Chapter 13Mason kept his mouth shut about the strange itch under his skin over the next couple of days. The absence of the broom Jack had worked on was enough to tell him what was causing it. Sometimes he’d get a glimpse of it when he passed the room his man had only let him into once, pride of place on the wide altar. It seemed to shimmer or ripple each time he looked at it like it sat at the bottom of a shallow pool of clear water. Half the time, Mason was convinced it was a trick of the light, and others, he was sure he saw the air distort around it. All the same, he kept his observation to himself.
