Chapter 30Jeremy was breathing hard, heavy. His breath plumed in front of his face. From his bedroom window he had seen Greta by the trees in the backyard. He'd immediately gone outside looking for her. Now, she'd led him deeper into the woods. None of the night made sense. Nothing. He couldn't understand why Greta didn't stay put, why she wouldn't just let him catch up to her. He was shivering. He hugged himself, rubbed his arms with arms crossed over his chest. Somehow, he'd lost track of Greta. He stopped moving. Just for a minute. He leaned his back against a tree. Above him, he thought he heard an owl. It hooted.
