Chapter 5
Lira’s POV
The moment Kai steps out of the hall, I brace myself.
Because I know what’s coming.
And just like clockwork.. A shrill voice cuts through the tense silence.
"Are you proud of what you've raised, Lira?"
I sigh, rubbing my temples. Here we go.
Standing at the other end of the corridor, looking like three overdressed crows about to peck me to death, are the Alpha's three wives.
Lady Seraphine, the eldest, with her high cheekbones, regal robes, and the perpetual look of someone who just smelled something foul.
Lady Vanya, the second wife, cool and elegant, her expression as icy as her silver-lined gown.
Lady Ilara, the youngest, standing slightly behind them, eyes darting between us like a sheep following a goat.
They hate me.
Not just because I bore the Alpha’s only male heir.
But because Kai, whether they admit it or not has already surpassed all of their children.
"Well?" Seraphine presses, stepping forward, her golden bracelets jingling. "Your perfect son just declared war."
I shrug. "To be fair, Thorne kind of declared it first."
Vanya scoffs. "You should’ve controlled him."
I laugh. Actually laugh. "Controlled Kai? Have you met him?"
"You think this is funny?" Ilara hisses, stepping in. “Your son is a disaster. And it’s our pack that will suffer for it!”
I roll my eyes. "Oh please. Like you actually care about the pack. You just want your sons to have a shot at the throne."
Vanya’s face darkens. "And they should. The throne should never have been given to…"
"Careful, Vanya." I smirk. "Even you aren’t foolish enough to insult the next Alpha in public."
Seraphine crosses her arms. "You’re delusional if you think the Elders will stand by him forever."
I step closer, lowering my voice, so only they can hear.
"You all had your chance. Years to bear the Alpha an heir stronger than mine." I tilt my head. "But you couldn’t."
Their expressions tighten.
Because it’s the truth.
Kai isn’t just stronger.
He’s the strongest.
And they hate it.
I turn to leave, done with this conversation.
But I should’ve known better.
Because just as I pass Ilara…
Something sharp slices across my arm.
I freeze.
Pain flashes through me.
I look down.
Blood drips from a thin cut across my forearm.
I went silent at first before I smiled.
A slow, cooked smile.
Because if Ilara thought that was going to scare me?
She has no idea who she’s messing with.
I moved real fast.
Before Ilara can step back, I grab the front of her dress..
And yank her forward.
She yelps, stumbling, off-balance.
"Oops," I say sweetly. "Slippery floors."
Seraphine and Vanya gasp, but I don’t give them time to react.
I step behind Ilara, hook my foot around her ankle and trip her.
She crashes onto the floor.
Seraphine and Vanya lunge at me.
I duck, dodging Seraphine’s claws.
Vanya grabs a ceramic vase from a nearby table and throws it at my head.
I barely sidestep in time.
It smashes against the wall, shards flying everywhere.
"Are you crazy?" I laugh, dodging again. "I thought we were supposed to be dignified wives!"
"YOU ARE NOT A WIFE!" Seraphine screeches.
Ilara lunges up from the floor, but I kick out her legs and she falls again.
I wipe my bleeding arm on my dress, shaking my head. "This is getting embarrassing."
Seraphine snaps.
She grabs my hair.
I hiss, twisting, but she yanks hard.
And suddenly we’re rolling on the floor kicking and
slapping each other
Like a bunch of feral cats.
Vanya tries to jump in, but I elbow her in the stomach.
She stumbles back, wheezing.
I manage to flip Seraphine over, pinning her arms.
"Leave me."
"Never."
I press down harder.
"LEAVE ME, YOU MULE!"
Not a chance wifey, then suddenly a loud voice snapped at us.
"WHAT IN THE NAME OF THE MOON IS GOING ON?!"
We were so busted, we all freezed.
The Alpha stands in the corridor, eyes wide, flanked by warriors.
And beside him was Kai.
Leaning casually against the wall, arms crossed, smirking like a lunatic.
"This is the official meeting I was dragged out of bed for?" he says. "Is this an emergency?"
The Alpha’s nostrils flare.
We are so dead.
Ten minutes later, we’re lined up in the Alpha’s chambers.
Me, the wives and Kai who were still grinning.
"This is unacceptable," the Alpha growls, pacing. "You are supposed to be mothers of the pack! And here you are, behaving like… like…"
"Rival wolves in heat?" Kai supplies.
Alpha glares at him.
Kai shrugs. "What? Just saying what we’re all thinking."
Seraphine rubs her bruised wrist. "She attacked us!"
I scoff. "Oh please. You started it."
Ilara whimpers. "She tripped me!"
"By accident," I lie smoothly.
"This is the last time I will tolerate such behavior," he said. "Do you understand?"
Seraphine and Vanya mutter a reluctant "Yes, Alpha."
Ilara roll my eyes. "Yes, Alpha."
Kai coughs, definitely hiding a laugh.
The Alpha’s eyes snap to me. "And you."
Kai raises his hands. "Hey, I didn’t do anything this time!"
Alpha glares. "I should have let Thorne kill you."
Kai smirks. "But then you’d have no entertainment left, old man."
Seraphine gasps at the disrespect.
Kai and I burst out laughing.
Alpha drags a hand down his face.
"I give up," he mutters.
