Chapter 1. A Marriage of Convenience.
“Phyliane, meet my eldest grandson, Calyx. Although he’s arrogant, he’s considerate and attentive. Trust me, I won’t let you marry a bad person.”
Taking his grandmother’s description of him, Calyx looked skeptically at Phyliane without saying a word.
Blushing, Phyliane smilingly extended her right hand to Calyx and introduced herself, “Hello Mr. Woods. I’m Phyliane Johnson.”
Calyx’s sharp eyes scrutinized Phyliane from head to toe. With Grandma Julie clearing her throat, he reached out his right hand for a shake, with an icy tone. “Calyx.”
After the handshake, Calyx raised his left hand to look at the time before informing Phyliane. “I’m a busy man, let’s get this over with. Let’s go inside for the paperwork.” Phyliane nodded in agreement.
Granny said, “Go on, get inside. I’ll wait here.”
“Granny, get into the car. It’s a hot day out.” Calyx said as he helped his Granny into the vehicle.
Throughout his actions, she may agree with Granny Julie’s statement that Calyx may be cold but his heart is in the right place.
Although they were strangers, Granny Julie mentioned that Phyliane could move out of her place into his place. A house Calyx bought before the marriage. It would reassure her sister that Phyliane was in good hands.
Phyliane heard his brother-in-law’s comment about her during the couple’s argument last night.
“Phyliane should be splitting the cost since she’s staying at our place, since we’re splitting our expenses, she should do the same.”
In her mind, she had to move out of her sister’s place. However, there is only one way to put her sister’s mind to rest: to get married to a suitable man. Stable and a good man. Her sister would never allow her to move out if she learned that she was just moving because of her brother-in-law's petty comment.
Since she wanted to marry without ever having a boyfriend, she decided to take up on Granny Julie’s offer. Whom she saved by chance. She came to know that the old lady was trying to marry her grandson. According to Granny Julie, she was worried that her grandson would never have luck finding a wife despite his age. Phyliane had assumed that he must be ugly.
Now that they had met face-to-face, Phyliane realized that maybe she had made the wrong decision. She was speechless after taking a closer look at Calyx’s face. He is good-looking with an air of aloofness. With a sour face, he appeared reserved and gave off meaning to someone to stay away from him.
