chapter 29
Axel POV
Was she for real? She handled that like a pro… like a true queen. Ceder didn’t like it at all. I knew for centuries he had wanted me to marry his daughter. I also knew my parents would kick my ass if I did that…they always told me to wait for my true mate. I almost hadn’t… until I went to Alpha Ryan’s pack. I would have picked anyone but his daughter.
He thinks that if she becomes queen, he could move into my castle. He’ll try anything to kill me and take the throne…but that’s never going to happen. For centuries, only my family has ruled over the dragons, and we’ve ruled fairly. I’m not letting that go for someone who thinks humans and werewolves should be slaves to dragons.
When the call ended, the fax started going off…he was sending the paperwork for the treaty. Once everything was through, I took it and began reading the file. I left nothing unread..that’s what my father taught me: always read the fine print.
He was asking for money from me for his pack: two million dollars. He didn’t explain why, but I knew he was in debt. His wife likes to go shopping a lot, so he needed the bills paid. Fine..I’ll pay them. That way, his wife won’t get her hands on the money.
Rogues keep getting into his land…rogue wolves, of course. I keep forgetting wolves live here as well. We’ll have to deal with this together, and I’ll have to teach him how to keep them off his land.
I noticed something about his daughter..he wants me to find someone for her to marry. I crossed that out. She needs to find her own path, her own fate. She needs to tell her father this herself. I’ll let Ivory talk to her once we’re there in the morning. I don’t want her late for work, so morning it is…I called him on my cell in front of Ivory, putting it on speaker so everyone could hear. He picked up on the second ring.
“King Axel, did you look over the treaty?”
“Yes, I did. My mate, my beta, and my gamma will be there bright and early so we can handle this rogue problem. Make sure you’re wide awake and your tail is bushy. Have your warriors ready..we’ll teach you how to keep the rogues off your land. It won’t take long, so be up and ready.”
“As you wish, my king. I and my warriors will be ready.”
“Very well. See you in the morning.” The phone clicked.
“Alright, guys, you heard me. I’m spending time with my mate now. If anyone interrupts me, your heads better have a damn good reason..like a rogue attack. Is that clear?”
Berry and Nick laughed and saluted before leaving. I turned my attention back to my mate.
“Listen,” I said, “the reason I scheduled it in the morning is I don’t want you late for work. I won’t have you thinking you have to put your life on hold just because you’re going to be queen. But, we do have colleges nearby, and many jobs too. That way, you can continue your life while being queen. Once the ceremony is over, if you want, I can fly you to the highest mountain and we’ll climb it together. I can also take you to the Statue of Liberty so you can touch it with your hands. When you graduate, I’ll fly you around the world.”
I watched her eyes light up…they were a beautiful hazel green. I could also see her wolf on the surface…dark blue eyes with a little silver around them.
“Hello, Kelly. I know you’re there. You can come out and talk if you want. I won’t bite… unless you want me to.”
“I don’t want to be bitten just yet. Save that for my human. Don’t let her down, okay? The girls in her pack… all they ever talked about was cleaning and cooking. They could never go anywhere or chase their dreams before they met their mates. Let her finish her goals before you make her have babies.”
“Babies? Kelly, I want us to live our lives first before we decide to have babies. I want her to live her life with me first. Are you trying to scare me talking about baby stuff?”
She laughed, shaking her head. “No, I’m not trying to scare you. I’m just saying…if you hurt her in any way, if you lie to her, if you betray her in any way, I will find a way to kill you. She’s been through too much…She's seen to much heartbreak, betrayal, lies. That’s why she didn’t want a mate.”
“Kelly, I give you my word. I will never hurt her. I will never betray her. Can I have my mate back now, please?”
She laughed and stepped back, letting Ivory come forward again. I pulled her into my arms.
“I’m so sorry. I didn’t know she was going to say all that…she said she just wanted to talk to you,” I chuckled.
“No need to apologize, baby. She’s just protective of me. Come on…you want to see where we’ll be sleeping tonight? Maybe after we deal with Alpha Ceder, we can go dress shopping. It’s only for the ceremony…your choice when it happens. I don’t want you to feel rushed.”
She thought for a moment, then asked, “You said there’s a college close by. Could you get me in? How fast can that happen? And jobs? That would be good… but I don’t want you thinking I’m trying to smother you either.”
“Most of the guys in that pack always told their girls they were smothering them. That’s cruel. I haven’t told my father about it because I didn’t want to be a snitch, but they treated their mates badly.”
“How about you call your father right now and tell him what you just told me? I’m sure he’ll straighten them out.”
“Alright… it’s not like I’m there anymore. What could it hurt? They need to be faithful to their mates, or reject them properly. Let’s call my parents.”
