CHAPTER 1 — PART 1 The Boy Who Arrived From the Shadows
The night before Raven Solstice arrived at AetherFall Academy, the sky tore open. Not in a way normal people would notice. The city lights still blinked, the trains still rumbled, the high school remained silent under the moon. But somewhere between the modern streets and the ancient ruins that merged strangely with this world, a ripple of black wind brushed across reality — cold, humming, alive. In that breath of darkness, a boy stepped through. Sixteen students whispered later that they saw a figure walking out of an alley where no alley existed before. Others said shadows moved on their own that night. A few claimed they saw glowing silver eyes for a moment, like a star trapped in a human face. They were all right. Raven Solstice walked forward with his hands in his pockets, black coat brushing behind him, his presence bending the streetlights just slightly. Shadows followed him like loyal dogs, slipping across the pavement to keep up with his steps. He hated it. “Not here,” he murmured, voice low and calm. “Stay back.” The shadows recoiled, melting into the walls. Raven breathed out quietly. Another world. Another school. Another place where he’d have to pretend he wasn’t a monster. He looked up at the massive campus gates ahead. Aetherfall Academy. The city’s most famous high school — and the most dangerous one. The place where reality and fantasy blended without rules. The place where he’d been told he could hide. For now. --- Morning — First Day Raven entered the courtyard, ignoring the stares. Students whispered immediately. “Who’s he?” “That hair— is it naturally black like that?” “Those eyes… they look scary.” “No, they look kind of cool.” “He’s definitely trouble.” Raven kept walking. He didn’t care. He only needed to keep his powers sealed, stay away from drama, avoid getting attached, and— He stopped. Someone was standing in front of him, blocking the path. A girl with long golden hair, shy eyes, and a soft aura glowing around her like sunlight breaking through clouds. Lyra Dawncrest. She blinked up at him nervously. “H-hi. You’re new, right?” Raven raised a brow. Most people were too scared to stand this close to him. “Yeah.” “I-I’m Lyra.” She fidgeted, clutching her books to her chest. “Um… you’re supposed to check in at the main office, but it’s confusing, so I could show you—” Before she finished, the wind shifted. Raven felt something. A presence. Cold. Hollow. Wrong. Like a breath crawling down the spine of the world. He turned his head slightly. A shadow behind the fountain… moved. Lyra continued talking, unaware. “So if you follow this path, you’ll see—” Raven held out a hand gently, placing two fingers on her wrist. She froze. Blushed. Stared at him. “Don’t move,” he whispered. Lyra blinked. “Wh-why?” His eyes changed. Silver lit up in his pupils — Astral Sight. And immediately he saw it: A creature hiding behind the fountain, shaped like a human but made of ink and void. A Hollow Spawn — servants of the Shadow Emperor. Here. Already. Raven clenched his jaw. His first day, and someone was already hunting him. The creature lunged silently toward Lyra. Raven moved faster. He pushed her back gently, stepped forward once, and shadows exploded from under his feet like black fire. Void Step. He vanished. Reappeared behind the Hollow Spawn. And pressed his hand to its throat. “Wrong target,” Raven whispered. Shadows surged up his arm, forming claws that pierced the creature’s body. It dissolved into dust instantly. Lyra gasped. “What… what was that?!” Raven turned to her slowly. “Nothing you need to worry about.” “But— your eyes— what—” “Forget it.” He brushed past her. “Let’s go to the office.” Lyra stood frozen, confused and trembling. But she followed him. --- Inside the Academy Aetherfall Academy wasn’t like a normal school. The halls stretched impossibly long, and magic lanterns floated above students’ heads. Ancient inscriptions glowed on the floor. Doors led to classrooms that sometimes changed location. And every few steps, Raven felt another presence watching him. Whispers spread faster than fire. “That’s the new guy?” “He looks dangerous…” “Did you feel the temperature drop when he walked past?” “I swear his shadow moved on its own.” Raven ignored them until— A body slammed into him from the side. “Yo! Watch it!” the boy shouted. Raven turned his head slightly. A tall boy with wild brown hair, bandages around his hands, and a ridiculous grin stared at him. Jax Rivenfall. Raven said nothing. Jax pointed at him. “You’re the transfer kid, yeah? The one everyone says came out of the shadows?” Raven sighed. “People talk too much.” “Good! That means you’re interesting.” Jax wrapped an arm around Raven’s shoulder like they’d been friends for ten years. “Come on, bro, I’ll show you around!” Raven stared. “I don’t even know you.” “Yeah, but I know you.” “How?” Jax grinned wider. “My instincts never lie. And they’re screaming: THIS GUY IS COOL.” Raven blinked slowly. This i***t was impossible to read. Lyra giggled behind them. “That… sounds like Jax.” Raven raised an eyebrow. “You know him?” “Everyone knows him,” Lyra sighed. “He caused an explosion in the cafeteria last week.” “It was a SMALL explosion!” Jax protested. Then he leaned in. “Anyway, rumor says you’re strong. Wanna fight after class?” “No,” Raven said. “Yes,” Jax corrected. “Awesome, it’s settled.” Raven sighed again. This school was already exhausting. --- The One Who Watches Raven finally reached the classroom. He stepped inside— —and immediately felt a piercing gaze. In the back corner sat a girl with silver hair tied in a long ribbon, her face half-hidden behind a book. Celeste Marivell. The Oracle. Her eyes lifted slowly from the page, and when she looked at Raven, the air chilled. For a moment… the world flickered. Raven saw something behind her eyes: A broken mirror. A shadow wearing his face. Blood on the moon. Celeste spoke, her voice soft but cold: “You shouldn’t have come here.” Raven narrowed his eyes. “I didn’t have a choice.” “You never do,” she whispered. “And soon… neither will we.” Lyra shivered. “Celeste, what are you talking about?” But Celeste looked only at Raven. “I saw your arrival,” she said. “And the thing that follows you. The Hollow King is waking.” Raven’s pulse stilled. She knew. Lyra stepped back, confused. “H-Hollow… what?” Jax tilted his head. “Why is everyone talking about kings and monsters? It’s first period.” Raven stared at Celeste. “You saw my memory.” “No,” she said quietly. “I saw your fate.” He didn’t like that. He didn’t like that at all. Before he could answer, the classroom door opened. He felt the danger before he saw her. A woman in a tight crimson dress stepped inside, heels echoing like heartbeat drums. Her hair flowed like blood silk, and her eyes glowed with a predator’s hunger. Serapha Veyne. The Crimson Witch. Their homeroom teacher. She smiled slowly when she saw Raven. “Well, well…” Her voice caressed the air. “The new transfer student. Raven Solstice.” Raven stiffened. Her presence was suffocating, heavy with curse magic. She walked toward him, each step deliberate. Shadows bent around her heels. “You’re even more beautiful than the rumors said,” she murmured, lifting his chin with one finger. Raven grabbed her wrist instantly. Her eyes sparkled in amusement. “Ah… you bite.” “Don’t touch me,” he said calmly. The entire class held its breath. Serapha leaned close to his ear, whispering so only he could hear: “I can smell the darkness inside you. And I will find out what you truly are.” Raven’s shadow flared behind him uncontrollably — a monstrous shape rising like a demon. Lyra gasped. Jax stepped back in awe. Celeste’s eyes widened in warning. Serapha smiled. “Welcome to my class… Shadow Prince.” Raven released her wrist, shadows retracting. He took a seat at the very back of the classroom. Right beside Celeste. She whispered without looking at him, “Your secret won’t stay hidden for long.” Raven leaned back in his chair, eyes half-closed. “I don’t need it to stay hidden.” He glanced toward the window, where a faint dark shape watched from the courtyard. “I only need to survive long enough to control it.” The morning wind blew colder than usual, carrying a strange silence over Aetherfall Academy. Raven felt it the moment he stepped into the courtyard — an unnatural stillness, like the world was holding its breath. It wasn’t just the cold. It was something watching. Something waiting. Raven ignored it and kept walking, hands in his pockets, coat brushing behind him like a trailing shadow. His footsteps made the only sound in the empty courtyard. Then— “Raven!” The voice cracked like a bell. Lyra ran toward him, golden hair bouncing in the light breeze, her uniform slightly crooked from rushing. Her cheeks were pink, breath uneven. “You didn’t wait for me,” she frowned softly. “I told you I’d walk with you this morning.” “I didn’t agree to that,” he said calmly. Lyra puffed her cheeks. “You didn’t disagree either.” Raven’s lips twitched — barely. Before he could respond, Jax slid out from behind a stone pillar like a chaotic gremlin. “BRO! You’re early! Usually mysterious guys like you appear dramatically when the bell rings.” Raven blinked. “I don’t do dramatic entrances.” Lyra giggled. “You literally teleported through a shadow yesterday.” Jax pointed at her. “EXACTLY. That was pretty dramatic.” Raven looked away. “That was necessary.” “Suure,” Jax teased. But the jokes faded when Celeste arrived quietly behind them. Her expression was tight. Tense. Concerned. Lyra noticed immediately. “Celeste? Are you okay?” Celeste didn’t answer at first. She looked at Raven, eyes reflecting shards of frost. “I checked the mirrors again.” Raven’s heartbeat stilled. “And?” “There was something new.” Lyra swallowed. “W-What did you see?” Celeste’s voice softened. “His shadow moved again… but this time, it moved toward him.” Raven’s jaw clenched. Jax frowned. “Uh… isn’t that normal? Shadows follow people.” Celeste shook her head. “This one wasn’t following. It was reaching.” Lyra stepped closer to Raven without thinking. “Reaching… for him?” Celeste nodded. “Like it wanted to grab him from behind.” Lyra’s face drained of color. Jax scratched his head, nervous. “Okay, nope. That’s nightmare fuel.” Raven looked away, eyes dimming. The Hollow King. Its awakening was accelerating. Celeste gently closed her book. “We need to check the Astral Observatory. If something is bleeding through the Veil, the mirrors there will show it.” Lyra grabbed Raven’s sleeve. “We’ll go with you. You’re not doing this alone.” Raven stared down at her hand. Warm. Steady. Small. “…Fine,” he murmured. The Astral Observatory The Observatory sat on the far side of the school — a tall glass tower with floating star-crystals swirling inside. Usually it was peaceful, glowing like a gentle dream. Today, it felt different. The sky around it was darker, as if the sun refused to shine near the building. The air felt thicker. Raven stepped onto the glass platform first. The moment his foot touched it— Crack. Lines of shadow pulsed beneath the glass. Lyra yelped and jumped back. “Why did it do that?!” Celeste whispered, “It reacted to him.” Jax whistled. “Bro, you’re like a walking security alarm.” Raven ignored them and walked inside. The interior of the Observatory glowed with floating mirrors suspended in midair. Some reflected the real world, others showed visions, timelines, or supernatural distortions. Celeste walked up to the third mirror on the left — the one that had reacted yesterday. Its surface was still cloudy, swirling like smoke trapped in water. “Watch,” she whispered. Everyone leaned in. The mirror slowly cleared— And the reflection appeared. Raven. Standing alone. Expression cold. Eyes glowing faint silver. Behind him… his shadow. Except— It didn’t look like a normal shadow. It was tall. Broader. Sharper. With horns curving upward like a king’s crown. Lyra covered her mouth with a trembling hand. “That’s not you… right?” Raven didn’t answer. Celeste continued, “Now watch what happens next.” The shadow reached toward Raven’s reflected neck. Slowly. Hungrily. Possessively. Lyra gasped, taking a step closer to Raven without realizing it, as if instinctively protecting him. Jax’s joking tone vanished. “Okay, nope. That thing needs therapy.” Raven stepped forward. The mirror flickered. His reflection turned— And the eyes weren’t silver anymore. They were black flames. The shadow in the reflection leaned close to Raven’s ear, whispering something— A word the mirror barely captured: “Soon…” Then the reflection shattered silently, the image dissolving back into smoke. Lyra grabbed Raven’s arm, voice cracking. “You… you didn’t tell us it was this bad.” Raven looked down at her trembling hands. He tried to pull away, but she held him tighter. “Raven… you’re scared, aren’t you?” He didn’t answer. But his silence said everything. Celeste closed her book again, expression grim. “We need to tell someone.” “No,” Raven said immediately, voice sharp. Lyra’s brows knitted. “Why not?” “Because they’ll try to seal me,” he said quietly. “Or worse.” Jax’s fists tightened. “Like hell we’ll let them.” Celeste murmured, “We won’t. But you need guidance.” Raven turned to her. “Who?” Celeste hesitated. Her eyes flicked toward the lower floors. To the forbidden wing where the teachers’ chambers were. Lyra gasped. “Celeste… no. Not her.” Celeste nodded slowly. “Yes. The Crimson Witch.” Raven’s expression darkened. “She is the only one who knows about the Hollow King’s curse,” Celeste said. “And she might know how to slow it.” Lyra trembled. “But she’s dangerous… what if she uses him?” “She already wants to,” Jax muttered. Celeste lowered her voice. “It doesn’t matter what she wants. If we don’t act soon, Raven will lose control.” The room fell silent. Raven stared at the smoke drifting inside the mirror, feeling the weight of the world pressing down on his chest. He hated this. He hated needing help. But Celeste was right. “Fine,” he murmured. “We talk to her.” Lyra’s hands tightened anxiously. Celeste nodded. “Then prepare yourself,” she whispered, “because Serapha Veyne is already waiting for you.” Raven blinked. “What—” A voice echoed through the Observatory. Smooth. Cold. Sweet like poison. “I’m glad you came, Raven.” The group spun around. Serapha stood in the doorway, crimson dress glowing in the dim light, eyes hungry and knowing. Her smile curled darkly. “Class is about to begin.
