Unknown Abyss

Zara: Well, life isn't always what it seems. One minute you are single and the next you are making monumental decisions. One second you are 5 years old thinking about the world, the next you are graduating, driving, doing the college- life thing. Damn... it is funny how life works. While this runs through my head, I scroll through the stations on my old TV. Hmm... Am I feeling Judge Judy, Futurama, Dr. Phil or some mindless cooking show? Right as I was about to click on an option, enjoy it and treasure my couple of moments of freedom since being a sophomore in college is stressful, my roommate barges right on through the door in a hurry. I look at my roommate, Kellianne (Kelly for short), and notice that her dark hair was freshly done, her pale skin had been treated with some fine oils, her nails had been manicured, and she had a fresh face of makeup that complemented her dark brown eyes. But before I can complement her on her spa day she said overly bubbly for her, "Hey you! You missed out today. Since you decided on being a good student and went to class, but why you schedule them so early it escapes me, I went to go get mani-pedis, a massage and my hair done!" I attempt to say, "I can tell! Does that mean that..." but was cut off. Kelly interrupts, "Yes, I went with Xiomaura who does not schedule class early..." I cut in, "I get it. Get on with it!" Kelly continues, " Okay, okay. So while we were out sorely missing you..." she pauses at my eye roll, "we decided that we might as well stop in at Starbucks, I mean it is Boston after all. And I couldn't avoid him. (She was referring to her deadbeat ex that had cheated on her) All of the sudden Kyle turns up, with his new girl on his arm. He introduced me, had the nerve to tell me he would do me if, you know, she wasn't there, and then invited me to this party. Like WTF!!!" She exclaimed! I love Kelly dearly. I am very introverted, but fiercely loyal, bubbly and outgoing with those in my inner circle. We met the first day of college, I was terrified about my dorm mate, making friends and more. Then I walked into the room, and she was my saving grace. She jumped up off of her bed and said, "Hi roomie! Don't worry, I have got the Netflix and Hulu subscriptions, but you have to go get the snacks!" I could see the genuine spark, care, hope and authenticity that there was to her. The rest was history, me and her taking on college. Sophomore year has started, we were officially in October, summer relax period was over and it was work time. A couple weeks ago, at the campus coffee cart we ran into Xi, and just clicked. Now it was November 1, and I had gotten ahead on some work, attended class, and had no work today. Usually, on a day like this, we all have a treat yourself day, frugally of coarse, I mean we are in college. But I knew that her being distant, and persistent on me skipping class this morning meant something had happened with Kyle. I knew, from the past that splurging and waiting for her to come around was key. So I didn't pry, but by the way she came into the room I knew she was ready to talk. This whole, I caught Kyle cheating on me situation, is still very new. It happened right before school started. Right now I couldn't decipher which stage of grief, betrayal and disappointment she was in, so I did the only thing I could do. I said, " I am so sorry honey, sometimes some mean people keep bothering us, but like fireflies we are the light, and we stick to it. Darkness only finds darkness!" I say it with conviction and complete support for her. She was more the extroverted type, but we clicked like yin and yang with Xi as our gray. I had never had a boyfriend, had never been kissed, had never lost my V card, but am focused on my grades and getting my medical degree in neurosurgery. Meanwhile, Kelly kept a party school balance, trying to become a defense lawyer, dragging me a long occasionally; Xi on the other hand had one long term, live in boyfriend, and is aiming to get a double degree in business and in culinary. Therefore, Kelly is trapped with two loving ride or die friends, but are completely clueless in matters of the heart and wanting to exercise for more than 20 minutes every other day. Kelly looks at me and I can see the hurt in her eyes. I truly don't know what to do. I open my arms in the universal hug motion, and say, " This sounds like a DEFCON 1." Kelly sniffles and comes over to my bed and jumps in. Then I carry out our emergency action plan for feeling upset, splurging plus splurging equals binge watching and eating. I quickly turn on our favorite show, Gilmore Girls. After I text Xi 'we have a DEFCON 1', and call the usual pizza guy with a huge crush for Kelly. Seba always gives us extra and a great delivery, maybe one day Kelly will get over this jerk and give the guy a chance. I mean Seba is a phsycology major! No later that 20 minutes Xi arrives, bringing in the soda, and ten minutes after that the pizza arrives. We watch about five episodes in comfortable silence, but then Xi says, "Alright, your fed now spill what I missed because you have been moot since the run in with dumb and dumber on treat yourself day!" Leave it to Xi to have a gentle approach! Kelly quickly tells Xi the part she missed, and I take the opportunity to change the show. It is a great show, but I really wanted to catch the new Judge Judy episode. After successfully changing the viewing show and turning on the subtitles, I have listened to the girls talk, and half read Judge Judy. I heard Xi say, "Well are you going to go? That meanie broke your heart! And he knows it and gloats! Why not show him that your the man by showing up with someone else? Hmmm..." I heard Kelly answer, " Well I don't think I am ready to move on. I really thought he was it. You know?" Xi replied, "Well great, it sounds like we are having a girls night out and going to party so hard he gets jealous and begs you to come back!" Hearing this I paused the show and said, "Wait... what now?" Kelly beamed enthusiastically, "You're the best. This is is exactly what I need!" I quickly insert, "Well have fun and do not get murdered!" But before I can put my fingers in my ears and fake deafness, they both chide at me, "Nope. We need you with us! Besides, you are always at home. We live you just the way you are, but as your friend we have to make sure you get out some!" Then they looked at each other then back at me and pleaded, "Please," over and over until I finally relented. At the time, I had no idea what I had agreed to. I had said yes to fun, but inadvertently mystery too. It was the first time that I met Him.
