**Nila's POV**
Hi! I am Nila. Today I am going to start my job in Amravati. I am going to work for one of the biggest billionaires in India. Actually, Amravati is my hometown, but after a protest, I moved to Tamil Nadu, where my aunt and uncle live. This place has changed so much in 14 years. I was 10 when my parents died in that protest. On that day, Amravati was burning; I can never forget that incident. That fire not only consumed Amravati but also took my parents away from me to a distance I can't cross, but they live on in my mind and memory. After that, my family members and other relatives never visited Andhra Pradesh. We moved to Tamil Nadu, where some of our other relatives lived. My aunt and uncle took care of me like their daughter. They say I am intelligent, hardworking, obedient, respectful, a good girl, naive, innocent, etc. I can be all of these, but not naive. That incident totally changed my life.
I entered the office building and went straight to the reception counter, where I asked the receptionist about the interview area. She showed me the way to the interview room. When I reached the interview room, a few people were already waiting there, so I had to wait for my turn in the waiting area. A girl was sitting next to me. She was very well-dressed and looked like a model. I doubted whether this was an interview or an audition. She asked me about my qualifications. After answering, I asked the same question to her. She introduced herself as Shweta and answered my question. She also said that she wanted to get an assistant job and exclaimed, "Being the assistant of one of the biggest billionaires in India is my dream."
"Tell me, Nila, don’t you have any specifications?" said Shweta.
"No, I don't have any specifications, but I only need a job to settle here," I replied. A girl exited the interview room, and Shweta told me that it was her turn. She said goodbye and entered the room. After some time, she came back and wished me good luck!
Then I entered the room. I was amazed by the interior design. This room was bigger than my entire apartment. It didn’t look like an interview room; it looked like something else. I imagined facepalming myself. I was here for an interview, not to ogle at the interior designs. Then I noticed a man sitting in a chair leaning back. I concluded that he was the interviewer, so I greeted him and took my position in front of him. He inquired about my previous job and the company details. I answered all his questions. After that, he asked me if I would spy on that company if needed. I responded directly:
"Actually, I can't do that because I had a very good relationship with the company workers and the management. If I spy on them, it’s not called spying; it’s called cheating. I can spy on anyone, but I can't cheat anyone. So, I can't. What will you say?" I asked.
"What if I say you will get this job only if you agree to spy on them?" he asked.
"Sorry, sir, I can't do that. I think you need someone better than me. I'm very bad at cheating, so my answer is still no," I said.
"Don't be shy, Miss Nila. No one will judge you if you say you are ready to cheat. For example, the previous girl I interviewed said yes to adjustments. You know, I didn't even ask her if she was ready for adjustments or not. She informed me that she was ready for any adjustments, so nothing is wrong with that," he said.
"Yes, sir, I can also make some adjustments like working extra hours and sacrificing my sleep, etc. But I can't compromise my morals. I believe my morals made me who I am today. Yes, sir, there's nothing wrong with adjustments. I too agree to adjustments, but not those you are mentioning," I said.
"Don't confuse spying with cheating, Nila," he said.
"Sorry, but if I spy on that company, they might have made a very big mistake, or the issue could be serious. In that situation, I won’t make any false promises to that company. However, to my previous company, I promised to coordinate with the workers, and I also promised the management to be a part of their success. I won't give those kinds of promises to that company; I'll only do the assigned jobs or tasks," I said.
"This answer still doesn't justify that your actions are not cheating. Still, they trust you, which is why they employed you as their employee, right?" he said.
"While it comes to being an employee, I'll do my job with utmost dedication, but I can't guarantee them any further promises. Cheating on cheaters is not a big deal. As I said in the previous question, I won't compromise my morals. I'll only spy on them if I think that spying is morally correct. A bad deed with good intentions is considered a good deed. In that sense, cheating on cheaters is not cheating," I said.
"Okay, Nila, the interview is done. You can go," he informed.
"Thank you, sir," I said and left the room.
After coming out, I called my friend Arjun.
"Hi Nila, how was it?" he asked me.
"I'm afraid whether I will get selected or not," I replied.
"Cool, baby, don't worry. I'm sure they will select you. Why are you worrying for no reason?" said Arjun.
"Actually, Ajju, the interviewer asked me if I would spy on my previous company. I told him I wouldn't do that. He insisted that this job would be allotted to me only if I agreed to spy on them," I said.
"Relax, everything is happening for a reason. Now that our job is becoming very easy, if they select you, we can assume they asked you that question to check your loyalty. If they don’t select you, we can easily conclude they are the wrong people. Then I can take care of the rest. Now I am agreeing with uncle's point," he said, but I interrupted him.
"Ew, why do these people think girls will adjust to get any high position in any field while having a degree from a good college with high rankings? It’s impossible," I said.
"Did he ask you to make adjustments?" he asked.
"No, he didn't ask me to make any adjustments, but the previous girl he interviewed told him she was ready to make adjustments. So he asked me, 'if she's ready for adjustments, why are you saying no to spying?' Like that, he asked me," I explained.
"First of all, why that girl..."
"I have just finished an interview. Please stop your questioning session. Now I want ice cream. Come, let’s go. Please, yaar. Come," I said.
Actually, sorry for not introducing him to you all. He is my childhood best friend. Even though I moved to Tamil Nadu, he comes with his mother to meet me during holidays and festival seasons. That's how we have maintained our friendship till now. He is literally family to me. His sister and I are very good friends. We are partners in crime, and he is our savior. We do all our mischief with his help. Since we both are studying in the same college, we get into a lot of trouble, and he is the one who saves us from our parents' wrath. Now I am living in his house.
Actually, they are a rich family—not billionaires, but we can say they are millionaires, and they are a joint family. He lives with his large family, and I love being a part of it. Not to mention, we are both relatives—not very close relatives, but we are still relatives.
After our conversation, we reached a summer ice cream shop and enjoyed my favorite ice cream. We also bought some for the people in our home. Finally, we reached our house, which is big and filled with family.
As we entered, his brother's kids showered me with hugs. Ashok uncle and Rajesh uncle are the heads of this household. Arjun and his sister, Chandana, are the successors of their father. His brother, Trishul, and elder sister, Shivanya, are his father's brother's successors. Shivanya’s husband, Vijay, is a police commissioner. They have been married for 20 years but don’t have any children. The age gap between Arjun and his sister Shivanya is more than 16 to 17 years, I think. He is like a child to them. Now he is preparing for the UPSC exam.
Trishul is married to Tripti, and they have three children. First, they were blessed with twins, Anita and Arun. Then, after two years, they welcomed little Naveen.
Rukmani aunt is Ashok uncle's wife, and Radha aunt is Rajesh uncle's wife. They are both sisters married to brothers. Radha aunt is just like a mother to me. She loves her four children very much. The same goes for Rukmani aunt. However, she hates me to the core, but I don’t know the reason. It doesn’t mean I don’t know the reason; I just don’t think it's a valid reason to hate someone. She considers me a bad omen. I found this out a few days after my arrival.
**ONE DAY (Flashback)**
On that day, Radha and Rukmani aunties were working in the kitchen. I was very thirsty, so I went there to quench my thirst. Until my arrival, Rukmani was clearly showing her hatred towards me. When I entered the kitchen, Radha Maa's face displayed her disdain. Rukmani Maa asked her why she hated me so much. She replied loudly to ensure I heard her words, telling Rukmani that when I was born, my mother took me to an astrologer to predict my future. According to his astrological report, the person who loves me and who will love me, and who I will love, will suffer from the Devil's anger. Is she for real? 'Devil' in 2024? 🥲😏
Hearing her reply hurt at first, but I later realized she was speaking naively. So I decided not to take her words seriously from then on. The rest of the members in the house also advised me to do the same. She also had another reason to hate me: her son. She thinks we are in a relationship, and that I will wrap him around my finger. 😂 It’s only going to be a matter of a few days, so I didn’t make an effort to persuade her.
**PRESENT**
After that, we distributed the ice cream to the children and the ladies in the house. I made some chit-chat with my dear friend Chandana and Rukmani aunty.
As sleep was far away from my eyes, I browsed the internet, and suddenly a notification popped up on my screen. When I clicked it, I found an email from that company stating that I was selected for the assistant post, "assistant to the CEO." I remembered that girl.
I felt suffocated being in my room, so I decided to go to the terrace with my laptop. There, I saw my friend sitting with his brother, chatting. I joined them, and after a few minutes, my friend left the conversation and went to sleep.
"Ajju, the interview results were positive," I said.
"Really? Okay, let's go with the plan," said Arjun.
"Okay, good night. I'm going to sleep. Sleep early," I replied.
He hummed positively in response. Later, my dream world accompanied me throughout the entire night, filled with some bitter incidents and some happy incidents, but when I woke up, I had forgotten them all.
Thank you for reading this book. Bye-bye! Tata!
