Chapter 1: Alpha's Rejection
The full moon had never felt so cold.
Wren Ashby stood alone at the edge of Ironclaw Pack's sacred clearing, her fingers gripping the sleeves of her faded gray dress until the fabric wrinkled beneath her trembling hands.
Tonight was the Moon Ceremony.
The night every unmated wolf dreamed about.
The night fate chose hearts.
For Wren, it was simply another night to be reminded that she didn't belong.
Laughter drifted across the clearing.
Bright dresses shimmered beneath the moonlight as young she-wolves whispered excitedly about finding their destined mates. Alphas stood proudly beside their families, Betas laughed among themselves, and even the other omegas smiled nervously.
Only Wren stood alone.
"Move."
A sharp shoulder slammed into hers.
She stumbled back just in time to avoid falling into the ceremonial fire pit.
Lyra Vance didn't even glance at her.
The Beta's daughter simply brushed imaginary dust from her crimson gown before continuing toward the front of the gathering.
One of the girls beside her laughed.
"Be careful, Lyra. If you touch her too long, people might think weakness is contagious."
More laughter followed.
Wren lowered her head.
She had learned years ago that silence hurt less than fighting back.
Besides...
No one defended an omega.
Especially not this omega.
"Begin."
The voice of Elder Garrick silenced the clearing.
Ancient chants filled the night as the elders circled the sacred Moonfire.
Silver flames rose toward the heavens.
Every wolf bowed.
Even Wren.
A familiar ache settled inside her chest.
Moon Goddess...
Please let tonight end quietly.
Heavy footsteps echoed across the stone path.
The crowd instantly parted.
Alpha Kade Thorne entered the clearing.
Tall.
Powerful.
Every movement carried the effortless authority of the strongest Alpha in the region.
He wore ceremonial black trimmed with silver, and his icy blue eyes swept across the gathered wolves without emotion.
Beside him walked Lyra.
Beautiful.
Confident.
Perfect.
The future Luna, everyone believed.
"They look good together."
"The treaty will finally happen."
"Ironclaw has never been stronger."
The whispers floated through the crowd.
Wren looked away.
She wasn't jealous.
How could she be?
The Alpha belonged to another world.
She barely belonged to this one.
The ceremony began.
One by one, wolves stepped before the Moonfire.
Golden threads appeared.
Cheers erupted as new mates found one another.
Tears.
Laughter.
Hugs.
Everything Wren had watched every year.
Nothing unexpected.
Until Elder Garrick called—
"Wren Ashby."
A few wolves snickered.
"Even the Moon has to remember she exists."
Wren ignored them.
She stepped toward the fire.
Warmth spread through the clearing.
She closed her eyes.
Nothing happened.
Of course.
Relief and disappointment tangled inside her.
Then—
Pain exploded beneath her ribs.
She gasped.
A brilliant golden thread erupted from the center of her chest.
Gasps swept through the crowd.
The glowing thread shot across the clearing...
Past dozens of wolves...
Past the elders...
Straight toward—
Alpha Kade.
The golden light wrapped around his wrist before returning to Wren's heart.
The bond blazed brighter than the moon itself.
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Someone dropped a goblet.
It shattered against the stone.
"No..."
Lyra whispered.
Elder Garrick staggered backward.
"The Alpha..."
"Mated..."
"To an omega?"
Every wolf stared.
Wren couldn't breathe.
Her mate.
The Alpha...
Was her mate.
For one impossible heartbeat...
Hope entered her heart.
Kade looked down at the glowing bond around his wrist.
His wolf roared inside him.
Mate.
He closed his eyes.
No.
Not now.
Not her.
Not when the Vance treaty held three neighboring packs together.
If he accepted this bond...
The alliance would collapse.
War would follow.
Hundreds could die.
He had promised his father Ironclaw would never know another war.
He slowly opened his eyes.
The hope shining on Wren's face struck him harder than any blade.
"I'm sorry," he whispered so quietly only he heard it.
Then he turned toward the entire pack.
His Alpha voice thundered across the clearing.
"Wren Ashby..."
"I reject you."
The words hit harder than death.
The golden thread snapped violently.
Wren screamed.
She collapsed onto the cold stone as unbearable pain ripped through her soul.
Every wolf looked away.
No one wanted to witness a rejected mate.
Her body shook uncontrollably.
Blood trickled from the corner of her mouth.
The thread continued breaking...
Breaking...
Then—
It stopped.
The Moonfire exploded.
Instead of burning brighter...
Every silver flame turned black.
A violent wind swept through the clearing.
The bonfire died instantly.
Darkness swallowed the sacred grounds.
The earth trembled beneath every wolf's feet.
A crack split the stone altar.
Elder Garrick fell to his knees.
"The Moonfire..."
"It has never..."
Before he finished—
Wren slowly rose.
Her head remained lowered.
Long black hair covered her face.
When she finally spoke...
It wasn't her voice.
It was deeper.
Ancient.
Cold enough to freeze blood.
"The bond refuses your command."
Every wolf froze.
Kade's heartbeat stopped.
The golden thread around his wrist...
Still glowed.
His rejection had failed.
The ancient voice laughed softly.
"You have rejected the last daughter of Nightblood."
The words echoed across the clearing.
Nightblood.
The name every pup grew up fearing.
Impossible.
They had all died two centuries ago.
Hadn't they?
Then...
A deafening wolf howl erupted beyond Ironclaw's northern border.
One howl.
Then ten.
Then dozens.
War horns exploded from the watchtowers.
"Enemy wolves!"
"They've crossed the border!"
"They're heading straight for the ceremony!"
An exhausted scout burst into the clearing, covered in blood.
He collapsed before Kade.
"My Alpha..."
His voice shook with terror.
"They're not attacking the village..."
"They're asking for someone."
Kade grabbed him by the shoulders.
"Who?"
The scout slowly pointed toward Wren.
His next words sent terror through every wolf in Ironclaw.
"They said..."
"'Return the Nightblood girl... or watch your pack burn before sunrise.'"
