Chapter 9With James away fighting, all of the joy that Phoebe might have known had turned into suffering; and she even felt as though there was something rather ridiculous, and perhaps even a little selfish, about continuing her studies. She longed to make some big sacrifice of the sort that James had made in going off to join the war effort, and she looked forward to getting her finals over and done with, so that she could offer her services as a VAD, along with her good friend, Jenny Bond. At least that way she would be useful. Phoebe's thoughts were taken up with matters such as these when she received the following letter from James: December 1914 Dear Phoebe, I miss you more than I can tell you, darling. The war is going well. Our boys are fighting bravely and I'm sure it's all go
