Chapter one : Hatred
“Evelyn honey, can you hear me?” a voice cried out.
She couldn't recognize who it was; the voice sounded like one speaking in an empty room.
“My head hurts so bad,” she cried out. Placing her left palm on her forehead.
She opened her eyes, but her vision was blurred. The image standing next to her wasn't clear enough. She wiped her eyes with her fingers and attempted to open her eyes the second time; it was clearer this time.
“Thank goodness you are awake,” the voice came the second time. She could now recognize who the bearer was.
“Uncle Ben?” She called out to the fifty-seven-year-old bald man with a white mustache above his mouth who was standing beside her. She surveyed her surroundings, and immediately, her eyes were wide open when she suddenly recognized where she was.
“Wha-what a-am I doing here?” she stammered. Her eyes gazed at Mr. Ben and expected an immediate answer from him.
“You need to rest a little more, my dear,” Mr. Ben pleaded; he knew he owed her an explanation; he could see how curious she was, but he didn't think it was wise to reveal to her what happened.
“No, I shouldn't be here?” she shook her head in disapproval. She tried to get herself out of bed, but before she could get on her feet, she felt a sharp pain in her head, which pushed her backward. Uncle Ben rushed, and he assisted her back to her bed.
“You need to lay still; the doctor is on his way,” he pleaded.
Evelyn obeyed and laid back. She couldn't fix the puzzle in her head. The last thing she could remember was leaving the house for the hotel which was reserved for her by Screen Light, a popular movie company known for hosting auditions for aspiring movie actors.
She had been looking for this opportunity for over two years and now a door of opportunity had opened for her to audition.
Evelyn turned to her uncle, who stepped out of the room to get the doctor; it was taking too long for him to arrive at her ward. She watched him leave through the soundproof door, which made it hard for her to hear what was going on outside.
Her current situation kept replaying in her mind. Was something wrong with her? She knew if something was definitely wrong with her, Uncle Ben would not fail to disclose it to her. They were very close, and he was the only family she had after the death of her parents in a car accident fifteen years ago.
Three minutes later, the door opened, and Uncle Ben walked in along with the doctor, a tall white man with glasses which were placed closer to the tip of his nose; he had a red pen placed in the chest pocket of his white dress, and the doctor walked slowly behind Uncle Ben.
“Nice to have you back,” the doctor said. Throwing a warm smile at Evelyn, “Are you feeling any pain?”
“Yes, I am; my head hurts a lot,” she cried.
The doctor placed his palm on her forehead and turned to Mr Ben.
“I think she hit her head so hard while falling,” the doctor said. “She will be fine,” he said, before leaving the room.
Evelyn couldn't take it any longer; she insisted that her uncle reveal to her what was going on. She refused to be kept in the dark.
After a lot of pressure, Uncle Ben took a deep breath, sat beside her, and placed his right palm on her shoulder. He then revealed everything that happened, but she found it hard to believe.
“Are you saying I was knocked down by a car on my way to the audition?” She laughed. His words sounded much funnier than she expected. She stops when she reads the seriousness on Uncle Ben’s face.
Is he being serious right now? How could she be unconscious for two days?
“You need to get some rest,” he pleaded. He knew his niece so well that she wouldn't stop asking until she got every detail from him. But before he was done speaking, she was already in tears; Uncle Ben immediately wrapped his arms around her. He knew the effort she had put into preparing for the audition.
While he was trying to console her, the door opened. Evelyn thought the doctor might have returned to ask further questions or a nurse might have come to check up on her due to the noise coming from the room. But instead, her eyes fell on a young man in his late twenties. His suit was tight-fitted, displaying his muscular figure, and his black hair was well trimmed at the edges; Uncle Ben had already painted a calm smile on his face when he saw him.
“Evelyn meets Mr. Henry Phillips,” Uncle Ben said, pointing at Henry. “He was… the one who unintentionally…hit you,” Uncle Ben said. He was careful with the choice of words he used. ”It seems Mr Phillips came to check up on you.”
Before Henry could say a word, she stepped in; her tone was rough and unfriendly.
“Check on me?” Evelyn laughed ironically. She turned angrily at Henry. “I lost my audition because of you, and you still have the nerves to come in here.”
“Evelyn!!” Uncle Ben yelled. He tried to stop her from speaking harshly to Henry, surprised at how she addressed him; Henry was well respected in society, a young billionaire whose family’s name was popularly known. He was known for owning large properties and firms around the country, but he was popularly known for owning the ‘Starlight movie industry.’ To Uncle Ben, it was an honor to have someone like Henry before them.
“It wasn't my intention to hit you. Besides, you appeared out of nowhere; as I can remember, you were on a phone call while crossing the road.” Henry spoke in his defense.
“Really! "What a nice accusation,” she clapped her hands together, mocking his words, “Is that the lie you told everyone?”
Henry stared at her angrily. He didn't like how she spoke to him. He expected a simple reconciliation between them, but now she was getting on his nerves.
“I have told you what really happened,” he replied. He wasn't ready to let her see him as a weakling.
“Are you saying this was my fault?” Evelyn frowned.
She was so angry because he kept denying that the accident wasn't his fault. She could not remember how the accident happened, but she was so angry at him for hitting her; maybe if the accident had never occurred, she would have gotten lucky at the audition; every minute she thought of the audition made her feel hatred for him.
“That is enough of you two,” Uncle Ben intervenes. He was seated all along listening to both of them arguing.
“Am out of here,” Henry turned to leave the room. “I have more important matters to deal with,” he said, before leaving. Actually, she wasn't his problem.
“This isn't over, you hear me, you will pay for this,” Evelyn yelled from behind.
She watched him slam the door behind him. Henry paid no attention to her, nor did he reply to Mr Ben, who was pleading with him. He couldn't take her embarrassment any longer. He hated her for looking down on him.
Evelyn calmed herself down after Henry left; she noticed that Mr Ben's eyes were fixed on hers, so she decided to look away. He was indeed upset about how she treated Henry.
Evelyn judged from her uncle’s expression that Henry was not a man to be dealt with. She couldn't say what her next step might be. Was Henry going to fix what he did to her?
