I'm Your Husband, Darling
"Damn it, the brakes aren't working!!!" Aira screamed in total panic, her knuckles turning bone-white as she gripped the steering wheel tight while heavy rain battered the car. "Please, stop!!!" Aira shrieked, terrified, watching the car in front of her get way too close while the slippery road sent her car sliding completely out of control. "The pedal is so stiff! Why won't it go down?!" Aira screamed hysterically, stomping on the brake pedal over and over with every single bit of strength left in her legs. "why is this so stiff!!!??!" Aira yelled hysterically as her hands tried to yank the wheel against the slick asphalt. "I CAN'T! THE CAR CAN'T TURN AROUND!!!" Aira screamed out loud, her tears falling fast just as a massive flash of lightning split the sky open. Blinding headlights from oncoming traffic hit her eyes in an instant. A deafening horn blasted through the roaring wind. The tires dragged, making a bone-chilling squeal before the lightweight car went airborne and slammed hard right into the road barrier. CRASH! The brutal impact hit her body without any mercy. Glass shattered everywhere, flying through the freezing night air. Her entire world spun wildly, flipped upside down, and then everything just went completely black. Aira had no idea when the sound of the rain actually stopped. All she knew was that her head felt like it had been smashed by a giant rock over and over again. Her body felt insanely heavy, like she was pinned down under a thick wooden plank. Then came this annoying beep... beep... beep... sound that just wouldn't stop poking at her ears. It was quiet, but constant, making her head throb even harder. Aira squeezed her eyes shut tighter, trying to hold down a sudden surge of nausea rising in her chest. There was a weird, sharp smell hitting her nose. Smelled like medicine, rubbing alcohol, and something ice-cold running right into the back of her hand. She tried to wiggle her fingers, but it was just so damn hard. It felt like every single joint in her body was completely locked up. She forced her eyes open, little by little. The ceiling above her was plain white. A long fluorescent light buzzed brightly above, making her eyes sting and water almost immediately. "Where... where am I?" she thought, totally lost. Aira blinked a few times, trying to get a clearer look at her surroundings. Next to her bed stood an IV pole with a clear bag dripping painfully slow, alongside a small table stacked with an extra blanket. This was a hospital room. She recognized what a hospital room looked like, but she had zero clue why she was stuck in one. Aira tried to dig through her brain. She tried to figure out what happened right before she woke up in this bed. But there was literally nothing. Her brain felt completely empty. No memory flashes, no street names, no personal recollections whatsoever. Taking a deep breath, she tried to call out her own name in her head. What is my name? Who the hell am I? The harder she tried to remember, the sharper her headache burned. A nasty, shooting pain spread all the way from her forehead straight down to the back of her neck. Panic started setting in. A super bizarre, overwhelming fear suddenly hit her chest hard. Why couldn't she remember her own damn name? Why didn't she know who she was? "Don't force yourself to move just yet," a deep, calm voice suddenly spoke up from the side of her bed. Aira flinched hard, instinctively turning her head toward the voice even though her neck felt super stiff and painful. Sitting right there on a cheap plastic chair beside her bed was a guy. He wore a crisp white shirt paired with a super neat black suit jacket. His dress pants were smooth, without a single wrinkle in sight. His hair was slicked back perfectly. He just stared at Aira with these quiet, steady eyes, showing not even a tiny hint of panic on his face. The guy shifted in his chair, leaning his body forward a bit before reaching out to grab Aira's hand. Aira tried to pull her hand back immediately out of sheer shock. But her body was way too weak, her fingers only sliding a few centimeters across the bedsheet. "W... who are you?!" Aira asked, her voice raspy and stumbling over the words. "Take it easy," the guy whispered softly, using his thumb to gently rub the back of her hand with incredible patience. Aira scanned the guy from the top of his head down to his chest. He had a strong jawline and a sharp nose, but she genuinely didn't recognize him at all. This guy felt like a total stranger. "Where... where am I right now?!" Aira whispered again, her throat feeling utterly bone-dry, just like a desolate desert. "You're in the hospital," the guy answered, the corner of his lips curving up into a slight, reassuring smile. "Why am I here?!" Aira tried to sit up, but a sharp wave of pain instantly shot right down her entire spine. "Hey, don't try to sit up yet, your body is still way too weak," the guy said, gently pressing his hands against her shoulders to settle her back onto the pillow. His push wasn't rough, but it was firm enough to make Aira lean back onto her soft pillow again. Aira's breathing started getting super messy. Her heart beat faster and faster, its rapid rhythm echoing loud and clear through the heart monitor next to the bed. "WHO AM I?! WHY CAN'T I REMEMBER ANYTHING AT ALL???!" Aira yelled, tears spilling over and streaming down her pale cheeks. The guy didn't flinch or look surprised by her sudden outburst. He just took a slow breath, grabbed a tissue from the side table, and wiped the tears off her cheeks with extreme care. "Just calm down," the guy murmured, gently brushing away the stray strands of hair hanging over her forehead. "HOW THE HELL CAN I CALM DOWN?! I DON'T EVEN KNOW MY OWN FREAKING NAME!!!" Aira screamed again, completely out of breath and panting heavily. Her chest heaved up and down wildly. Terrifying anxiety twisted her stomach into knots. She felt like she had been tossed headfirst into a massive black hole with absolutely nothing to hold onto. Everything around her felt totally wrong, alien, and scary as hell. "Your name is Aira," the guy replied in a super soft tone, almost like he was trying to comfort a little kid waking up from a long, nasty nightmare. Aira fell dead silent for a second. The name entered her ears, but her brain failed to make sense of it. "Aira...?" Aira repeated the name quietly to herself, trying to catch any familiar ring or strange feeling from the sound of it. But nope, it still felt totally alien. "Who is Aira?! Who am I actually?!" The guy stroked her fingers again, wrapping her trembling hand securely inside both of his palms. "You're Aira. You got into a really bad car crash last night during a heavy rainstorm," the guy explained, his gaze not dropping from her face for even a fraction of a second. Aira bunched her brows together. A car crash? Heavy rain? Sudden short flashes of memory popped into her head. The sound of tires screeching on wet asphalt, blindingly bright headlights, and a brutal slam to her chest. That was literally it. After that, total darkness again. "A crash...?" Aira muttered weakly, barely recalling the faint sound of squealing tires and bright flashes of light cutting through the pitch-black night. "Then... then who are you?! Why are you even here staying with me?!" The guy adjusted how he was sitting on the wooden chair beside her bed, leaning a little closer toward her. His eyes locked right into her watery gaze. "You seriously don't remember me?!" the guy asked, his voice sounding a little hurt, yet still shockingly calm. Aira shook her head slowly, her eyes completely blank. "I don't know your face. I have no idea who you are. Please just tell me, who the hell are you?!" The guy adjusted his posture on the chair, moving his face slightly closer to Aira. A super calm, extremely handsome smile broke across his face. "I'm Elian," he said slowly, sweeping his eyes across every inch of her face before finishing his sentence. "I'm your husband, darling." Aira's eyes snapped wide open in total shock, her heart skipping a huge beat the exact second those words hit her ears. "WHAT!?!?"
