they’re angry.”
“Who?”
He looked at the ceiling. Like someone was listening.
“The Evil Doers,” he said. “The ones who own the Book. The Illuminati.”
He left a new card. This one was red.
*YOU ARE NOW LISTED: RESISTANCE*
Then he left.
---
*END OF CHAPTER 1*
That night, Maya couldn’t sleep.
Not because of the Book.
Because for the first time in weeks, she could hear herself think.
Outside, Chicago was quiet.
But somewhere downtown, in a room with no windows,
a 3-foot black book had a new line written in red ink:
*Maya J. Carter - VOICE RECLAIMED. STATUS: THREAT.*
And the page turned.
