The Secret Bride
Chapter Five: Secret in the Dark
The staff had retreated, sensing tension in the air. Amanda sat across from Damon, staring at her untouched food.
Finally, she blurred out the question she had been holding back all day.
"Why did someone threaten you... over me?,
Damon's gray eyes narrowed. " Because you're part of my life now. And enemies never miss a chance to exploit weakness."
Her heart skipped a beat. "But... Why didn't you tell me?,"
He leaned back in his chair, folding his hands over his chest." Because this is my world. You're supposed to be an observer, not a participant. Your safety depends on that."
His expression softened briefly, thought the usual mask of control returned almost instantly. "You're part of the contract, Amanda. Not my life... not yet."
The words cut deeper than she expected. Not yet.
She swallowed, forcing herself to nod, thought her chest ached.
Later, she walked along the balcony, the city lights twinkling below like a thousand tiny stars. She couldn't stop thinking about Damon- his cold exterior, his flashes of concern, the danger he faced daily.
A sudden movement behind her made her jump. Damon was there. closer than she expected.
" Thinking too much?" he asked, his voice low.
Amanda shook her head, unable to meet his gaze. "I...I'm worried. About you."
For a moment, the barrier between them seemed to weaken. Damon's gray eyes softened, a vulnerability she had rarely seen.
"Amanda..." His voice was almost a whisper.
" You have no idea what you're getting into."
Her heart thudded painfully. "I think I do.. I think I'm falling for you.,"
His breath caught. The air between them crackled with tension, unspoken desire, and fear.
" Don't, " he warned stepping back. " This contract... this marriage... it's all you'll ever have from me."
But even as he said it, his hand lingered near hers, a dangerous closeness that spoke volumes more than his words ever could.
And in that moment, Amanda realized the truth: she was in too deep.
Too deep to escape.
The following morning, Amanda awoke to silence, a calm that felt almost unnatural after yesterday's storm. She stretched, her mind still tangled with Damon's words from the balcony. Not yet. Don't fall for me.
And yet, her heart refused to listen.
She dressed quickly, slipping into a simple blouse and skirt attempting to erase the tension that clung to her like a shadow.
Today, she had been tasked with accompanying Damon to a meeting with one of his business partners-rare opportunity for her to witness his world up close.
As they drove through the city streets in the sleek black limousine, Damon remained unusually quiet. Amanda stole glances at him, notiing the way his jaw tensed whenever the conversation turned to business. His hands gripped the steering wheel like a vice, each movement precise, controlled.
"You've been quite, " she ventured cautiously.
" I've been thinking, " he replied tersely, not meeting her eyes.
Amanda hesitated. "About... me?"
His gaze flicked to her briefly, gray eyes sharp and unreadable. "No. About
everything else. About the people who want to see me fail."
She swallowed hard. The danger he constantly referenced wasn't an exaggeration. She had glimpsed it yesterday- the black-suited men, the threats, the letter. And now, as they approached the towering glass building of one his business offices, she realized she was no longer just a bystander.
inside the building, the office smelled faintly of polished wood and expensive cologne. Damon's business partner, a man named Richard, rose from behind a sleek desk, his eyes widening slightly when he saw Amanda.
" Mr. Steele, and...?"
"My wife, Amanda," Damon said dimply.
Richard's gaze lingered a fraction too long
" Ah...yes. Of course. welcome."
Amanda offered a polite smile, but her unease grew. Damon's sharp eyes naver left her, almost as if he were guarding from some unseen threat.
The meeting began smoothly, business discussion flowing seamlessly.
But halfway through, a familiar voice cut through the room- smooth, condescending, and dangerous.
"Well, well... Damon Steele. And who do we have here?"
Amanda froze.
A man stepped into the office, his tailored suit flawless, hair slicked back.
His smile was charming, but his eyes were cold. Victor.
Damon stiffened, jaw tightening. "What do you want, Hayes?"
Victor's gaze slid to Amanda, lingering for too long. "I wanted to congratulate your... new arrangement. A lovely addition to your empire."
Amanda felt a chill . His presence alone radiated threat, yet there was something more- something personal.
" Stay out of this," Damon said, his tone ice- cold.
Victor smirked ."I wouldn't dream of hurting her...if I can't have her."
Amanda's stomach knotted. She had already notified the tension yesterday,
but hearing it now, in the middle of Damon's business world, made her realize how real the danger was.
Damon's hands clenched into fists, but he remained composed, forcing his voice to remain calm. "You will leave. Now."
Victor laughed lightly. " Oh, Damon. I don't leave things unfinished."
Before Amanda could react, he dropped a folder on the desk and left, leaving her with a sense of impending doom.
That night, back at Steele Manor, Damon shut every door and locked every window. The mansion felt smaller somehow, more claustrophobic.
"Why is he doing this?" Amanda asked quietly, sitting on the edge of the bed.
Damon's gray eyes softened eyes so slightly as he approached. " He's dangerous. And he wants to test you... to see how you react under pressure.
You have to trust me."
"I do trust you," she whispered.
He paused, standing close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from him. " Good. Because you'll need that trust."
Amanda's heart reach. She wanted to reach for him, to close the gap between them, but the fear of his warnings-the contact, the dangers, the world he lived in- held her back.
Damon lifted her chin gently, his gray eyes piercing into hers. "Remember... everything I do is to protect you. No one hurts what's mine."
Her pulse jumped. She knew he was speaking not just about the threats from men like Victor, but about himself- about his own heart, locked away and untouchable.
And in that moment, she realized she wanted to break through that wall, no
matter the cost.
The next morning brought a shocking discovery. A package had been left no the mansion's doorstep: a single envelope, black and unmarked.
Inside was a photograph- Amanda's face, candid, taken without her knowledge. Someone had been watching her.
Her blood ran cold. Damon's expression darkened the instant he saw it.
" They've found you," he said quietly, his hand brushing hers- not in warmth, but in warning.
Amanda's chest tightened. The reality hit her hard: She was no longer just a contract bride. She was a target.
Damon's hand lingered near hers for a heartbeat too long, sending a shiver through her. His voice softened ever so slightly. " I'll protect you... no matter what it takes."
The words should have reassured her. But instead, they left her trembling.
Because she knew, deep down, that the danger wasn't just from outsiders.
The real challenge was navigating the forbidden attraction growing between them...
And that, she feared, could be even deadlier.
Amanda woke to a quiet house, thought the sir felt heavy, almost suffocating. She couldn't shake the feeling of being watched- the photograph, the black envelope, Victor's threats- it all weighed on her like a storm cloud ready to break.
She dressed quickly, choosing a simple outfit. She didn't want to draw attention to herself today, but she had learned quickly in Damon's world that sometimes, even simplicity was noticed.
everyone was silent at breakfast.
Damon didn't speak any word.
