Chapter 6
Hayley POV
I awoke with a start. My phone read 3 a.m. I glanced over at William…he was sound asleep. I sighed, trying to fall back into slumber, but it was impossible.
“I might as well get up,” I muttered, thinking of my son. He was seventeen now. Funny, really…Jasmine and I had gone into labor at the same time. I never did figure out who had their baby first, but I wouldn’t trade that day for the world.
I snuck a peek at my son. He was out cold, likely up late last night with a bonfire and friends. He promised he wouldn’t stay out too late… but teenagers never do. As long as he wasn’t fighting or doing anything dangerous, I was okay with it.
Shutting the door behind me, I headed to the kitchen. Something felt off…a brewing danger that sent chills down my spine. I needed to figure it out before it escalated beyond control.
Since I was awake, I decided everyone else should be too. I started cooking eggs, bacon, sausage, and a few pancakes.
Before I could place the plates on the table, they appeared….both William and my son…glaring at me.
“Mom, come on… can I just go back to bed? I’ve only been home for three hours,” my son groaned.
I laughed, handing him a plate.
“Take it back to your room, just in case you get hungry later.”
He left, but William stayed. He took his plate, sat down, ate, cleaned up, and then just stood there, looking at me.
“You felt it too,” I said, my voice tense. “Something dangerous is coming. How could you sleep through it?”
“I wasn’t sleeping through it,” he said quietly. “It’s more powerful than Con. And we all need to be ready.”
Con POV
I didn’t know why she came to my office. I’d left early to avoid her, thankful for everything she had done for me…but this… this had gone too far.
I told her I didn’t want a mate. Yes, she marked me so I could regain my wolf. Yes, she used her money to build my business. But I only wanted her here to make me stronger. The pack comes first. Always.
And yet, every day, she stood there asking questions, pushing boundaries, forcing me into… well, things I didn’t want. Sure, the s*x was good..she could make me weak..but I had had better.
When my rep called to tell me she was here, I nearly lost it. I didn’t care about her, not like that. I just wanted her out.
“Why are you doing this, Con?” she demanded. “I’m the one who found you in the woods. I’m the one who marked you. I told you I’d help you get your revenge… and this is how you treat me? I’ve done nothing to you!”
“Penny, it’s not like that,” I said coldly. “I still want my revenge. Twenty rogues are already here, part of our pack. They don’t smell like outsiders anymore.”
I smirked, knowing she wouldn’t be impressed. She stayed. She always stayed.
“We need over two hundred. Twenty isn’t enough. And remember this..I’ve told you before, but I’ll say it again: You’re here to make me stronger. That’s it. I don’t believe in mates. Not after what happened to me.”
Her voice trembled. “So what are you saying, Con… are you rejecting me?”
I laughed. The sound echoed like a slap in the face. I was about to say something else, something permanent… when a knock sounded at the door. I told her to ignored it. Let them wait.
“Penny, just go home. Wait for me. Cook dinner…you know what I like. I’ll be home shortly.”
She left without a word. I barely noticed her expression; I was too busy setting up a meeting for a business I wanted to buy. Of course, when I got home, I’d charm her, make her forgive me, maybe bring that necklace she’d been wanting. She would be fine.
Hours later, a sharp pain tore through my chest and down to my stomach. My wolf howled in panic.
“Moron,” Kolf screamed in my head. “She rejected us… she left before we could claim her. Are you sure that vampire is dead?
When the Vampire King finds out his son is dead, he’ll come for the one who killed him.”
I tried to calm myself. She’s probably at home, dinner on the table… maybe even wearing something to get my attention. Yeah… she’ll be fine. she will forgive me, i know she would never leave me, I had her right where I want her, and when I am done with her, Than I will reject her,
