Chapter One: Moonlit Shadows
~ Chapter One: Moonlit Shadows ~ The crisp night air carried the faint scent of pine and earth as Evelyn Cross stepped into the woods behind her family's cabin. The moon hung high, full and luminous, casting silvery beams that danced across the forest floor. Her boots crunched against the frost-covered leaves, the sound barely audible over the rushing stream nearby. Tonight, the forest seemed alive, pulsing with an energy that set her heart racing. She shouldn’t have been out here—not alone, and especially not on a night like this. But the dream had been so vivid: the piercing amber eyes staring through her, the whisper of her name carried on the wind. She had awoken drenched in sweat, the urge to follow an unspoken call too powerful to resist. Evelyn paused at the edge of the clearing. Her breath fogged the air as she gazed at the old oak tree that stood at its center, its gnarled branches stretching toward the heavens like a sentinel guarding an ancient secret. Something rustled behind her, a sound too deliberate to be the wind. “Who's there?” she demanded, spinning around. Her voice echoed in the stillness. A figure emerged from the shadows, tall and broad-shouldered. He moved with the grace of a predator, his dark hair tousled as though he’d been running through the woods for hours. But it was his eyes that pinned her in place—those same amber eyes from her dream. They glowed faintly, otherworldly, as though reflecting the moonlight itself. “I told you not to come out here.” His voice was low, rough, like gravel rolling over silk. Evelyn’s heart thudded against her ribs. “You…you were in my dream.” The man stepped closer, his movements slow and deliberate. “It wasn’t a dream. You’re connected to me now, Evelyn. Whether you like it or not.” Her knees felt weak, but she refused to back down. “What does that even mean? Who are you?” He stopped just short of touching her, the air between them charged with an electricity that made her skin tingle. “My name is Kael. And you’ve just stepped into a world you can’t walk out of.” Before she could respond, a low growl rumbled from the darkness. Kael’s head snapped toward the sound, his muscles tensing. “Get behind me,” he ordered, his voice sharp. Evelyn hesitated, fear locking her in place. Another growl echoed through the trees, closer this time. She caught a glimpse of movement—dark shapes circling, their eyes glowing like embers in the night. Wolves, but larger than any she’d ever seen, their fur bristling and teeth bared. Kael’s body began to shift, his breathing ragged as bones cracked and reformed. His hands became claws, his teeth elongated, and his skin rippled with a layer of fur. In seconds, the man she’d been speaking to was gone, replaced by a towering wolf-like creature, his amber eyes burning brighter than ever. Evelyn stumbled back, her mind screaming at her to run. But as the pack lunged from the shadows, Kael met them head-on, a blur of claws and snarls. He moved with feral precision, his strength unmatched as he tore through the attackers. Yet, even as he fought, his gaze flicked to her, ensuring she was unharmed. The battle was over in minutes, the attackers retreating into the woods with yelps of pain. Kael stood in the aftermath, his chest heaving. Blood dripped from his claws, but his eyes softened as they met hers. “You’re not safe here anymore,” he said, his voice still laced with a guttural edge. “They’ll keep coming for you.” Evelyn’s lips parted, her mind racing with questions. “Why? What do they want from me?” Kael stepped closer, his hand brushing a strand of hair from her face. The touch sent a jolt through her, heat blooming where his skin met hers. “Because you’re mine, Evelyn,” he murmured, his voice filled with both determination and longing. “And they’ll do anything to take you away.”
