Chapter 27Fort Keeps, NY — Adirondacks — October 1912 The bunk inside the cell was mounted into the wall, without legs, it hovered a few feet above the ground. He laid on his back, but there was no getting comfortable on an inch thin mattress. Caleb hadn't been sleeping anyway. The dark never bothered him as much as it did since he and his brother had been confined inside the jail. Some candle light was visible through the small glass window on the door leading into the sheriff's office. A window or two wouldn't have hurt. If the law was worried about people escaping, bar them. No reason why sun- and moonlight should be prohibited. They hadn't been convicted of any crime at this point. Innocent until proven guilty must not apply in the mountains. Caleb placed his forearm across his eyes.
