CHAPTER 1-WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?

1221 Words
The screams started just as I was walking off the path and towards the lake. I sharply turned to the screams but somehow I couldn’t move. Even as a howl sounded I couldn’t move. I was frozen. Then came the whimper. It sounded as if they were right behind me. The whimper came again, this time louder. I stood unmoving. My body is unwilling to listen to my commands. There was a whine and then, “RUN”.  I turned around then and my eyes widened and my mouth opened in a silent scream as I took in the sight of my mother, limping towards me, bloody and bruised. “RUN”. So I ran. **** I woke up with a start, panting and gasping for air. The dream was bright and imprinted in my mind, as if it had just happened yesterday.  But no, I lost my pack four years ago, when I was just thirteen. Yet every night since then, I’ve dreamt the same thing. Over and over again.  I was the last person alive in my pack. When the howls and whimpers finally quieted down, I went back only to find dead bodies and a horrible stifling silence. I ran and for the last four years, I’ve managed to stay hidden in a cave I found at the edge of the border. I was fine by myself and I couldn’t even imagine myself talking to anyone anymore. I was rogue without a pack and some days when I think about it too much, my vision goes a bit fuzzy and I start feeling wetness in my eyes.  I’ve cried so much since I lost my pack, that all I’m feeling now is just numbness. But today, I had things to do. Today was not a day to wallow and pity myself. So I rolled out of my makeshift bed and headed towards the stream that ran a little ways outside the cave. Oh wait. I forgot to introduce myself.  My name is Rin, short for Rinsley and I’m a werewolf. I was thirteen years old when I lost my pack, Mystic Peaks. The funny thing was my pack was nothing special. We weren’t big, tough, or scary. And yet we were still attacked. I was the son of the pack’s beta. I was average, at least that’s what I thought. I was now seventeen and had yet to find my mate. Not that I’ll find anyone out in the woods anyway.  Now I bent down by the stream and pushed away the thought of my mate. It wasn’t that I didn’t want one, it’s just that I’ve seen what happens when they reject you. Pain. Bright utter pain. And who would want a loner, weakling like me? I sipped a bit of the water. Refreshing, I thought.  Once I finished I looked around the forest. It had become my home and I was oh so familiar with it. I looked around wondering which direction I should go hunt in today. That’s correct, today was my hunting today.  I looked around the forest and started  walking in a direction I had never hunted in. This will do, I thought. Little did I know, I was heading into another pack’s territory.  **** I stopped walking after a while, listening closely for any animal sounds. There was a soft chitering in one direction I identified as a bird and another of soft pattering of feet. Just as I was heading in the direction of the soft pattering, I heard someone talking.  I froze and sharply turned to the sound. It was on the left and I could hear the voice growing louder.  Lucky me, I’ve come up with escape plans just in case something like this ever happens.  Most likely whoever was in this part of the forest, were werewolves. Werewolves have a strong sense of smell so the only way for them to not smell me was to either jump into water or use a specific type of spray to neutralize my scent.  Lucky me, I always had the spray on me. Wait. Oh shi- I ran my hands up and down my body but the spray was nowhere! I panicked and looked around the clearing for a river or even a small stream. But there was nothing. How could I be so careless?  I stopped panicking for a second to try and listen. The voices were drifting closer to where I was. I was currently hiding behind a tree and I bit my lip. There was a possibility I could outrun them, especially if they were only warriors or scouts. But I didn’t want to take that chance. So I glanced at the tree I was hiding behind and after examining its stability and durability, I decided to climb it. Even though it wouldn’t cover up my scent, the height could at least give me some leverage and distance away from them. If I was lucky, they wouldn’t even find me!  I bit my lip in anticipation as the voices grew louder and closer to the tree I was on. I shifted on the tree branch I was on and my eyes widened as I heard a crack. The branch was breaking! No no no no no no no. Just what else could possibly go wrong today?  Suddenly the voices were as clear as day, I looked down and realized the people were right below me! The one that I heard talking was a tall guy with strong muscular arms. I gulped and froze. There was no way in hell I would be able to outrun him. His legs were the size of my head! The other guy he was talking with looked similar to him. They were both extremely muscular and tall. This made me gulp; they were both so big and strong looking.  I held my breath and tried to hear what they were saying. “I don’t even understand why the alpha wants us out here. He could’ve gotten his sons to come out.” One of the guys grumbled. “Come on Cesar. Let’s just hurry up and get this over with.” the guy on the right said to Cesar.  They started walking off and I released the breath I was holding. Thank god- I froze as the branch I was sitting on let out another cracking sound. It wasn’t loud but the guys’ footsteps stopped.  They heard me! Shi-  “Did you hear that?” I held my breath and squeezed my eyes shut. Please oh please- “It was probably nothing. Let’s just hurry up.” The footsteps started up again and I heaved out the breath I was holding. Just as relief washed over me, panic kicked in again as I heard a loud crack from the branch I was on.  Nononononono. I’ve stayed hidden for so long, please, please. But the branch cracked and gravity pulled me down to Earth.  Please-
