I woke up to banging on our bedroom door with someone yelling for us to get up. Hayden groaned, rubbing at his eyes as I stretched and sat up straight causing the blankets to bunch around my waist as I turned to stare at the door. It flew open and Tate stormed in but he stopped to stare at me in nothing but my underwear.
"Uh sorry but Hugh ordered me to wake you, the Rogues are here" he mumbled scratching at the back of his neck as Holden wailed from all the commotion.
"What?" I asked jumping to my feet and searching for my clothes from the day before. I tugged on my shorts and gave Hayden a kick while I was at it.
"Common get up" I ushered causing Hayden to grunt before he sat up straight, running a hand through his messy hair. I grabbed his jeans by the bed and tossed them to him.
"Get dressed" I said snatching my own tank top to pull it over my head. Hayden muttered something under his breath and stood up to tug his jeans on. I playfully rolled my eyes at him and was about to pull on my shirt when I noticed Tate watching me. He cleared his throat when he saw me looking at him and turned his back to give me some privacy. I brushed it off, pulling my tank top on and scooping a still wailing Holden up into my arms, snatching his baby bag then looked at Hayden.
"Let's go" I ordered pushing past Tate, shooting him a glance as I went. Carla was wrapped in a grey satin gown, standing by the back window and peeking outside when we made it downstairs.
"What's going on?" Jordan asked coming down the hall in a short cream nightgown. At that moment Tyler stepped in through the back door, his eyes instantly landing on me.
"Finally, those mutts are getting risky out there" he said jabbing his thumb in the direction of the back porch. Jordan took a step towards him as Tate hurried forward and to the door, jerking his head for us to follow.
"Babe, what's going on?" Jordan repeated causing Tyler to reach his hands out to cup her face and force her to lock eyes with him "Don't worry about it okay? Just stay inside with Carla" he pecked her lips then turned to follow behind Tate, shooting me a glance.
"Take him?" I asked handing Holden to Carla who immediately took him and slung his baby bag over her shoulder. She tried to hush him by bouncing him lightly but it didn't seem to work so she settled for grabbing hold of my hand.
"Be careful dear" she warned giving my hand a loving squeeze. I nodded, pressing a kiss to the top of Holden's head.
"Always" I muttered then took off out the door and onto the back porch with Hayden following behind. The back yard was divided into two with the Rogues stationed near the tree line and the Titan pack in front of the house. There were only three Rogues in human form, the Lead Enforcer and his Second and Third in Command, the rest were all in wolf form stalking around like caged predators just waiting to strike. The Titans were all in human form with only Hugh, his sons, all the Tyrant pack members and a handful of his best Fighters.
"I won't ask you again Alpha, will you comply to our demands?" the Lead Enforcer asked nearly spatting the world 'Alpha' at Hugh who stood flanked by his sons. One black and dark brown coloured wolf looked at me from across the yard, it looked young and had bright red eyes, the eyes of the Rogues.
"No" Hugh replied holding his head high with the pride of a true born leader as everyone around him stood tall. The Rogue grinned widely.
"We'll just have to kill you then" he wickedly sneered but his smirk dropped when I pushed past Hugh and stepped ahead of him flanked by Dylan and Dwain.
"You can try" I said meeting his beady black eyes with my fists balled and feet set apart ready to attack if needed.
"Ah well isn't this a surprise, the long lost Lacus daughter, I wonder how much daddy would pay to know where his little girl's at" the Rogue taunted, his eyes roaming all over my body like it was a piece of meat on display. I glared at the stray with my eyes flashing from blue to black.
"You won't live long enough to find out" I snarled turning the Rogues sickly sweet façade into a deadly serious one.
"Is that a threat?" he asked stepping closer so that we were only a few feet apart, five at the most.
"It's a promise" I snapped causing the Rogue in charge to stay quiet for a minute as if he was thinking something over in his mind.
"Well then let's see if you're as true to your word as they say" he said shooting a look towards his Third in Command. The guy suddenly charged forward about to send his fist colliding with my face when I caught it and twisted it around so that he was stood with his back to me. I forced him to his knees as he struggled against my hold and with my free hand I reached up, snapping his neck in one swift motion. The Gamma Enforcer fell limp in front of me as I stared down at him. He was my first kill but not my last.
Stepping over his lifeless form, I closed my eyes, knowing they'd turn black and bowed my head with my hands clenched. When my eyes snapped open they met with those of the leading Rogue and a low, threatening growl ripped from my throat. Dwain and Dylan followed at my flanks, snarling with the volume of thunder crackling in the skies. When my growl died down I took a few deep breathes and in a matter of seconds the Rogues attacked.
"Kill them all" I said to Hugh then darted forward to go after the Lead Enforcer as he tried to make a run for it.
"No survivors!" Hugh cried out over the chaos as an all-black wolf lunged towards me. My eyes shifted and I was about to counter when the black and rust wolf from before tackled it to the ground. I met it's bloody red eyes and nodded my head in approval.
"Defend the house!" Hugh's voice rang as I took off at full speed into the woods. The rust and black wolf followed running beside me, dogging tree after tree until we reached an open clearing. The Lead Enforcer was sprinting across it when the wolf appeared in front of him cutting off his path.
"And where do you think you're going?" I asked taking a stand behind the leading Rogue. He whirled round to look at me with marked fear in his eyes.
"Figured I'd take my leave before things got messy" he said swallowing hard as I started circling around him with the wolf doing the same.
"You mean before I'd kill you?" I asked him while he looked between me and the wolf with the stuttered movements of a cornered animal.
"No, I was more concerned about our Alpha's son turning on me" he sarcastically snapped causing the wolf to growl and me to shoot it a glance. I stopped dead in my tracks to fully face the Rogue.
"Really? Well you should be concerned about me if you know what's good for you" I said lowly, eyes flickering from blue to black with my canines elongating and claws forming. The Rogue started laughing, throwing his head back to chuckle menacingly.
"You know Reign was right about you being a killer" I faltered in my step but quickly regained myself. The thought never touched my mind that Reign even knew who I was let along talking about me.
"I'm not a killer, I'm an Alpha" the Rogue grinned widely at me then stalked closer, setting the wolf on edge as he carefully inspected the Rogue.
"You're no Alpha darling, you're a Cross Breed, a Hybrid" he spat the words right in my face like I disgusted him but the way he laughed made it sound as if he was amused "A pathetic disgrace of an Alpha if you ask me" I refused to back down and instead glared directly at him with an emotionless expression. He turned to pace.
"I see no use for you but Reign, Reign wants you all to himself" my jaw tightened and my mind was screaming at him to stop talking but my body was frozen in place.
"And the best part is that you have no idea, do you?" he asked turning sideways to grin at me. He scoffed, turning back around.
"Of course I wouldn't expect you to-." he never got to finish his sentence as I lunged forward, digging my claws into his back and forcing my way through to his chest. He chocked, blood trickling from his lips as the sound of his cracking ribs reached my ears.
"Don't expect anything of me" I whispered into his ear, pulling my hand back so that he fell to his knees wheezing with his eyes wide. He knew he was going to die and as I turned, I wrapped my hand around his throat, squeezing it harshly with my claws sinking into his skin.
"You're a monster" he managed to spat between chocks, looking up at me but I was looking away, not wanting to see what I was doing.
"You're the monster" I retorted crushing his windpipe in my grasp then dropped him limp to the ground. My closed eyes opened as I started back towards the pack house. The wolf followed behind keeping a steady pace at my side.
The silence was enough to make me wonder, was I really a monster?
------------------------------
Later that day after all sixteen of the enemy wolves' bodies were set alight, we were all gathered in Hugh's office.
"What's with the mutt?" Dwain asked glancing at the guy no older than me with black shaggy hair and golden brown, no longer red, eyes standing protectively near me.
"The name's Jake" he replied to Dwain's question but the future Alpha looked disgusted.
"I thought you said no survivors" Tyler reminded jerking his head towards Jake. Tate was leaning up against the wall near the door when he spoke up "The kid was protecting Rachel, cut him some slack, will you?" Tyler shot Tate a look then muttered something under his breath, shaking his head as I turned back to Jake "I still say we kill him" I took a defensive stand in front of Jake while Hayden stepped forward, looking directly at Tyler as he said.
"He protected my mate and that's good enough for me to earn him a right to life" I met Hayden's eyes from across the room to see him covered in blood that wasn't his. He was still shaken up about having to kill for the first time much like I was.
"He has a point" Hugh agreed nodding as he glanced between Dwain and Tyler. I eased up a little and Dylan looked up from the ground, deep in thought.
"We just broke the law" he muttered, his eyes seeming almost dead with the colour in them paling. Jake glanced between us his eyes eventually landing onto me.
"What law?" he asked but before I could answer Tate interrupted me, crossing his muscular and bloody arms over his chest. The claw marks on them cut deep "The law of the Council that goes against killing" Jake's eyebrows furrowed up in confusion and this time I got to place my input.
"It's doesn't count with Rogues since they don't follow the Council" Jake glanced between me and Tate still confused.
"But the Raptors-." Hugh cut him off, punching his fist into his desk and causing the sound to echo throughout the room "Reign went against the Council by breaking the law like we did, now"
Everyone went quiet, jaws were set and eyes were lost in memory some filled with regret and remorse for what they did but all of us knew that it had to be done.
"It was necessary dear, if we're going to win this war then-." Carla trailed off from her seat on the couch by the fireplace with Holden in her lap. Hugh ran a shaky hand over his face.
"It just feels wrong" he breathed, squeezing his eyes shut. Carla didn't know what to say to comfort her husband but Tate did.
"When does war ever feel right?" he asked with an emotionless expression looking directly at Hugh. I decided to intervene.
"The law doesn't count when an opposing wolf is to threaten you or your territory then it states that if needed, the challenging wolf can then be extinguished but only if the Council grants permission" the Alpha took a minute, looking at me with a clenched jaw then nodded his head in agreement, we still broke the law but it wasn't as serious as it might have been if we were to kill innocent wolves. Hugh decided to change the topic.
"Caine called, the Lacus pack had arrived on his territory earlier today which means he'll be here around sunrise" I bit back my nerves about my old pack and stepped forward so that I was stood across from Hugh on the other side of his desk.
"Good, the sooner he arrives, the sooner we can get to winning this war" I replied sternly and Tyler scoffed catching everyone's attentions including Jordan's. She was on the other side of the room as far away from a bloody Tyler as possible.
"You're really confident about all this, aren't you?" he said meeting my eyes with a stone cold gaze. Both Tate and Hayden stiffened while Jake took a protective step towards me.
"That's because I know we're going to win" I confidently stated holding my head high with my bloody hand balled at my side while the other propped itself up on Hugh's desk.
"And how exactly do you know that?" Tyler asked stalking closer to me so that we were only inches apart with him towering over me. I didn't back down and instead met him head on.
"Because we have no other choice" I simply said causing Tyler's jaw to tighten and for him to lean forward in order to spat "No other choice? We always have a choice!" that's when Tate stepped up, grabbing hold of Tyler's arm and forcing him away from me with a snarl.
"She's your Luna, show some damn respect, pup" Tate threatened him being older than Tyler by a few years since he was in his mid-twenties and Tyler was around nineteen, twenty.
"Respect? What the Hell do you know about respect huh?" Tyler asked wrenching his arm away from Tate to shove at his chest, pointing towards Hayden who stood silent "I mean last time I checked weren't you the one to beat our Alpha's ass to a pulp?" Tate's jaw tightened at the temperamental future Enforcer, taking a deep breath before he spoke in a deep rasp.
"And I learned my lesson because of it so I suggest you stand down before I teach you one" Tate turned towards the door, glancing at Jake who nodded his head in silent agreement to something then Tate shot me a quick look before disappearing out the door. Tyler muttered something under his breath then turned to stare out the window behind Hugh's desk.
"You know Tyler, you're right" the words escaped my mouth before I could stop them, causing Tyler's back to tense.
"We always have a choice and here it's either kill or be killed" I paused staring straight at his back with my eyes flickering to black in the window's reflection.
"And let me ask you something. Are you ready to die? Cause I'm not" with that I turned away, about to leave out the door when Tyler spoke up "No" I stopped dead, glancing back over my shoulder at Tyler who had his body slumped over by the window, not looking at me but instead staring at the ground.
"No, I'm not ready to die yet" he repeated pressing his forehead against the cold glass of the window with his eyes closed.
"Then we fight-." I replied turning sideways to face him. His eyes snapped open when I spoke and he raised his head to meet my gaze.
"We win" I continued with my jaw clenched and my hands balling at my sides "No matter what"
Tyler stood up tall at my last words and nodded in agreement with his featured set in solid stone. He bowed his head towards me, showing his respect and submission.
"Yes...Luna" he breathed and without another word I left, heading for the forest where I knew Tate would be venting his anger.
------------------------------
I eventually found him in the clearing where we took Holden. He was pacing around, mumbling things to himself under his breath and running his hands repeatedly through his hair. I stopped at the edge of the tree line watching him as he closed his eyes and wrapped his hands together behind his head. When his eyes opened again they landed on me and it was like he froze.
"Rachel-." he trailed off, not shore what to say as I stepped closer to him in the tall grass. His face had dried blood on it and his arms looked torn apart.
"Tate" I breathed stopping in front of him to meet his eyes. He stared down at me, dropping his hands to his sides.
"I know, I shouldn't have threatened Tyler like that" he said lowly, about to turn away when I pressed a hand to his blood smeared chest. His jaw clenched as I stared down at the ground.
"You did it to defend me" I tried to argue thinking back to the anger in Tate's eyes when Tyler snapped at me.
"I shouldn't have done that" Tate whispered, his own eyes staring off into the distance when I looked back up at him "You're well capable of taking care of yourself" he added bowing his head to hide his face from me as if he was ashamed.
"You were just doing what any Beta would do" I disagreed shaking my head from side to side. I heard him scoff but before I could ask about it he was looking away again saying "I wish it was like that" I furrowed my eyebrows up in confusion leaning around to try and face him but he kept avoiding eye contact, pulling away from me.
"Look, I just need a minute to calm down okay?" he said turning his back on me. I didn't know what to do so I sighed deeply running a hand through my messy, tangled dirty blonde hair.
"Tate-." he cut me off before I could finish by glancing back at me from over his shoulder.
"Just go Rachel, please" meeting his eyes for a split second I could see the swirling rage inside them mixed with something I had no idea what it was.
"No" I stubbornly said, standing tall with my head held high in pride when I said it. Tate's back stiffened and I knew he was listening "I'm not leaving until you calm down"
I could easily hear his heavy breathing as he tried to hold his wolf at bay but it wasn't working since he almost pleaded "Rachel, go-just go" he tried but I refused to move, instead taking a few steps closer to him.
"I said no" I replied causing him to whirl round and snarl at me with his rust coloured eyes flickering to black. I met his snarl with one of my own, challenging him.
"Rachel" he warned but I didn't listen and instead got closer with my body ready to attack.
"No" I repeated seeing him close his eyes, trying to compose himself but I sent a fist colliding with his face that instantly caused him to snap. He lunged at me, swinging fist after fist, some struck target but others I dodged. When he stopped to breath I took the chance to send a kick to his side but his hand grabbed hold of my ankle and deflected it so I tried getting a punch in. His hand caught my fist and forced me to turn around so that my back was pressing against his chest with his warm breath breathing down my neck.
"Rachel, please I don't want to hurt you" he pleaded but I ignored him completely and elbowed him in the gut as best I could. He let go of me and I took the opportunity to send a roundhouse kick to the side of his face. He spat blood and rubbed at the blood trickling from his nose before he turned to snarl at me with pitch black eyes. He attacked landing a punch to the centre of my chest, knocking the air right out of my lungs and forcing me to stumble back. I managed to catch myself in time to dodge another swing of his fist and send a square kick to his chest. He staggered back then growled, lunging at me and pummelling me back into a tree causing blood to shoot out of my mouth. I expected him to hit me but he didn't instead he just stayed like that with his body pressing me up against the tree and his face hidden in the crook of my neck. Breathing hard, I slowly reached up to run a hand through his thick black hair.
"You calm yet?" I asked staring out onto the clearing as Tate breathed breath after breath down my neck, sending chills up the back of my spine. A deep, low growl was my only reply so I reached up to take his head in my hands and force him to look at me. His eyes were flickering from rust to black which meant he was fighting it.
"Calm down" I ordered and Tate closed his eyes, leaning his forehead against mine while supporting his weight with one hand against the tree beside my head and using the other to grip my waist. When he eventually opened his eyes again they were back to their normal rust colour and he looked more relaxed.
"You good?" I asked searching his features as he stared down at me still breathing hard but he'd managed to calm down.
"Y-Yeah" he breathed out nodding his head and leaning more into me before pulling away completely.
"Thanks" he thanked scratching at the back of his neck as he glanced down at the ground. I pushed off the tree, shrugging my shoulders.
"No problem, we better get back to the pack house before they send a search party or something" I suggested pushing past him, shooting him a glance as I did. He stared after me for a second.
"Right" he said nodding then trailed behind, making our way towards the pack house. I could feel the nerves rolling off him in waves as we walked but didn't say anything. It was then that I realised that Tate and Tyler had more in common than they thought; both had anger management issues like most male wolves did.
------------------------------
After a quick shower I dressed in a pair of grey sweatpants, a red sports bra and trainers, pulling my hair up into a high ponytail before I left for the backyard where Hayden was already training with Dwain. Tate was playing with Holden on one of the benches while Tyler was sat on the back porch talking to Dylan and Jake was off to the side sitting alone beneath one of the trees. I made my way over to him and leaned up against the tree next to his to keep an eye out for Hayden.
"Hey" Jake greeted folding his hands behind his head and leaning back with his eyes closed, trying to relax after everything that's happened.
"Hey" I muttered crossing my arms over my chest and tilting my head back to stare up at the sky through the cracks in the three top branches.
"So how did you manage to calm Tate down like that?" Jake suddenly asked peeling one eye open to peek up at me. I stiffened, glancing to where Tate was laughing with a babbling Holden in his lap.
"I don't know, I guess it's because he got to take all his anger out on me" I replied shrugging my shoulders, not really shore what happened back in the clearing myself. The look in Tate's eyes when I managed to calm him down flashed through my mind.
"What do you mean 'on you'?" Jake asked raising a sceptical brow and looking ready to murder Tate if I was hurt. I glanced at Hayden from across the yard.
"He attacked me" I said causing Jake to shoot up straight looking at me with wide eyes.
"He what?" he exclaimed shooting a glare in Tate's direction. I laughed shaking my head from side to side, catching Jake's attention "Not that I blame him, I mean I was the one picking for a fight" Jake looked confused with his golden brown puppy eyes staring up at me furrowed eyebrows.
"You picked a fight with him? Why?" I smiled lightly leaning back with my eyes closed for a minute just breathing in a breath of fresh air "Because he needed it" Jake's jaw dropped as he blinked up at me with a dumbstruck look crossing his features.
"What the Hell are you? Crazy?" he exclaimed loudly causing me to throw my head back laughing at his worried expression.
"Relax, I totally kicked his ass" I lied thinking back to how we were almost completely evenly matched. Jake shook his head, running a hand through his shaggy black hair, muttering under his breath "You're insane" I slid down the tree trunk until I was sitting beside him with my knees brought to my chest and a grin plastered across my face.
"Got that right" I said giving him a light jab in the side before leaning back, staring up at the cloudless blue sky. It was so different from the early morning cloudy grey scene. Jake scoffed, turning to look at the grass beside him instead of me.
"About what that Rogue said earlier-." I trailed off thinking back to what happened. Jake turned to look at me with his jaw clenched.
"What about it?" he asked glancing at Hayden and Dwain, still going at it in the middle of the back yard. I closed my eyes, drinking in the forest.
"What did he mean by me being a Hybrid?" I counter asked, stretching my legs out in front of me and feeling Jake shift so that his foot knocked into mine "I don't know; half human-half wolf?" I peeked across at him through one eye and shook my head in disagreement saying "I'm not weaker than most wolves, I'm usually stronger" the human DNA only slowed wolves down, made them weaker than average wolves. Jake nodded, staring off into the distance deep in thought.
"Well maybe you're a Hybrid between wolves? You know like a half Alpha-half Beta?" he suggested after a minute or two. I thought about it, thinking back to when the Rogue said something about me being a killer "yeah maybe" I shrugged sitting upright and glancing off to the side as I picking at the grass in front of my crossed legs.
"I don't know what you are Rachel, the only ones that know are Reign, my father, your parents and anyone else they trust" Jake suddenly said drawing my attention back to him. I searched his expression but found nothing hidden behind his suddenly serious façade.
"Your father doesn't trust you?" I asked and Jake shook his head, turning to glance down at his hands as he played with a stick he found "No, I was always the disgrace and my older brother was the perfect son" I nodded, understanding completely as I lightly bumped shoulders with him causing him to look up at me.
"Trust me when I say that I know exactly what that's like" he cracked a small smile at me and was about to say something when Holden's loud crying suddenly interrupted him.
"And that's baby talk for 'I'm hungry' guess I better go feed him huh?" I said getting up off the ground and dusting myself off before stretching out my sore muscles. Jake looked between me and Holden with furrowed brows.
"H-He's yours?" he stuttered in utter shock, staring up at me with wide eyes. I furrowed my eyebrows then realised that with everything going on no one told him anything.
"Yeah mine and Hayden's" I replied nodding and glancing across the back yard to where Hayden was clearly distracted with Holden's crying, worried about whether or not his son was alright.
"Oh uh I just sort of assumed he was that ladies, I didn't realise that-." he sheepishly trailed off most likely talking about Carla who was looking after Holden the entire morning until Tate insisted he take over babysitting.
"That I was a mom?" I suggested smirking in amusement as Jake snapped his jaw shut and averted his eyes nodding.
"Yeah, now I'm thinking about my mom" my own jaw dropped at his words and I suppressed the urge to hit him on the back of his head.
"I'm not that old!" I exclaimed glaring down at Jake who was nervously scratching at the back of his head not shore what to say.
"Rachel!" Tate called from his seat on the bench, trying to calm Holden down. Whirling round on Jake who flinched away, I stuck a finger out at him.
"This isn't over" I warned then took off jogging towards Tate with a sly grin plastered across my face. When I reached Tate I held out my hands to take Holden.
"Come to mama" he instantly handed Holden over to me and when he did I lifted him up into the air, blowing on his tummy through his green monkey shirt.
"Are you hungry pooh bear? Let's go feed you" Tate looked at me, shaking his head from side to side as Holden started babbling and laughing at me.
"What?" I asked Tate while making our way over to the house with Holden perched on my hip.
"Pooh bear? Seriously?" he questioned shooting me a raised eyebrow look and causing me to glare at him with narrowed eyes.
"Hey if you've got anything better then I'm all ears" I said stepping through the back sliding glass door that Tate held open for me. He chuckled then followed me inside, heading towards the kitchen where Carla had left Holden's baby bag.
"And if you say player or something then I'm seriously going to hurt you" I threatened as I dug for Holden's baby food. Tate chuckled, leaning on the kitchen doorframe with his arms crossed over his chest.
"I was thinking something more along the lines of soldier" he said shrugging his shoulders as he smiled lightly at the thought. The way he looked at Holden was the way a father looks at his son.
"Soldier huh?" I asked glancing over Holden as I scooped some baby food onto his spoon.
"I like it" I muttered, smiling at the idea. Tate smirked his signature cocky smirk from me obviously feeding his ego.
"Better than pooh bear" Tate taunted and I flipped him off before feeding Holden a spoon full of fruit flavoured six month baby food.
