Chapter 6

Nia’s pov I stand in the shadows, heart pounding, watching as Kai lifts his coffee mug to his lips. He drinks. One sip. Two sips. Three. I feel an electric thrill course through me. Finally, For the first time in my life, I have power over him. Kai lowers the mug, frowning. He shifts in his seat, rubbing his chest. His face tightens. Then, the coughing starts. Violent, wracking coughs, as though his insides are tearing apart. Blood splatters onto the table. A strangled gasp escapes his lips. His body convulses, muscles locking. He grips his throat as if trying to claw something out from inside. I hold my breath, my pulse racing with excitement. He stumbles, knocking over the chair. The sound echoes in the quiet room. His body crashes to the ground, twitching violently. I stare. Did I… actually do it? Did I just kill the future Alpha? A twisted smile creeps across my lips. Kai's body stills. His lifeless eyes stare vacantly at the ceiling. A pool of blood spreads beneath him, soaking into the stone floor. I watch for a moment longer. Then, with a satisfied sigh, I turn and slip out of the room. I did it. Who is Nia? For years, I have been nothing but an afterthought. The daughter of Lady Vanya, a woman with high status but no power. A girl trapped between royalty and irrelevance—too noble to be discarded but too unimportant to be recognized. I was raised in these halls, but never once have I been seen. My mother, Lady Vanya, once had ambitions of ruling beside the Alpha. She dreamed of bearing his heir, ensuring our bloodline remained on the throne. But instead, the Alpha chose Lira. A slave. A nobody. And that nobody gave birth to Kai. The future Alpha. The boy who should have been my brother. Instead, he became my greatest obstacle. And my mother’s greatest shame. For years, I watched her scheme in the shadows, trying to elevate our status. But no matter what she did, the pack only bowed to one name. Kai. The violent, arrogant, brutal prince. While he roared through the palace, tormenting everyone, I was told to sit still and be quiet. To be a lady, to wait for my opportunity. But opportunities don’t just happen. You create them. And I just did. I step into my room, heart thrumming. The vision of Kai’s dead body lingers in my mind. I feel euphoric. Then a small voice whispers: It was just an imagination. It wasn’t real. Kai isn’t dead. Yet. I let out a slow breath, steadying myself. I still need to do it. And this time, I won’t hesitate. With calm, careful movements, I reach under my pillow and pull out the small glass vial. The poison inside is dark blue, shimmering under the candlelight. It’s odorless. Tasteless. And lethal. A single drop could weaken a wolf. Three drops? Enough to end an Alpha. I grip the vial tightly and make my way toward Kai’s chamber. His room is empty when I enter. A fire crackles in the hearth, casting dancing shadows against the walls. The air is thick with the scent of cedarwood and leather—his scent. I walk over to his desk. And there it is. His morning coffee, freshly brewed, steam curling in the air. A perfect trap. I don’t hesitate. I uncap the vial. One drop. Two. Three. The poison vanishes instantly. I watch the liquid swirl for a moment, ensuring there’s no sign of tampering. Then, without another word, I turn and slip out of the room. I don’t look back. Because this time, I know that when Kai drinks it, he will die. I walk through the palace doors, stepping into the cool night air. The sky is clear, the moon full, casting a silver glow over the stone pathways. My heart is still pounding, but I force myself to slow down. Rushing would be suspicious. Inside, Kai is dying. And here I am, heading to a celebration like nothing happened. A slow smile creeps onto my lips. By the time they find him, I will be long gone, drinking and laughing—completely innocent. I pick up my pace, excitement bubbling in my chest. Tonight, I will finally be free of him. SARIAH’S HOUSE The noble estates stand tall in the distance, their grand mansions illuminated with golden lights. I don’t even have to knock when I arrive—Sariah’s guards already know me, and the doors swing open the moment I step inside. Laughter, music, and the rich scent of roasted meat fill the air. The main hall is alive with movement—noble daughters draped in silks, their voices high and carefree. Silver goblets slosh with deep red wine, and the long table is piled high with fruits, bread, and spiced meats. Sariah is at the center of it all, lounging lazily on a cushioned seat, a goblet dangling between her fingers. When she sees me, her blue eyes sparkle with mischief. “Well, well. Look who finally arrived,” she calls, pushing herself up with a smirk. “I was beginning to think you’d gotten yourself into trouble.” I laugh lightly, slipping into the seat beside her. “Me? Trouble? Never.” She grins. “Then why do you look like a girl with a delicious secret?” I reach for a goblet and take a slow sip, savoring the taste of rich, spiced wine. “Because I do.” Her eyebrows lift, intrigued. “Do tell.” I shake my head, lips curving into a smirk. “Not yet.” I want to drag this out, savor every moment. The victory, the thrill, the absolute joy of knowing Kai is choking on his last breath while I sit here, laughing, drinking, and celebrating. Sariah sighs dramatically, flopping back into her cushions. “You’re impossible.” A burst of laughter erupts from the other side of the room, where a group of girls are tossing golden coins into a goblet, betting on who can land the most. One of them, a dark-haired girl named Vessa, catches sight of us and waves her goblet in the air. “Nia! Come join us!” she calls. Sariah nudges me. “Go on. Win a few rounds and maybe then you’ll be willing to share your little secret.” I smirk, finishing my wine in one last satisfying gulp before rising to my feet. “You’re on.” The room is alive, the air thick with the scent of perfume and wine, the sound of laughter and music filling every corner. Tonight is a night of victory. And I plan to enjoy every second of it.
