Chapter 1
Indiana As I sit across from Maja at the dining room table, the late afternoon sun cast a warm glow through the large open windows. Maja furrows her brow in concentration as she works through her math homework. Long division has been giving her trouble, but I'm determined to help her understand. "Okay, Maja, let's take it step by step," I say, tapping the textbook. "First, we divide the larger number by the divisor." I walk her through the process, illustrating with examples. Her eyes brighten as she begins to grasp the concept. With a proud grin, I exclaim, "You've got it!" and offer her a high-five, which she returns eagerly. Maja dives into the next problem with newfound confidence. As she works, I steal a glance out the window, taking in the peaceful scenery of the estate grounds. Arkadiusz, or Ace as we call him, enters the room and grins at Maja. He ruffles her bouncy blonde curls, making her giggle. "How's it going, little one?" he asks, leaning against the door frame. "Indy helped me with my math, and I got it right!" Maja announces proudly. Ace gives her an encouraging pat on the back before turning to me. "Good job, Indiana. You're a natural teacher," he says with a warm smile. "Thanks, Ace," I reply, feeling a surge of pride for Maja's progress. I return my focus to the math problems, lending support when needed. As Maja finishes her last problem, she flashes us a triumphant grin. "I did it!" she declares. Ace and I beam at her, applauding her accomplishment. With a chuckle, Ace tousles her hair again. "Nicely done, kiddo," he commends. I help Maja pack her backpack, taking note of the time. "It's almost time for your piano lesson with Mrs. Peterson. Ready to show her your new song?" Maja nods eagerly, her bright blue eyes sparkling with anticipation. Together, we head to the music room, Maja chatting animatedly about her day's adventures. In the hallway, we encounter Filip, one of Aleksander's trusted associates. He gives Maja a playful high-five as we pass. "Hey, princess, acing those equations?" he teases, causing Maja to giggle. After dropping Maja off at her piano lesson, I head to the kitchen and find Samuel, Maja's adoptive father and my mentor. He's there, preparing a quick snack before he and the others leave for a meeting with Aleksander. "Hey, Indiana," Samuel greets me, concern evident in his gaze. "Everything going well with Maja?" I nod, offering him a reassuring smile. "Everything's great, Sam. We had a breakthrough with math today. She's off to her piano lesson now." Samuel studies me for a moment before sighing. "You know you can always call for help if you need it, right? I worry about you being here all alone." I give him a hug, expressing my gratitude for his unwavering protectiveness. "I know, Sam. I'll be okay, I promise." As the men depart, I start prepping dinner, lost in thought. Chopping vegetables, I think about my past with Aleksander. We've grown closer, but I wonder if he'll ever see me as more than Maja's nanny. I shake my head, refocusing on the task at hand. Ace pops into the kitchen, rummaging through the fridge for a snack. "Hey, Indiana, got any of those cookies left?" he asks, a glint of mischief in his golden eyes. I chuckle and gesture toward the cookie jar on the counter. "Help yourself, Ace. You know where they are." As he munches on a cookie, we chat about Maja's progress and his day. I can't help but notice a glint of sadness in his eyes when he mentions a lost love. I make a mental note to check in with him later. When it's time to pick up Maja from her piano lesson, I find her beaming with pride as she plays her new song for Mrs. Peterson. The piano teacher praises her talent and progress, and Maja practically floats out of the room, clutching her music book. At dinner, Maja eagerly recounts her day's lessons, her eyes shining with excitement. Ace and I hang on her every word, beaming with pride at her enthusiasm. Filip joins us, teasing Ace about being too soft on "the little princess." After Maja goes to bed, I find myself alone, gazing out at the stars. I wonder what the future holds for all of us, hoping that I can be more than just a nanny in Aleksander's eyes. As night falls, I let out a soft hum, my thoughts drifting as I contemplate the world outside the estate. **** As the sun filtered through the curtains, casting a warm glow into the room, I gently nudged Maja awake. She blinked her eyes open and smiled sleepily at me, rubbing her eyes with tiny fists. "Good morning, sunshine," I greeted her with a soft voice, gently tousling her tousled blonde curls with my fingers. "Time to rise and shine. Today is going to be a great day." Maja yawned and stretched before sitting up, her blue eyes still heavy with sleep. I helped her get dressed for school, carefully choosing her favorite pink dress and putting her hair in a neat ponytail. As I brushed her hair, she mentioned being nervous about her math test. I stopped brushing and crouched down to her eye level. "You are so smart, Maja," I said, looking into her eyes. "You've been practicing so hard, and I know you're going to do amazing on that test. You've got this." She smiled up at me, her confidence growing, and I couldn't help but feel proud of her. With a shared, hearty breakfast behind us, we headed out the door, with me driving and playing her favorite songs to lift her spirits. When we arrived at school, I walked Maja to her classroom, holding her hand. The other kids greeted her eagerly, and I helped her find her seat before giving her a comforting hug. "Good luck, little star," I said, kissing her forehead. "You've got this." As the day unfolded, the morning turned out to be a success. Maja aced her math test, beaming with pride as she recounted the questions she breezed through. During recess, she chattered happily about her achievement, and I praised her hard work and intelligence. In the afternoon, after school, Maja and I stopped for ice cream to celebrate her triumph. She eagerly recounted her story of success over a double scoop of her favorite flavor, her worries and fears from the morning all but forgotten. Back home, Maja was buzzing with excitement for her dance class. I helped her pick out her favorite outfit, and she twirled and danced in front of me, showing off her moves. I couldn't help but capture the happy moments on my phone to send to Aleksander. As Maja headed to her class, I saw the pride on her face, and my heart swelled with joy for her. At dance class, Maja shone like a star, her feet moving gracefully and her face beaming with sheer happiness. I recorded her every move, knowing Aleksander would want to witness his little girl's talent. After dance, she proudly showed me new steps she had learned, and I encouraged her with praise and awe on my lips as we drove back home. While Maja showered, I started on dinner, the savory aroma of food wafting through the air. It wasn't long before the house was filled with laughter and chatter, joining Filip, Ace, and Aleksander at the table. Maja recounted her successful day, and the men listened with indulgent smiles, praising her proudly. Amidst shared stories and joyful chatter, a sense of contentment settled in, and Maja tucked in happily, satisfied after her busy day. Once Maja was tucked in bed, I joined the men downstairs, feeling a sense of peace and happiness. The day had been a whirlwind of proud moments, and as I sat amongst Maja's family, I felt the warmth of their affection and a belonging that was slowly creeping into my heart.
