Chapter 12 — Someone Is Watching

387 Words
Chapter 12 — Someone Is Watching Travis began noticing things. A black car outside the hospital. The same man standing near the cafeteria. A camera that hadn't been there before. Every time he looked directly at someone, they disappeared. Then the message arrived. STOP ASKING QUESTIONS. It was written on a piece of paper beneath his windshield wiper. He immediately called hospital security. The security guard examined the car. “Nothing.” Travis looked toward the parking lot. The black car was gone. That afternoon, May called him. “You need to check your apartment.” “Why?” “Just do it.” “May—” “Please.” The line went dead. Travis returned home. His apartment looked untouched. Nothing had been stolen. Nothing had been moved. Then he saw the red notebook. It was sitting on his kitchen table. He had left it locked inside his office. He opened it. A new photograph had been added. Daniel. Inside Westbridge Hospital. Alive. Underneath it was a handwritten sentence: HE IS INSIDE. Travis immediately called the police. Before they arrived, his phone rang. Unknown number. He answered. “Hello?” A distorted voice spoke. “You should have listened.” “Who is this?” “You don't remember what happened to you.” “What happened?” “You were warned.” The call ended. A knock sounded at his apartment door. Travis froze. He approached carefully. “Who is it?” No answer. Another knock. Then a voice. “It's Daniel.” Travis opened the door. Nobody was there. Only a note. DON'T TRUST MAY. He stared at it. His phone rang again. This time, May. “Travis?” “Are you okay?” “No.” “What happened?” “Someone left a message.” “What did it say?” “Not to trust you.” Silence. Then May whispered: “Maybe you shouldn't.” Travis frowned. “What?” “I need you to understand something.” “What?” “I haven't told you everything.” The line went silent. Travis looked down. A shadow moved beneath his apartment door. Someone was standing outside. Then May's voice came through the phone one last time. “Travis…” “What?” “Daniel isn't missing.” The call ended.
