chapter 28
Ivory POV
At first, it scared the absolute crap out of me.. being on top of a dragon flying high in the sky. Ducks passed beneath us, bald eagles nested in the tallest trees, and I could almost brush the very tips of them with my fingertips. Everything looked so tiny from up there. I even stretched my arms out for a few minutes, just enjoying the ride.
We flew higher.. above the clouds. The air was thinner, but I was okay.
When we finally reached his kingdom, Ladon descended gracefully toward the ground. He laid flat so I could climb down. The moment my feet touched the earth, I heard a man’s voice.
“My king, you have been gone for months. We are happy you are finally back. But why is a werewolf riding on your dragon? Why is she here?”
A growl rumbled through Axel’s chest. I watched his eyes shift from green to molten gold. Ladon’s scales shimmered beneath us, tense and ready.
“She is not just a werewolf, asshole,” Axel snarled. “She is my f*****g mate. Do not disrespect her again.”
The man’s eyes widened in fear. I knew Axel could crush his throat without blinking. And honestly? I really didn’t want that happening on my first day here.
“I…I am sorry, my king. It is a pleasure to finally meet your mate. I know you have searched for her for centuries. Welcome, my queen. Welcome to the kingdom of dragons. It is an honor to finally have our queen.”..Another man stepped forward.
“Welcome, my queen. Please forgive this dumbass..he doesn’t know when to shut up.”..That made me smile slightly.
“Rise, Berry and Nick. You know I hate it when you bow,” Axel said. “This is Ivory, my mate and soon the Queen of the dragon world. If you’ll excuse us, I’d like to spend time with my mate and show her around.”
“When you are free, we need you in the office,” one of them added.
Axel sighed. “Fine. Head there now. Anything you have to say to me will be said in front of the queen. I hide nothing from her.”
I tried not to smile too big at that…As we walked toward the breathtaking castle, he leaned down and murmured,
“I’m sorry, honey. I wanted to show you around first.”
I laughed. “It’s fine. Apparently queen duties start immediately.”
We entered the castle, and I barely had time to look around before we were ushered into a large office.
“Are you sure you want me in here?” I asked softly. “This seems like business.”
“You should be here,” Axel said firmly. “I want you to know everything.”..I nodded and sat beside him.
“Alright,” Axel said. “Spill it.”
Berry cleared his throat. “For starters, the treaty with the other dragon coven. They want you to marry their daughter to make her queen. The elders declined. Now Henry is furious. He wants a video call. He insists that once you see his daughter, you’ll fall in love with her.”..My jaw nearly dropped.
Nick continued, “Second, rogue problems. Handled. They’re locked in the dungeons. Collars prevent them from shifting.”
“Collars?” I asked…All three men looked at me.
“My name is Ivory,” I said evenly. “Please call me Ivory. No need for ‘queen’ yet.”..They actually smiled.
Nick explained, “The collars are for rogue dragons, wolves, etc. Spike collars. If they try to shift, it stops them. They can’t destroy anything that way.”
I nodded slowly. “I see. And this video call?”
“As soon as you returned.”
“Well,” I said, straightening. “Let’s do it. But Axel won’t be alone.”
A screen rose from the desk. I scooted closer to him. The screen flickered to life, revealing Alpha Ceder and his veiled daughter.
“Alpha Ceder,” Axel began calmly. “I hear you wished to speak with me regarding your daughter.”...Ceder’s eyes shifted to me.
“Who is that woman beside you? You are the king. A woman should not sit beside you during business.”..I laughed, covering my mouth.
“For your information, Ceder,” I said sweetly, “I am his mate. You will not disrespect me again. And as for your daughter marrying my mate? That will never happen. Is there anything else?”
“No one has announced he found his mate,” Ceder snapped. “You bear no mark. No crown. Perhaps you have him under a spell.”
That time, I didn’t hide my laugh.
“No spell works on the Dragon King,” I replied. “Ask him. He’s sitting right here smiling at me.”..Axel chuckled and leaned forward.
“She speaks the truth. The only one who can harm me is my mate. Send the treaty paperwork. I’ll review it. But marrying your daughter is not happening.”
Ceder huffed. “Very well. It will be sent. My daughter needs a mate. Is your beta or gamma available?”
I glanced at Berry and Nick. They were wildly shaking their heads and crossing their arms in panic. I nearly lost it.
“They are fully mated,” Axel said smoothly. “Perhaps your daughter should find her own path.”..Ceder nodded stiffly and ended the call.
The room went silent for a second…Then the guys clapped.
“You did amazing,” Nick said. “A true queen.”..I blinked.
“Is there anything else?”
“Just questioning the rogues.”
Axel shook his head. “Tomorrow. I want time with my mate. She works tomorrow.”..The guys looked stunned.
“Yes, I work,” I said with a grin. “Near my college. I’m studying to be a doctor.”..
They stared at me like I’d grown wings.
I couldn’t help shaking my head. These dragon men had no idea what to do with me….But honestly?..I think I’m going to love it here.
