Prologue.
A/N: This book is not edited however it is completed. Keep in mind though that I wrote this book almost nine years ago when I was 13 so uhhhhhhh...give me a break if it's not as good as some of my other works.  Rachel. It was my eighteenth birthday and my best friend, Bridget and I were getting ready for the next best thing since my brother's eighteenth birthday party seven years prior.  "You know tonight you meet Mr Right" Bridget was saying as she dangled upside down on my queen size bed, reading some fashion magazine while I frantically rummaged through my closet, desperately looking for something to wear. I had Bridget come over to help me but to be honest she wasn't helping at all. "I know, so it has to be perfect and by perfect I mean having the most amazing outfit, which my best friend in the whole wide world helped me pick out" I said, watching her with my arms crossed over my chest as I leaned against the doorway to my walk in closet. My eyebrows were quirked up, almost daring her to make another excuse to back out of helping me. Instead she sighed over-dramatically and rolled over on my bed to get up, magazine left abandoned on my converter. "Okay, okay I get it no need to bite my head off, now let's get you all prettied up for Prince Charming" she replied with a smirk as she pranced into my closet, flicking through one rack then the next before she skimped across the shoe shelves and jewelry cabinets. I followed her inside, plopping down on my love seat as I watched her look through things. She pulled out a simple black cocktail dress. "Hmmm no" then threw it over her shoulder, moving onto the next. A leopard print dress "Hmmm pass" it wound up on the floor with the other one. Bridget reached for a red dress that looked promising "Oh how about-nope" then tossed it aside to advance to a rather nice looking cream colored one "Definitely not" it had the same fate as the others. "I've got it" she declared after having had a rather long conversation with herself when she found a silver sequin, figure hugging dress that was strapless and went down to mid-thigh. She handed it to me in a hurry. "Pair that with some stilettos and jewelry and BAM we've got a birthday girl ready to meet the man of her dreams" as she spoke she snatched some seven inch platform, stiletto heels and a simple set of chunky silver bracelets, a necklace and a pair of hoop earrings, stuffing them into my arms. She then forced me out of the closet and into the bathroom. "Now get dressed cause I have a little pink number with my name on it" she ordered, shutting the door before I could protest to scurried off back to my closet. I sighed, glancing at myself in the mirror. I started to strip out of my sweats and tank top. By the time I was done, Bridget was already fluffing her blonde curls in the full length mirror, turning this way and that to examine herself. She was dressed in one of my frumpy pink dresses that was a little too short and spread out at the waist. She had on a pair of leopard print heels and gold jewelry stood out against her tan skin. "Oh would you look at you, now isn't that what the Alpha's daughter should look like on her birthday?" Bridget complimented, coming over to take my hand and pulling me to stand in front of the mirror so that I could look at myself. The dress clung to my curves while the heels made my smooth legs look like they went on for miles. The jewelry made my olive skin stand out against its lighter shade. "Okay time for makeup" I didn't have time to respond since she quickly tugged me out of the closet and to my vanity. She was playing with my golden blonde mane while she waited for the curling iron to heat up, putting it in crazy plumps on the top of my head to see what exactly she was going to do with it. "Let's make those idiots wish they were Mr Right" with that being said, she started to attack my hair, pinning it half up and leaving the rest down in perfect curls. She went on to my makeup, giving me the mysterious smoky eye and coating my plum pink lips in a layer of bright red lipstick. By the time she was done I felt like a princess being pampered and I think it's safe to say that I looked like one too. "How do I look?" I asked her, fiddling with my bracelets as I stared at her reflection in the mirror. She looked up from her magazine with a seductive purr, scratching her 'claws' at me. "Sweetheart you're going to make those boys drool" I laughed when she shook her B cup size breasts for emphasis but was interrupted by my mother. She wore a knee length navy blue dress and navy heels as she stepped in through my bedroom doorway. "Honey the guests have arrived" I started panicking, knowing that I had to make my appearance as the birthday girl in front of everyone and I was nervous. "I'll be down in a sec" I said and my mother nodded, disappearing down the hall only to be replaced by Vicky who strode into my room with her black heels clicking against the wooden flooring. She was dressed in an aqua blue dress with her strawberry blonde hair pulled into a fancy up do. "You ready to amaze them, birthday girl?" Vicky asked with a slight grin. She along with Bridget were my two best friends and I couldn't have imagined facing the crowd without the two of them by my side. I gave her a hug and smiled. "Absolutely" I said in a positive tone while Bridget got up from her place seated on my desk, saying "Finally" then strode her way over to the door, pausing to look back at Vicky and me with a raised brow. "Well what are you waiting for? Let's drop some jaws" both Vicky and I giggled at her words and we followed her out into the hall where we locked arms, with me in the middle. Everyone was crammed into the foyer, living room and kitchen just waiting for me to appear and when I did, along with my two best friends, wolf whistles and cat calls filled the air. The girls and I laughed at that and made it down the last few steps with smiles plastered across our faces. "There's my birthday girl" my father said, wrapping me in a tight embrace as he rocked us from side to side and whispered into my hair. "You look so beautiful, baby girl" when I pulled back I was met with my brother, Dalton, who looked like he was trying to hold his pride by not acknowledging me but one look from his mate Nicole, who had my seven year old nephew, Aidan on her hip and he unwillingly opened his arms for me. "Happy birthday brat" I grinned, stepping into his arms and wrapping my own around his torso as I mumbled into his neat white shirt "Thanks big bro" When I pulled back, Dalton was looking away, scratching at the back of his neck while muttering a "Yeah whatever" then continued to grouch to himself about his pride. I rolled my eyes at him, moving on to my loving sister in law, Nicole. She was a brunette and was dressed in a red dress that fit her figure perfectly. We embraced and gave each other a friendly kiss on the cheek. "Happy eighteenth birthday little sis" she said as Aidan handed me a small grey box wrapped with a white bow. Opening it, I was met with the sight of a silver necklace that had the family crest dangling from it. A blood diamond was encrusted into the heart of it. "It's beautiful, thank you" I thanked her, giving Nicole another hug in which she whispered a quick "Don't mention it" then I gave one too little Aidan. He had Nicole's chestnut brown hair and Dalton's icy blue eyes. "Thanks squirt" I whispered before someone in the back yelled out over the crowd "Let's get this party started!" I knew the voice all too well and knew that it belonged to one of my best friends, Tristan, being his usual goofy self. As soon as the words left his mouth people were cheering and the music started up. Vicky grabbed my arm and lead me towards the kitchen. "Let's get ourselves some drinks" she announced with Bridget already jumping to the beat of the music when we entered the kitchen. Each of them filled a cup full of punch and handed one to me before shoving me in the direction of the dance floor. Sometime around me downing my drink and the room filling with tension, sweat and lust, I found myself dancing up against some jock from school that was getting way to close and personal for my liking. I was lost in the music when I was suddenly torn from the crowd by Tristan, who led me out onto the back porch. There were people in the yard, gathering around tables and just chatting. Some were making out and others were snacking on the party food. "So how's the birthday girl doing? Found him yet?" Tristan asked, giving me his signature heart melting smile that could make any girl fawn over him but the sad part was that his eighteenth birthday was months ago and he hadn't found his mate like he was hoping he would. "Never been better. No I haven't-." I cut myself off when I noticed someone leaning up against a tree near the tree line of the forest in our backyard. The guy was looking at me with forest green eyes. His chocolate colored brown hair was messy as if he just got out of bed. He was dressed in a pair of dark jeans, a black T-shirt with a red plaid shirt over it that had its sleeves pulled up to the elbow and was paired with some old red vans. "Found him...yet" I finished in an almost mesmerized state that had Tristan frowning at me in confusion. He looked like he was about to ask me what was wrong when a jock came rushing up to him. "Yo Tristan, dude some guy just passed out on the dance floor, you've got to come see this" he was about to protest but the jock didn't give him much of a choice. They left me standing on the back porch, alone. My eyes were locked onto the forest green ones of the unknown guy and without thinking I started making my way down the porch steps, towards him. I had abandoned my shoes by the steps and as I got closer to the guy I noticed that he was a few inches taller than me. Once we were toe to toe and he was no longer leaning up against the tree, I cupped his face in both my hands and crashed my lips into his. He stumbled back a bit in shock but wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me closer to him as he kissed me. Before I knew it, he was pushing me up against the tree he'd been occupying just a moment ago, pulling back to breathe heavily in my ear. "Mine" at that point I knew, I knew that he was my mate and that I was his. He met my lips with so much eagerness and knocked me back into the tree with so much dominance, forcing the air from my lungs with a loud gasp. I pressed myself up against him while he pinned my arms above my head with one hand and worked his other down to my rear. He gave it a hard squeeze and a gasp escaped my lips. He took advantage of that and forced his tongue into my mouth, tangling it with mine until I had to pull away to breathe, leaning my head back against the tree as he continued to trail kisses down my jaw and neck. "Y-Yours" I panted, completely out of breath. It was a sign that I accepted him as my mate and that I gave my permission for him to mark me as his. I could feel his canines grazing my skin while he made his way towards the junction between my neck and shoulder but before he could bite down, my mother's voice called out for me. "Rachel! It's time to cut the cake, dear!" I knew she couldn't see us since we were hidden behind the tree but I knew that if I stalled that she would come looking for me. Placing my hands on his slightly toned chest, I pushed him back just enough to stop him from marking me. "I-I have to go" I breathed, he panted with his arms supporting his weight on either side of my head. I was aware that my mother had gone back inside to look for me and that we were safe for a few minutes until she would start to panic. "I know" he said in a husky tone that sent shivers down the back of my spine. He wasn't big; he was slim but muscular with the veins on his arms standing out from strain. I huffed, nodding and pulled away from him, about to head inside when I turned back to ask. "What's your name?" he was leaning his forehead against the tree trunk with his eyes closed, trying to compose himself but opened them to reveal the coal black eyes of his wolf filled with lust and desire. They quickly faded back to green once he blinked and shook his head from side to side to try and clear it. "Hayden" he replied, turning to lean his back against the tree while clutching his head in his hands. "Rachel" I muttered, causing him to look back up at me. I gave a small smile and was about to turn away when he cupped my cheek and pulled me into a sweet, heart-warming kiss that made my pulse race. When he pulled away he leaned his forehead against mine, panting slightly as he whispered. "Before I forget, happy birthday" I smiled at him but before I could reply he was gone, leaving me standing by the tree alone and confused with a smile plastered clear across my face. I had met my mate and nothing could ever compare to that.
