Chapter One
Los Angeles, 11 PM. The night had fallen, and neon lights flickered against the dark sky. The distant hum of the city mixed with the occasional honk of passing cars, setting an urban backdrop for what was meant to be a celebration. Scarlett Brooks awoke in a haze from a heavy drunken stupor, her head pounding fiercely. As she blinked away the remnants of sleep, she realized she was in a luxurious hotel suite in downtown Los Angeles. The room was tastefully decorated with modern art and soft ambient lighting, hinting at a night of elegance and high society. Tonight was supposed to be a celebration for her stepsister, Tiffany Brooks, who had just won the California Jewelry Design Competition. Scarlett had only intended to have a couple of glasses of champagne out of politeness, but now she found herself battling a brutal hangover. Rubbing her temples, Scarlett sat up and listened. Through the thin walls, she caught the sound of hushed voices and soft laughter from the adjacent room. With a mix of curiosity and apprehension, she rose and padded quietly to the door. The neighboring suite’s door was slightly ajar, letting through a sliver of light and sound. Scarlett hesitated for just a moment before gently pushing it open. What she saw inside froze her in place. In the soft glow of a table lamp, a woman with wavy blonde hair—styled effortlessly—was intimately entwined with a man. That man was Alex Harrison, Scarlett’s fiancé. The intimate scene was punctuated by the woman’s soft, seductive inquiry: “Baby, how do I look?” Alex’s voice, low and husky, responded, “Perfect, sweetheart.” The intimacy in his tone cut deep as Scarlett recognized the voice behind the words—it belonged to Tiffany, her own stepsister. Tiffany let out a light, almost mocking laugh. “Since I’m so irresistible, shouldn’t you be giving me Scarlett’s latest design sketches?” she purred, her tone both playful and demanding. Alex smirked as he gently pinched Tiffany’s chin. “You little minx, always scheming for more,” he replied, though his tone held a note of reluctant indulgence. Tiffany’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “That’s because I love you, Alex! So, what do you say—shall we make our engagement official?” she pressed, her fingers trailing along his collarbone. Alex hesitated, a shadow crossing his features. “But I haven’t secured all of Scarlett’s designs yet. If she finds out about us, she might just stop sharing her work,” he murmured, his voice tinged with conflict. Tiffany scoffed softly. “Don’t worry. My father has already arranged for Scarlett to marry that spoiled Rockefeller heir. She won’t have much of a choice,” she said coolly. Alex’s brow furrowed. “And if she resists?” he asked quietly. “She doesn’t have a choice,” Tiffany replied, her tone hardening. “If she dares defy us, my father can ruin her career in no time. And if you’re worried about exposure, we can always have a secret wedding first.” With a resigned smile, Alex yielded. “Alright, you’re such a troublemaker—fine, I’ll do it.” In that moment, as the lovers embraced once more, Scarlett stood at the doorway, tears silently streaming down her face. For two years, she had believed that her relationship with Alex was built on genuine love and trust. Her innovative jewelry designs had earned her accolades, and she had poured her heart into every piece, trusting Alex’s gentle encouragement. Now, in the stark light of betrayal, she realized that her talent and passion had been nothing more than bargaining chips. The greatest hurt, however, was the knowledge that her own father had known all along, secretly manipulating her future by aligning her with a notorious playboy. Biting her lip to steady herself, Scarlett vowed quietly amid the fading echoes of the room: she would no longer be a pawn in their dangerous game.
