CHAPTER 1
Kieran’s heart pounded in his chest as the world around him began to blur. The familiar sounds of his village—the chirping birds, the soft rustle of trees, and the distant chatter of townsfolk—faded into nothingness, replaced by an eerie silence. Before he could process what was happening, a strange, mechanical hum filled his ears, growing louder with each passing second.
“What's going on?” he muttered, his voice barely audible as his surroundings began to shift.
A sudden force yanked at his body, as though the very fabric of reality was twisting and pulling him into another dimension. His breath quickened, panic setting in as his vision darkened, only to be replaced by a blinding light. He reached out instinctively, but his hands met nothing but emptiness.
And then, just as suddenly as it all began, everything stopped. The silence that followed was suffocating, as if the world had been swallowed whole. Slowly, Kieran blinked his eyes open, his gaze meeting a vast, empty expanse of light. It stretched endlessly in every direction, a realm without boundaries, with no sky, no ground, and no walls—just an infinite void.
“What the hell... is this?” Kieran whispered to himself, his voice trembling.
A low rumble echoed through the emptiness, and before Kieran could react, a glowing, holographic screen materialized before him. It flickered momentarily, as if the system itself was still stabilizing, and then solidified into clear text.
Welcome, Kieran Albright.
His heart skipped a beat. The screen displayed his name. How did it know his name? A chill ran down his spine. He didn’t have time to dwell on it, though, as another line of text appeared beneath his name.
You have been chosen to join the System as the Eternal Warrior. Prepare to unlock your potential.
He stared at the message, confusion clouding his thoughts. “Eternal Warrior? What does that even mean?” he muttered to himself, glancing around in search of answers. But the vast void remained silent.
Suddenly, the screen flashed again, and a new message appeared. This time, the words were accompanied by an image of a golden sword, shimmering with ethereal light.
Your first task: Defeat the First Guardian. Defeat is not an option.*
The image of the sword dissolved into thin air, leaving only the text. Kieran blinked, his mind struggling to comprehend what was happening. He wasn’t sure if he was dreaming or if something far beyond his understanding was at play. But the words on the screen felt too real, too urgent to ignore.
Defeat the First Guardian? he thought, his heart racing. Who even are these Guardians? What is this place?
Before he could ask any more questions, the space around him began to shimmer. The air vibrated with energy as a figure materialized in front of him. It was tall, clad in shimmering armor that seemed to shift and reflect light, and its face was hidden behind a smooth, featureless helmet. The figure raised its arm, and Kieran instinctively backed away, his muscles tensing.
“Are you the First Guardian?” Kieran asked, his voice firm but filled with uncertainty.
The Guardian did not respond with words, but Kieran felt a pulse of energy emanate from its body. The temperature around him dropped, and the hairs on the back of his neck stood on end. He had no time to process the change before the Guardian’s gauntlet-clad hand shot forward, faster than Kieran could react.
His instincts kicked in, and he rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding the strike. The Guardian’s speed was unlike anything Kieran had ever witnessed. He felt the cold wind of the blow graze his skin, sending a shock of adrenaline through his veins.
“What the hell?!” Kieran shouted, scrambling to his feet. He could feel the raw power of the Guardian as if it were pressing against him, forcing him to move faster, think quicker. His mind raced, but the only thought that consumed him was survival.
The Guardian’s voice, low and almost mechanical, resonated in the space around him. “Defeat me, or your journey will end here.”
Kieran’s heart skipped a beat. The words hung in the air, suffocating him with their weight. He wasn’t just fighting for a title—he was fighting for his life.
Without thinking, Kieran’s body moved on its own. His legs carried him forward, his hands reaching for the sword that had appeared earlier in his mind. His fingers closed around the hilt, and in an instant, the ethereal weapon materialized in his grasp. It felt strangely familiar, as though it had always been his, waiting for him to wield it.
“You are not ready,” the Guardian warned, its voice colder than before.
But Kieran, driven by a surge of determination, swung the sword. It glowed with a brilliant light, leaving a streak of golden energy in its wake. The Guardian deflected the blow effortlessly, its gauntlet crackling with power as it blocked the strike with ease.
“You are weak.” The Guardian’s voice was not mocking, but a statement of fact.
Kieran gritted his teeth, the words stinging more than he cared to admit. I won’t lose, he thought fiercely. He could feel the power of the System coursing through him, pushing him beyond his limits. But the Guardian’s strength was overwhelming. With each blow, Kieran felt himself being pushed back, his body aching, his stamina waning.
He needed to find a way to win. But how?
“What is this power? How do I defeat you?” Kieran yelled, desperate for an answer. The Guardian’s response was chilling.
“Only by understanding your true strength will you be able to defeat me. But first, you must overcome your fear.”
Kieran’s mind raced, but he couldn’t understand what the Guardian meant. Fear? Was that the key?
His sword flashed once more as he swung it in another desperate strike, but the Guardian caught it mid-air, forcing Kieran to his knees. The world around him seemed to tilt as darkness closed in at the edges of his vision.
“This is where your journey ends.”
Kieran gasped for air, his vision blurry, his strength waning. In that moment, all he could hear was the pounding of his own heart—until the System’s voice broke through, crystal clear.
“You have failed the task. But do not despair. A second chance will be granted…”
Before Kieran could even process the words, a loud crack echoed through the space, followed by a deep voice from behind him.
“Not so fast.”
Kieran froze, his body tense as he turned toward the source of the new voice. The figure that emerged from the shadows was a man—tall, with a cruel smirk on his lips. His eyes gleamed with malicious intent.
“You’re not alone in this, Kieran. And I’m here to make sure you fail.”
Kieran’s breath caught in his throat as the figure stepped forward, raising a weapon of his own.
“You’ll never be the Eternal Warrior.”
