Prologue
“I’m not mad about the fact that you want to take those kinds of pictures of me, it’s the fact that you think I’m okay with you posting them on the internet!” Gena huffed into her headset on her cell phone as she completed the grocery shopping. “Ouch! Danm it all! No, I put my foot down wrong and my ankle gave out. No, Andy! I’m not okay with that. I don’t want to be viewed as a piece of meat. I don’t understand why you think I do. Look, the middle of Wal-Mart is not the time or place for me to be having this conversation with you, is there anything else we need food wise for the house?” Gena paused, holding onto the cart for support. “Okay. I’ll get in line then. We’ll talk about this later. Love you. Bye.” Gena used the cart to limp into the self-check-out line.
Dillian was walking through the deli department when he smelled the most amazing sent. His wolf was instantly on point.
“Mate!” He yelled. “Mate, Mate! Go find her you i***t! Move your ass before we lose her!” Dillian did exactly that. He’d picked up the chicken for the Pack party that was tonight, so he was ready to go. The scent lead him to the self-check machines near the grocery doors and to a woman who was limping while talking on the phone. From her tone of voice, it was a frustrating conversation that she was tired of having. That annoyed him. He walked up and offered to help.
“Hi! I’m Dillian. Can I help you check out?” He asked as he put his chicken down.
“Hi. Gena Matthius. Yes, please. Thank you. I’m not normally so clumsy with my feet. I’m not sure what happened there.” Gena said as she started pulling items out of her cart and handing them to Dillian.
“So was that your husband on the phone just now?” He asked, trying to feel out her romantic situation.
“Yes, and he’s a stubborn i***t! He just won’t listen to me about some things. It really causes problems between us sometimes. But he’s a great guy and treats me right on issues that really matter. He’s been through a lot, and he’s still trying to figure out this new normal. It’s frustrating for all of us right now.” Gena looked down at her hands for a moment. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have unloaded on you like that.” She said as she grabbed more groceries out.
“It’s no problem. I understand. Everyone needs an ear to talk to sometimes.” Dillian said, smiling at her as he grabbed the milk jug. Their hands brushed each other and the sparks exploded in both of them. Dillian’s wolf purred in pleasure at the sound of Gena’s breath catching.
“Oh my. I’m sorry. I didn’t realize that I’d had that much static built up. Talk about a shocking personality!” She giggled as she drew her hand away.
“No problem. I thought it was me giving you the shock.” Dillian chuckled back, looking into the cart. To his dismay, it was empty. “Looks like you’re ready to pay. Can I help you out to your vehicle?” He offered.
“Oh no. you’ve already done enough. Thank you again for your help. Besides, the walking will help my ankle stop hurting faster. I twist it like that a lot, so I’ll be fine by the time I get out there.” She smiled at him as she stepped around to pay while getting her card out. Dillian noticed it was a food stamp card and grew concerned for his mate. But he could tell that he had pried enough, so he let it slide without a comment, but he made sure to pay attention to how her name was spelled. He’d find her again and figure out a way to make things work out.
