Kayla smiled, her eyes unfocused as she thought back over the years. “She came home with me that afternoon and we’ve been best friends ever since.”
“What’s her natural hair colour?” Brett asked.
“Sandy blond. But other than photos of her as a little kid, I’ve only ever seen her hair a shade of red.” She reached out to link her fingers through Brett’s. “You okay? You looked… I don’t know. Funny… no… strange for a second.”
“Yeah.” Brett pulled away, rising to his feet. He strode to the window and stared outside, his back to her.
