Alice Dean, a young beautiful elegant looking woman of twenty five years old was driven into her father's compound, late Dean Gill. Her driver opened the door for her to step down from the car while he went to park it in the parking spot.
Alice was not looking very happy as she came down from the car. It appears that she was having a very bad day as early as ten in the morning when she drove in.
She walked into the mansion, trying to hide her anger as the maids in the house welcomed her. She went straight upstairs to her mother's room, Mrs Elizabeth Dean and knocked on the door.
Elizabeth was in her early fifties, she was happily lying in her bed, while one of the maids was tending to her toe nails, when she had the knock on her. She thought for a minute, trying to recall if she had sent for anyone but there was no memory of such. So she signaled the maid to check who was at the door.
As the maid opened the door and saw who it was, she bowed, "Good morning ma'am."
"Alice…," Elizabeth stressed as her daughter walked in wearing a rough face. Then she sat upright on the bed, "Have a seat." After Alice took the seat that was beside the bed, her mother continued, "What is it my dear? Why the sad look?"
Alice did not answer the question, she only looked at the miad who was still standing there with them in the room.
Elizabeth understood the look and scolded the maid, "What are you still doing here?! Will you leave immediately!!"
"Sorry Ma," she packed the items she was using to clean the nails of her mistress and ran out of the room.
Elizabeth then wore a cheerful look again as she faced her precious daughter, "Sorry about that. So tell me, what happened?"
It was now that the tears which Alice had been holding back began to gush out, rolling down her cheeks.
"Come on dear, you shouldn't be crying when you are with me." Elizabeth wipes the tears from her face, "Can I see you put a smile on your face?"
With the way her mother was pampering her at this moment, Alice had to force a smile as her mother had asked.
"That's my baby girl. You should never take this smile off your face no matter what."
Alice nodded, "Uh-huh," she then wiped her face by herself. She missed her father so much, he was the one she would run to whenever she had a challenge, and he was best at making her happy again. Ever since his death, her mother has been trying her best to fill in this gap, although she was doing well too, but she could not replace her husband.
"Now talk to me dear, what is it?"
"I just broke up with that fool called Noel."
"Another breakup??!!" Elizabeth could not help but exclaim. That was the third time in two years that she was having a break up after her husband died.
"Yes mom, Noel is no different from the others. I will even say he is worse than others."
"What did he do this time?"
"Can you imagine that he was asking about when he would get his share in dad's wealth?"
"And what did you tell him?"
"I told him the truth, of course?"
"What truth?"
"That you are the one to decide who partakes in the sharing."
"But you know that's not true? Everyone who is legally joined to this family will be part of the sharing?"
"Yes I know, but why is it that all the men I've ever loved are after sharing my father's property. That means they don't really love me. They are after our wealth."
"But you know nowadays people are all looking out for what they would get from a relationship."
"Was that why you married dad? Did you love him because of his wealth?"
"Alice…. You heard me say nowadays, right? Things have changed over the years."
"So you are saying true love does not exist anymore?"
"No, that is not what I am saying. Maybe you haven't found the right person. I'm sure there is some reasonable man out there that would love you not for your wealth, just as Conway loves you sister."
"To be sincere with you mom, I am tired of finding love. It seems like love is not meant for me. I give up."
"Oh dear, don't say that. You are the first child of this family and you deserve to find your own love. You need to be happy with a man."
"Like I said mom, I have given up on love. It is not for me. Sophie shouldn't wait for me anymore. She and Conway can proceed with their marriage plans."
"I don't think she can do that. She respects you and is ready to wait for you. We all respect you. I'm sure you will find true love someday."
Then there was another knock on the door and Elizabeth screamed again, "Who the hell is that?! I don't remember calling anyone."
"Madam, it's Martin, I was told you sent for me." He has been working there as a servant for barely two months. He happened to be the newest servant in the house. The truth was that they never needed his services in the mansion but because of the way he came seeking for the job, Alice had to persuade her mother to allow him work in the house. Besides, he was looking fit to do any work. Most of all, he was handsome even in the rags which he was wearing. So he was doing all kinds of jobs, mostly that of an errand boy.
Elizabeth then turned to her daughter, "You see why I told you that boy should not be permitted to work here? Did I send for anyone as we two were here?"
"Mom, maybe you did send for him before now."
"Okay, come in," she said and Martin walked in, looking as tattered as he'd always look.
"Good morning ma'am," he bowed to the both of them.
It was as Elizabeth saw the bucket and rags in his hands that she remembered what she had called him for. "Look at this fool, it's been over an hour since I called you here."
"I'm sorry ma for coming late. I was tending to the garden which you also asked me to do."
"Always have an excuse to make. Will you get out of here."
"Yes ma," he bowed and left them again.
"I wonder what you saw in that church rat that made you ask him to stay?" She complained to Alice, "Someone I sent for to come clean up some mess for over one hour, now is the time he is coming. So if not that someone else did it, this place would have still been in a mess."
"He said he's sorry, besides you were also the one that asked him to tend to the garden?" Alice took sides with him because she recalls her mother giving him that instruction before she left the house that morning.
"I know you would try defending him. Just know that he is still in this house because of the respect I have for you."
"Thank you mom. I will try to talk to him so this doesn't repeat itself again." She stands to leave the room.
"Alice," Elizabeth called as she was about to open the door, and she stopped, looking back at her mother, "Always remember to wear a smile, don't let Noel steal your joy."
"Yes mom. Thank you very much. You are the best." She then leaves the room.
