Merrick’s POV
Watson, how the hell did this happen? How the hell was she able to leave her room without anyone noticing?
“Merrick, What the hell is going on?” I hear my sister’s agitated voice coming from behind me.
Ugh, another headache I don't need right now. I don't even acknowledge my sister. Instead of getting to hear Watson's poor excuse as to how she could escape, I keep giving orders to him.
She is only allowed to leave her room with a guard and make sure a guard is guarding her room at all times. If she is to leave, I need to be informed immediately! Is that understood?
"Yes, Alpha"
“Merrick, I know you heard me. What the hell is going on?"
Warriors are rushing all over the place in and outside. It looks like we are about to launch a full-scale attack on someone.
Nothing for you to worry about; it is being handled. I calmly reply to her.
“Really because from the looks of this place, it looks like everyone is in a panic.”
Charlotte, not now. I do not have time for this. I say dismissively as I head for my office. Before I can get there, she steps in front of my door, blocking my path. She is just standing there with her hands on her hips, and her face all scrunched up. As if this was supposed to scare me.
What the hell are you doing? I told you that I did not have time for this.
“Look, you can either tell me yourself, or I can start asking the guards and distract them from whatever it is that they are supposed to be doing. Which would you prefer?”
Fine! I growl.
One of the girls that were sold to us to forgive their family's debt tried to get away. But there is nothing to worry about now I took care of it. All the girls are now back in their chambers where they are supposed to be.
“What do you mean you took care of it?”
I went after the girl, and before she could get out of our pack territory, I caught her and brought her back. No one saw us or followed us.
“If you took care of it, Why did I hear not one but two howls from what sounded like an angry wolf? Is that why the warriors all running around like chickens with their heads cut off?”
Look, you wanted to know what was going on and I have told you everything! So, stop putting your nose in business that doesn’t concern you. Charlotte is standing there staring at me with her mouth partly open. I have never been so direct or rude with her before, but I do not have time to go into so many details right now. Plus, she is right; I hear the howls and know that somehow, someone either saw something or knows something that isn’t possible. But it could potentially be a threat that I’m going to have to deal with.
I start to sidestep around her when one of the warriors coming rushing in. “Alpha, I have the information you requested.”
Without paying attention or wanting to wait, I shove charlotte into my office as the warrior follows us closely.
What do you have for me?
He looks at Charlotte then back to me as if asking for permission to speak. It is fine you can speak in front of her. Thankfully Charlotte keeps quiet and doesn’t throw a fit about being treated like a lower-status wolf or something.
“Sir, the howls we heard earlier came from the place you had said to check first. In the neighboring pack next to the creek, it seems the girl was spotted by one of the Alpha’s sons when she tried to cross. We overheard him telling his father Alpha Lester that someone was trying to cross into their territory, but they were not able to catch them and that they ran back into our territory before they could catch them.”
I furrow my brows together as I hear the last part. . . . . . . . Hmm, interesting.
Is that all?
“Yes, sir. That is all that was said at the creek. However, it does look like they have tightened up on security as well.
Thank you for getting me this information so quickly. You are free to go.
Why would the Alpha’s son have lied about Molly crossing into their territory but going back into mine? I’m sitting quietly on the edge of my desk, deep in thought, when Charlotte’s eager voice breaks my concentration.
“So, what is so interesting?”
I roll my eyes in annoyance. I completely forgot that she was even in here; she was so quiet. Nothing, charlotte, I have work to do. So if you do not mind, can you leave?
“Yes, Merrick, I do mind. You are hiding something from me. Don’t even try to tell me that you aren’t because I can tell. Now spit it out!”
I groan in frustration but give in because it will be easier than having to argue with her or for her to try to discover what I’m hiding and somehow make this worse than it is. The girl that escaped earlier I was the one that found her, and she never crossed over into their pack territory, so it doesn’t make sense as to why one of the Alpha’s sons would have lied and said she did when she did not.
“Wait! What? You never take an interest in the girls who are brought here before being sent to the Alliance. Why would you go out searching for one of them?”
I do not even try to lie to Charlotte because she will find out soon enough. Instead of having the Alliance pick a wife for me, I have chosen to make the girl Molly mine. She was one of the girls who was traded to pay off her family’s debt that they owe to the Alliance.
“OMG, Shut up! Are you serious? What about the debt her family still owes to them. Won't they come looking for her if you do not send her to them when you send the rest of the girls?”
No, I've already taken care of that and will have the debt paid in full, and they will not be any the wiser.
"What the hell, Merrick! Have you lost your mind?"
