Chapter 5: Midnight Oak Grove

1124 Words
Darkness had swallowed Ironvein Pack whole long before midnight. I sat at my wooden table, the charred bark note lying beside my mother’s silver hairpin. Every heartbeat thudded loud in my ears. The cabin was silent, save for the faint, dull throb of the broken mate‑bond buried deep within my ribs. This could be a trap. Silas is a total stranger. If I get caught sneaking out to meet an outsider, the whole pack will brand me a traitor. Lira’s instinctive fear rippled through my mind, yet underneath the terror burned a desperate hunger for answers. But what if he is telling the truth? What if Kael never truly chose her? Three years of quiet devotion, every sleepless night, every wound the rejection left behind — I could not let all of it remain meaningless. I slipped on dark, unnoticeable clothing, pulled Mara’s heavy wool shawl over my head to conceal my features, and tucked my small silver dagger into the waistband of my trousers. I blew out my cabin candle, leaving the room plunged into shadow. The camp slept. Only a handful of torches burned along the main paths, and patrol guards paced their slow, predictable rounds. I stuck to the black shadows behind huts, holding my breath whenever guards drew near. The scent of pine and damp soil filled the air, drowning out the familiar alpha scent that still haunted every corner of this pack. Halfway toward the western oak grove, a low voice froze me mid‑step. “Elara.” My blood turned to ice. I spun around, hand flying to the hilt of my dagger, ready to defend myself. It was Mara. She stood partially hidden behind a thick birch trunk, her eyes wide with alarm. She must have spotted me slipping out of my cabin. “You cannot go to him,” she whispered, stepping closer, keeping her voice so low only I could hear. “A lone wandering wolf who digs into fated bond secrets? That kind of curiosity gets wolves killed.” “I have to know,” I breathed. “What if Kael’s choice is not really his own?” Mara’s face twisted with worry. “Even if that were true, what can you do? You are only an Omega. The council is already leaning toward approving Lila as Luna. Going behind the pack’s back to meet an outsider will destroy whatever little respect you still hold.” “What respect?” I bit the words out, sharp and bitter. “The pack only pities me, or gossips about me. I have nothing left to lose.” Mara stared at me, sorrow etched across her features. She saw how thoroughly broken I was, yet also saw the spark of defiance that had awakened inside me. After a long heavy pause, she sighed softly. “I will not stop you. But promise me one thing. If you sense danger, run. Do not stay to chase answers that might get you killed.” She pressed a small pouch of healing herbs into my palm. “Take this. Be careful.” With that, she melted back into the night, leaving me to continue onward alone. When I stepped beneath the ancient boughs of the western oak grove, moonlight filtered down through tangled branches, painting splotches of silver across the forest floor. Silas was already waiting for me, leaning against the massive trunk of the oldest tree. His dark cloak blended almost perfectly with the shadows, only his glowing silver‑grey eyes gave away his position. “You came,” he said, no surprise in his tone, as if he had already expected I would show. “I came for the truth,” I answered, keeping a safe distance between us, my fingers resting lightly on my dagger. “Tell me what you meant, about forces twisting the fated mate‑bond.” Silas pushed away from the tree and took one slow step forward. He made no sudden movements, careful not to trigger my omega wariness. “The Moon Goddess weaves fated bonds, yes. But ancient dark magic is capable of clouding an Alpha’s senses. It cannot fully erase a mate‑thread, but it can muffle it. It can make him crave another wolf instead of the one fate assigned to him.” My breath caught in my throat. Magic. That is what he is suggesting. “That sounds impossible,” I whispered. “Those are old bedtime stories for wolf pups. Dark magic vanished generations ago.” “Stories become myths when people choose to ignore what they fear,” Silas replied grimly. “Rumours have spread across the wild packs. A peculiar, subtle scent lingers around certain chosen Alphas — a faint, almost undetectable spell residue. Your Kael bears that scent. I caught it at the gate this afternoon.” A thousand disjointed memories exploded inside my head. Kael’s cold indifference toward me at the ceremony. The way he softened so completely for Lila out of nowhere. The flicker of genuine confusion on his face when Silas called out their bond in front of the guards. Could he have been enchanted? Lira stirred inside me, equal parts hope and disbelief. All those years, and he could not feel us because of a spell? Before Silas could elaborate further, a sharp, enraged alpha howl tore through the night air, echoing through the oak grove. Kael. Panic shot through every nerve in my body. From the edge of the trees, torchlight burst into view. Multiple heavy footsteps crashed over fallen leaves. Kael stood at the front, his wolf eyes blazing amber with unbridled fury, Lila close on his heels, and two pack guards right behind them. He had tracked me. “Elara!” Kael roared, his voice shaking with alpha rage. “What are you doing, sneaking out in the middle of night to meet a foreign male?” I froze, rooted to the spot, my whole body trembling. I had been discovered. Caught red‑handed with the mysterious outsider. In the eyes of the entire Ironvein Pack, this would look like betrayal. Lila’s gaze landed on me, cold and triumphant. A tiny, almost unnoticeable smirk tugged at the corner of her mouth. Silas instantly positioned himself half in front of me, shielding my body from Kael’s advancing wrath. “Leave her out of this,” Silas called to the approaching group. “She only sought answers for a bond that was stolen from her.” Kael’s rage burned hotter. His bones began to c***k, shifting, preparing for wolf transformation. The air thrummed with overwhelming alpha power. “You poison her mind with lies!” he snarled. “Guards, seize them both.”
