The Weight of Duty
Amara POV The greenhouse was always Amara's escape. Like any other botanist in the world, Amara Holt loved the smell of fresh soil and the gentle hum of growing plants in the morning light. She was kneeling beside a row of rare orchids in the small conservatory behind the Eldenridge Public Library, which was only a few blocks away from her father's estate. It was a crisp autumn morning in early October, and it would have been a peaceful start to her day except her stepmother's voice kept echoing in her head from breakfast. She had reminded Amara about the engagement banquet happening tonight, for the third time this week. "Just a few more minutes," she whispered to herself as she carefully adjusted the soil around a delicate purple bloom. "Miss Holt, you know your father expects you home soon," came a voice from behind her. Amara looked up to see Marcus, one of her father's assistants, standing awkwardly by the greenhouse door. His usually neat brown hair was disheveled and there were dark circles under his eyes. "You look terrible, Marcus. Are you sleeping?" she asked, wiping dirt from her hands with a small towel. "Just busy with work stuff. Your father sent me to fetch you," Marcus shifted uncomfortably and avoided her gaze. Amara took note of Marcus's strange behavior. He was normally chatty and confident, but today he seemed nervous and jumpy. His hands were shaking slightly as he held her father's message. "What's so urgent? The banquet isn't until tonight," she said, standing up and brushing soil from her simple brown dress. "He wants to go over some details with you. About your duties as Julian's future wife," Marcus replied, his voice flat. Today was supposed to be the last normal day before her engagement became official. Tomorrow, the whole city of Eldenridge would know that Amara Holt was promised to Julian Warrick, heir to the shipping empire that controlled half the river trade. Leonard Holt had been planning this match since Amara was sixteen. Everyone in their social circle knew about it except Amara herself, until six months ago when her stepmother Celeste finally broke the news over afternoon tea. As the only child of Leonard Holt, Amara had grown up privileged but controlled. She was always surrounded by tutors and rules. Her father was the most calculating man she knew. He taught her that emotions were weaknesses in business, and he expected her to be sharp and obedient, the way a proper merchant's daughter should be. She attended the finest private schools and had the best education money could buy. She was never allowed to pursue her own interests, let alone choose her own future. Amara had always been dutiful to her father. That was the only way she knew how to survive. But everything felt different once she discovered botany. Her first act of quiet rebellion was convincing her father to let her study plants. He thought it was a harmless hobby for a young lady. She had been pursuing botanical research for the past two years now and she treasured every moment in the greenhouse. Her second and probably final act of rebellion would be finding a way out of marrying Julian Warrick. She had met him several times at social gatherings, and he was everything she despised. Arrogant, cold, and completely dismissive of her intelligence. "Do I really have to go right now?" Amara asked as she gathered her notebooks and sketching materials. "Your stepmother is already upset that you missed breakfast with the Warricks yesterday. She said something about not wanting to give them the wrong impression," Marcus explained as he held the greenhouse door open for her. When Celeste got upset, everyone in the household suffered. Amara sighed and said, "Fine, but I'm bringing my books. If father wants me home, he can deal with me reading." Amara stepped out of the simple carriage as Marcus helped her down onto the cobblestone driveway. A butler greeted her with a formal bow and he opened the heavy oak door for her. Amara paused for a moment in front of her family's grand mansion in the wealthy district of Eldenridge. She was thinking of her mother, who had died in this house when Amara was only fifteen. After her mother's death, Leonard had remarried Celeste within two years. Amara had moved to the smaller guest wing of the house, claiming she needed quiet space to study. Really, she just couldn't bear living in the same rooms where her mother had been happy. Stepping into the marble entrance hall, she was greeted by several servants and she was led to her father's study. "He's been waiting for you," one of the maids whispered. Whenever her father was 'waiting' for her, it usually meant he had instructions to give or he was about to lecture her about something. Amara was afraid it would be both. The servants opened the heavy doors to her father's study and Amara saw her father standing by the window and Celeste sitting in an ornate chair nearby. Her father looked stern and business-like as always. He was in his early fifties, but his gray hair and sharp features made him seem older and more intimidating. "Amara, finally. Come here, we need to talk," her father said without turning around. "Good morning to you too, father," Amara replied as she set her books down on a side table. Celeste looked up from her embroidery and smiled tightly. "Darling, we've been discussing your engagement party tonight. There are some important things you need to understand." Amara was confused. She thought tonight was just a formal dinner to announce the engagement. "What kind of things?" "Sit down," her father commanded as he finally turned to face her. Leonard Holt was an imposing man. He had built his merchant business from nothing and now controlled a significant portion of Eldenridge's trade relationships. Behind him stood his longtime business partner and friend, Roland Warrick, Julian's father. "Mr. Warrick, I didn't know you were here," Amara said politely, though her stomach twisted with dread. "Good morning, Amara. I hope you're as excited about tonight as we are," Roland replied with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. Amara forced herself to smile back. "Of course." "Excellent. Because tonight isn't just an engagement announcement," her father said as he moved to sit behind his massive desk. "Tonight, you and Julian will be officially signing the marriage contract." "Marriage contract?" Amara's voice came out higher than she intended. "It's a binding agreement between our families. The wedding will take place in six months, and you'll move into the Warrick estate immediately after," Celeste explained cheerfully, as if she was talking about planning a garden party. Amara felt the room start to spin. "Six months? But I thought we were just announcing the engagement tonight. I thought I'd have time to get to know Julian better, to prepare myself..." "Time is a luxury we don't have, my dear," Roland interrupted. "Julian is twenty-five and ready to take over more responsibilities in the business. He needs a proper wife by his side." "And you, young lady, are twenty-two. It's past time you were settled," her father added firmly. Amara looked around the room at the three adults who had apparently decided her entire future without consulting her. "What if I'm not ready? What if Julian and I don't suit each other?" The room went completely silent. Roland and Leonard exchanged a look that made Amara's blood run cold. Finally, her father spoke. "Amara, this marriage was arranged when you were sixteen years old. Roland and I have been planning this union for years. Our businesses, our families, our entire legacy depends on this match." "But what about what I want?" she asked quietly. "What you want is irrelevant," Celeste said sharply. "You're a Holt. You have responsibilities." Leonard stood up and walked around his desk to face his daughter directly. "This conversation is over. You will attend the banquet tonight, you will sign the contract, and you will marry Julian Warrick in six months. That is final." Amara stared at her father, hoping to see some hint of the man who used to read her bedtime stories when she was small. But all she saw was cold determination. "Do I have any choice in this at all?" she whispered. "No," all three adults said in unison. Amara felt something break inside her chest. She looked at her botanical books sitting forgotten on the side table, then back at the faces of the people who claimed to love her but were willing to trade her like a business asset. "I understand," she said finally, her voice barely audible. But as she left the study and climbed the stairs to her room to prepare for the banquet, Amara Holt was already planning her escape.
