Chapter Fifteen

699 Words
Maxwell, his expression utterly impassive, said, “I don’t know about that—I’m not his tapeworm!” Scarlett frowned. “Then what did you mean just now?” Maxwell slightly furrowed his brow and replied, “It was just a reasonable guess. Do you really think Alex wouldn’t use his own methods against someone? Foolish.” Scarlett, unable to summon the nerve to hurl insults directly at him, spoke indignantly, “Even if he has a recording, I have the full recording of our conversation. If he dares to splice out the part where I admit to orchestrating this, I’ll release the entire recording to prove my innocence—then let’s see whose side everyone takes!” As she spoke, Scarlett pulled out her phone, the recording interface clearly visible. She had learned to be cautious these days, no matter what. Maxwell was surprised that even after the press conference had ended, Scarlett was still recording. With a hint of amusement, he remarked, “Looks like you’ve finally grown a brain!” Scarlett’s lips twitched with anger. “Maxwell, with your venomous tongue, you must not have many friends!” Maxwell’s eyes sparkled as he replied, “I do have few friends, but I only care about quality, not quantity!” He then shot Scarlett a pointed look that conveyed his disdain, and Scarlett felt the sting of his contempt. Turning her head toward the car window with irritation, she asked, “So, are you leaving or not?” Maxwell’s gaze darkened; he hadn’t expected her to still be angry. He recalled how Song used to get just as furious. Suddenly, he reached out and pinched Scarlett’s soft cheek, placing his large hand on the back of her head to gently turn it toward him. “What? Are you angry? Think I’m wrong?” The unexpected closeness and the grip on her neck made Scarlett stiffen. She retorted defiantly, “I’m not!” Maxwell scoffed dismissively, “Whether you are or not, your taste in people is terrible!” Scarlett shot back, “And what about you, Mr. Stone? I chose to marry you—are you saying you’re inferior, or that I must be blind to have picked you?” Maxwell’s eyes darkened dangerously. “Scarlett... are you provoking me?” Holding back a surge of anger, Scarlett shrugged, “If you think so, then so be it!” Maxwell narrowed his eyes dangerously and snorted, “Scarlett, sometimes having too much personality isn’t a good thing!” Scarlett retorted sharply, “You’re the one with all the personality!” “Get out of the car!” Maxwell commanded flatly, not wishing to say another word. He had gotten the odd idea that she was interesting enough to help her out. Scarlett, her face set in a tense scowl, opened the front passenger door and got out immediately. Barely managing to steady herself, she watched in disbelief as Maxwell floored the accelerator and sped off, leaving her to choke on a mouthful of exhaust fumes as she stomped her foot in anger. “What a petty man!” she fumed. From his rearview mirror, Maxwell caught sight of Scarlett’s stomping and felt his mood inexplicably lighten; he couldn’t help but curl his lips into a small smile. Scarlett then took out her phone, intending to call her best friend Lynn Xi, when her phone rang. “Scarlett, the press conference is over. Where are you?” Lynn Xi’s cool voice came through. Scarlett pursed her lips, “I’m downstairs at OceanSky Jewelers—what’s up?” In a low tone, Lynn Xi replied, “Come over now; I’m waiting for you at West Point Café.” When Scarlett arrived at West Point Café, Lynn Xi was already seated in her usual spot with a laptop in front of her. Scarlett leaned in and asked, “So, what’s the online situation right now?” Lynn Xi, known in the hacker community as LX and renowned for her computer skills, turned her laptop screen toward Scarlett and said evenly, “See for yourself.” Scarlett leaned in and immediately saw the latest statement posted on the Sterling Jewels website.
