THE BLIND SPOT
The smell of linseed oil and turpentine usually calmed me, but tonight, five stories up in the restricted archives of St. Jude Academy, it smelled like a trap. Rain lashed against the tall, Gothic windows, drowning out the faint echoes of the campus below. I adjusted the neck of my oversized sweater, my magnifying visor resting heavy on my brow as my scalpel gently scraped at the flaking varnish of a century-old oil portrait. As a scholarship student in the restoration department, I wasn't supposed to be here past eight. But the lead archivist had left me the keys to prep the founding family's gallery for the upcoming Founder's Gala. My scalpel hit something solid along the inner lip of the heavy mahogany frame. I paused, then tapped the wood with the handle of my brush. Hollow. Carefully, I slipped a thin spatula into the seam, prying away a concealed strip of backing board. Out fell a small, leather-bound notebook, its edges scorched and stiff with water damage. I pulled off my gloves and opened it. The handwriting was instantly recognizable. Clara. Clara Vance—no relation to the founding family, just another scholarship student who had supposedly drowned in the lake six months ago. The police had called it a tragic suicide. The school had swept it under the rug within forty-eight hours. I flipped through the pages. There were no journal entries, no teenage diary ramblings. Instead, Clara had sketched detailed blueprints of the academy’s security system, complete with camera blind spots, shift rotations, and hidden entries to the underground vaults. On the final page, written in jagged, frantic ink, was a short list of names: 1. Marcus Cole — "Heart Attack" (Oct 12) 2. Chloe Bennett — "Hit and Run" (Jan 04) 3. Clara Vance — "Drowning" (March 15) My heart hammered against my ribs. Below Clara’s crossed-out name, fresh charcoal had been pressed into the page, written in a different hand: 4. Isabella Reyes. A sharp click echoed through the silent room. I whipped my head toward the heavy oak doors of the archive. The iron deadbolt had slid into place. Before I could sprint across the room, the faint, sweet smell of chemical solvent drifted from under the door frame, followed immediately by the acrid sting of smoke. Gray plumes began curling through the bottom c***k and pouring from the ventilation duct above my head. "Hey!" I slammed my fists against the oak door. "Let me out! Fire!" No answer. Just the soft, rhythmic sound of heavy boots walking away down the carpeted hallway. Panic surged, cold and electric, but my survival instincts cut through it. I looked at the door—solid oak, locked from the outside. I looked at the smoke filling the ceiling. The service hatch. I grabbed Clara’s notebook, shoved it into the inner pocket of my heavy jacket, and lunged for my work cart. I grabbed a heavy bronze paperweight, sprinted to the small brass grate behind the main canvas rack, and smashed the lock with three brutal hits. The brass snapped. I pulled the metal door open, dragged myself into the narrow, dusty maintenance shaft, and kicked the grate shut behind me just as the archival glass windows shattered from the heat behind me. I crawled through the dark, suffocating steel tunnel, coughing into my sleeve, guided only by the faint light at the end of the chute. Reaching the exterior access hatch, I threw my weight against the latch and tumbled out into the pouring rain. I landed hard on my hands and knees in the muddy gravel of the inner courtyard, gasping for air, rain soaking through my sweater in seconds. "You're remarkably persistent, Reyes." The voice was calm, low, and cut through the sound of the downpour like a knife. I pushed myself up, wiping water and soot from my eyes. Standing a few feet away under a slick black umbrella was Julian Vance. Tailored dark coat, pristine leather shoes, his silver-gray eyes completely devoid of warmth. He looked down at me not with shock, but with a cold, calculating annoyance—as if I were a minor inconvenience on his schedule. Behind me, smoke began billowing from the fifth-story archive windows. I clutched my jacket tight against my chest, where Clara's notebook rested against my ribs. "You locked the door," I breathed, my voice trembling despite my best efforts. Julian didn't blink. He stepped closer, the edge of his umbrella casting a long shadow over my face. "I don't play with fire, Elena," Julian said softly, his tone flat. "It's sloppy." He glanced at my inner jacket pocket, his eyes lingering for a fraction of a second before meeting my gaze again. "You're standing in the wrong place at the wrong time. Put back whatever you took... or the next fire won't miss." He turned and walked away into the curtain of rain, leaving me shivering on the cold stones. I squeezed my eyes shut, my fist tightening over the notebook hidden beneath my coat. He didn't just know what I found. He was warning me.
