Chapter 1: The Moonlit Betrayal
The full moon hung low over the Ironvein Pack territory, spilling silver light across the stone courtyard where every member of the pack had gathered for the annual Moon Bond Ceremony. Laughter hummed through the crowd, warm and celebratory, yet my chest remained tight, coiled with nervous hope I had carried for three years.
I am Elara Voss, a quiet Omega of the Ironvein Pack. For as long as I could remember, my entire world had revolved around Kael Thorne—the future Alpha of our pack, the strongest wolf of our generation, and the man the Moon Goddess had bound to me as my fated mate.
Fated mates were sacred. Unbreakable. Or so every pack legend had always promised.
My wolf, Lira, stirred gently beneath my skin, soft and eager. He will see you tonight. He will claim you.
I believed her.
For three years, I had loved Kael silently and steadily. I had stayed up late bringing him healing herbs after his training battles, smiled through his busy days, and clung to the quiet, invisible bond that hummed between us whenever we were near. The mate‑thread had always been there — faint, yet warm, proof that we belonged to each other.
I had always thought he felt it too.
The crowd parted as Kael stepped into the centre of the courtyard. Tall, broad‑shouldered, his dark hair catching the moonlight, his amber wolf‑eyes sharp and commanding. Every gaze in the pack locked onto him. As the next Alpha, he was born to be admired, born to rule. My heart fluttered wildly, my fingers twisting in the soft fabric of my ceremony dress.
Tonight was supposed to be the night he finally acknowledged our bond.
Tonight, I had hoped, he would claim me as his Luna.
I took a small step forward, ready to meet his eyes, ready to let the bond between us bloom fully after years of waiting. But before I could lift my chin, another figure glided toward him — Lila Mercer, the pack’s most popular Beta female, beautiful, bold, and endlessly confident.
She slipped perfectly into the space beside Kael, her smile bright enough to outshine the moon.
And he did not move away.
My breath caught.
Worse still, he leaned slightly toward her. His cold amber eyes softened in a way I had never seen for me. When she whispered something quiet in his ear, he huffed a low, amused laugh. His whole body language was open and comfortable, and that shattered every quiet hope I had clung to.
The surrounding pack members began to murmur. Their voices were faint, yet unmissable.
“They look perfect together.”
“The future Alpha and his future Luna.”
“I always knew they would end up bonded.”
Each word sliced through me like a blade.
I stood frozen in the crowd, invisible. The mate‑bond that had always hummed warm between us suddenly flickered, turning cold and taut, like a string stretched to its breaking point. Lira whimpered inside me, confused and hurt.
Why is he looking at her? We are mates.
I could not understand. Fated mates did not look at other people like this. They did not laugh with others while their true mate stood alone and forgotten in the crowd.
I forced myself to move, swallowing the lump burning in my throat. I would not cry here. I would not break in front of the entire pack. I only needed one word. One glance. One small sign that he had not forgotten what we shared.
When the ceremony paused for a brief intermission, I gathered every ounce of my courage and walked toward him. My legs felt weak, my hands trembling. All I wanted was for him to see me, to notice the girl who had loved him loyally for years.
“Kael,” I called softly, my voice barely audible over the crowd.
He did not turn.
I stepped closer, repeating his name, quieter this time. “Kael.”
Finally, his head shifted. His amber eyes landed on me — yet there was no warmth, no recognition of the bond we shared. Only cold indifference, sharp and distant, as if I were nothing more than a stray wolf blocking his path.
Before I could speak a single word of everything I had spent years wanting to say, he stepped backward.
Away from me.
The movement was small, deliberate, and devastating.
Lila tilted her head, glancing at me with faint, mocking sympathy. “Do you need something, Elara? You should not interrupt Kael during the ceremony. He has important pack duties tonight.”
My throat went dry.
I was not interrupting. I was only trying to reach my mate.
I stared back at Kael, waiting for him to correct her. Waiting for him to say She is not interrupting. She is mine.
But he said nothing.
Instead, he lifted his hand and rested it lightly on Lila’s shoulder, a casual, possessive gesture that sent a fresh wave of agony tearing through my chest.
“Save your questions for later,” he said to me, his voice flat and unfeeling. “I am busy right now.”
Busy with her.
The unspoken meaning hung thick in the moonlit air, crushing every piece of the future I had imagined for us. For three years, I had believed our fated bond was enough. I had believed patience and loyalty would make him see me.
But in this moment, beneath the full moon at the pack’s most sacred annual ceremony, I realised a terrible truth.
Perhaps I had been the only one believing all along.
The mate‑bond twisted painfully inside me; a sharp, stabbing ache spread through my bones. Lira whimpered loudly in my mind, defeated and heart‑broken.
I stood alone amid the crowd, moonlight cold against my skin, watching my fated mate treat another as if she were his whole world.
A terrifying, desperate thought settled heavy in my chest:
What if the Moon Goddess’s greatest gift to me was never a love story?
What if it was nothing but lifelong heartbreak?
