Chapter 15

Sarah My mouth opened at the accusation. I had a feeling that the day was going to be difficult but not right from the get-go. My eyes pricked with tears, I hurriedly wiped my eyes and started back at the two women whose feelings were evident as their gaze was directly on my face. I swallowed the thickly, a knot forming in the base of-of my throat. “I am not after your son for money. I genuinely love your son and I would never do anything to harm him. I am not a gold digger or making a ploy of entrapment.” I say, forcefully. Her mouth formed a thin line and Shannon rolled her eyes. The midday lunch was uncomfortable, to say the least. It was an epitome of silence, David spoke a bit but otherwise, it was utter tension. His father whom I learned was named John, had not said one word. A few times I saw him looking at me but most of the time he ate his food. I had to be brave for Xavier, however, I wish I had been honest and told him I did not want to go. Finally, it was the dessert course of the meal, signaling it was almost done. I did not know how I would get through this whole weekend. They already seemed to hate, lust and stare at me in the course of a few hours. Xavier finally spoke up, I felt a small wave of anger. Why hasn’t he told his mother to stop or have them be at least cordial to me? “Mom, dad what is the meaning of this? Why have you called us all here.” He asks. “Yeah mom, what’s going on?” David whines. “Isn’t it suitable for parents to spend time with their children. Also, I wanted to meet the women who Xavier was spending his time with. “That’s cool and all mom, but why do I have to be worried about Xavier’s slut,” Shannon replies. When the words came out of her mouth, my resolve was at its lowest. I ripped my hand from Xavier’s and stood up. He made no move to defend me or say anything to reprimand his sister or his mother. I gave him one last look and walked off the patio. I finally allowed myself to break down when I was far away. The tears came fast and hard. I covered my mouth to silence myself, the housekeeper even Jorge looked at me in pity. I saw a door that was cracked open, slipping inside I saw it was a library. I inhaled the scent of coffee and old books, my love of reading taken precedent over the instances outside. It seemed to be no end to the number of books, I ran my hand across the shelves. I pulled a book down and nestled into the leather armchair. I embedded myself with a story of dragons and a valiant group of knight all pining for the affection of their travel companion. Quite a bit time passed before I heard the voices of people. I stood up, setting the book on the chair and tiptoe to the door. I press my ear against the door to hear the conversation on the other side. It sounded like it was David and Shannon. I strained to hear more of the conversation. “I don’t like her, she is obviously up to something sinister. Xavier usually cannot hold on to someone for enough time to even let photographers catch a glimpse of the female, and now he’s dating her and she is everywhere. What will this say about our family? That we invitingly take in barely legal girls.” She whisper-yelled. “Shan, why do you care so much about this girl? She seems nice and undeniably cute but I’m sure Xavier ran a background check on her. If she is one hundred percent genuine, then let him be happy. Frankly, I’m baffled, when you were younger, we had to scare off all of your boyfriends. Boy, have tables turned.” He reprimands. I step back from the door, twisting the stray strand of hair near my ear. At least, I had David in my corner somewhat but Shannon was the hardest to persuade. Currently, I could hear her, saying vulgar things about me. That I was a gold digger like her mother said. I did not wear designer clothing or change into something different. I still was the same. I still sometimes dressed in thigh highs and rompers. I still sometimes dressed in jeans and shirts. I may have changed residency but not who I was. I swiftly walked to the door and opened it, catching David and Shannon by surprise. Their mouths were open as if the words they had said before were too hard to speak out. I brushed past them and went to Xavier’s room. I opened the door and found Xavier laying flat on his back with Jessica kissing his lips. I let out a strangled cry which alerted them to my presence. Xavier abruptly sat up and pushed her away. He started walking to me, saying words that I did not bother to hear. I felt my face wet with tears, the smirk on Jessica’s face was that of pure evil. “Flower it’s not what you think. She came in and-“ She interjects “oh Xavier, you don’t have to let her down so easily. Tell her firmly, that we are getting married and you were just stringing her along. He turned his head to look at her then looked back at me. “Flower, I’m so sorry this…” He began to say. I did not let him finish and instead ran out of the room. My vision blurry but I could remember well enough the way to the front door. I swung it open and ran down the front steps and off the property. I slowed once I reached the end of the block. My breeding heavy, my nose clogged and my eyes still pouring with tears. My back was turned when I felt someone throw a large bag over my head and put a hand over my mouth. I started to kick and scream. My attempts to get free were futile. The person who grabbed me was very strong and I could not fight it off. I felt another set of hands grab my feet, tossing me into the back of what felt like a car. The hand was removed and replaced with a damp cloth. I felt myself getting tired, my fight to stay awake was failing. My eyes closed as even more darkness consumed.
