Alexander
The carved eyes watched me.
I knew stone could not breathe.
Could not blink.
Could not judge.
Yet every instinct honed across years of war told me I was no longer alone.
Gold flames danced along the walls, casting long shadows over the chamber.
The whispering had stopped, but the silence it left behind was heavier than any battle I had fought.
I tightened my grip on my sword.
"If this is the work of a god," I said into the darkness, "then come and face me."
Nothing answered.
Only the deep groan of ancient stone.
A crack split across the chamber floor.
The vibration raced beneath my boots, climbing the walls like a living thing. Dust rained from the ceiling. The massive stone door before me shuddered, as though unseen hands were pushing against it from the other side.
Then—
It opened.
Not quickly.
Slowly.
Painfully.
As if it had remained sealed for centuries.
A blade of moonlight cut through the darkness.
Fresh air rushed into the tomb.
I closed my eyes for a heartbeat.
The scent struck me before the light did.
Sand.
Desert wind.
The faint sweetness of the Nile.
Egypt.
Real.
Not a fever dream.
Not the halls of Hades.
I stepped forward.
Every instinct warned me to stay where I was.
I ignored it.
Kings did not hide from destiny.
Outside, the desert stretched endlessly beneath a silver moon. The pyramids stood like silent giants against the night, their shadows swallowing the dunes.
I had seen them once before, years ago, when Egypt welcomed me as Pharaoh.
But this...
This Egypt felt different.
The stars were unfamiliar.
The silence was deeper.
The world itself seemed to have aged without me.
A movement caught my eye.
Far below the plateau.
Torches.
Dozens of them.
No...
Hundreds.
A procession wound across the desert like a river of fire.
Soldiers.
Priests.
Standards fluttered in the night breeze.
At their center rode a single figure cloaked in white and gold.
Too far away for me to see a face.
Yet every soldier around that rider kept a respectful distance.
Whoever it was...
They commanded absolute loyalty.
Without warning, pain exploded behind my eyes.
A vision.
A woman.
Dark eyes lined with kohl.
A crown of gold.
A serpent coiled upon her brow.
She stood before a throne, staring directly at me.
Not through me.
At me.
Then she spoke.
Three words.
"Leave my Egypt."
The vision shattered.
I staggered backwards, my breath ragged.
"What sorcery..."
Before I could recover, a deep horn echoed across the desert.
The procession had stopped.
One of the priests pointed toward the opened tomb.
Toward me.
For one suspended heartbeat, neither side moved.
Then voices erupted.
"There!"
"The chamber is open!"
"Seal it!"
Another voice, calm but commanding, cut through the chaos.
"No."
The single word carried across the desert with impossible clarity.
"Bring him to me."
I lifted my sword.
A slow smile spread across my face.
At last...
Someone worth meeting.
