The Secret Bride
Chapter One: The Deal The rain hadn't stopped for three days. It beat against the cracked windows of the little caf'e where Amanda sat. her hands wrapped tightly around a chipped mug of coffee she could barely afford. She stared at the number on her phone screen for the hundredth time that morning-her family's debts, written in black and red. The figure was do high it almost looked like a cruel joke. Her father's voice echoed in her memory: "I tried, Amanda. I really tired. The company is gone. The house will be next." Her chest tightened. The small family construction company had been their pride for years. But now the banks were circling, creditors calling, and her father's health crumbling under the weight of failure. Her mother cried every night, and her younger brother had stopped going to school, ashamed to face his friends. Amanda took a shaky sip of the bitter coffee, wishing she could wake up from this nightmare. That was when the shadow fell across her table. She looked up- and froze. The man who stood before her didn't belong in a place like this. The caf'e was filled with tired workers and broke students. But he was something else entirely-tall, broad- shouldered, dressed in a charcoal suit that probably cost more than the caf'e monthly rent. His sharp features were chiseled, his jawling strong, his dark hair slicked back neatly. His presence commanded attention, and indeed, the other customers had already started sneaking glances at him. His eyes- cold, steel-gray- locked onto hers. "Amanda Wright?" His voice was low, smooth, with a dangerous edge. She swallowed hard." Yes...? Do I know you?" He didn't answer. Instead, he pulled out the chair opposite hers and sat down, placing a leather briefcase on the table. The scent of his cologne, expensive and intoxicating, filled her nose. "I'll get straight to the point," he said, opening the briefcase." Your family owes more money than you can ever repay in this lifetime." Her heart lurched. "How-how do you know that?" "I know everything. "He slid a folder across the table. Inside were copies of loan documents, contracts, even the foreclosure notice for their home. "The Wright family is callapsing. And you, Miss Wright, are the only one left who can save them." Her fingers trembled as she flipped through the papers. " Who are you?" He leaned back, eyes narrowing. "Damon Steele." The name hit her like a thunderclsp. Everyone in the city knew that name. Damon Steele-the ruthless billionaire, CEO of Steele-Enterprises. He had a reputation for buying failing companies, tearing them apart, and selling the pieces for profit. He was feared, respected, and hated all at once. "What do you want with me?" she whispered. A ghost of a smile touched his lips. "Marriage." Amanda almost choked on her coffee. "Excuse me?" "You heard me. I need a wife. " His voice was calm, as if he were discussing the weather. "And you, Miss Wright, need money. it's a mutually beneficial arrangement." Her mouth fell open. This had to be some kind of sick joke. "You-you don't even know me. Why would you." "I don't need to know you." He cut her off sharply. "What I need is a bride. Someone quiet, "obedient, discreet. Someone who won't won't ask questions. You fit the profile." Amanda's cheeks burned. "I'm not some... some piece of property you can buy." Everything has a price, " Damon said coolly. "Even dignity. Even love." She shook her head furiously. " This is insane." But then he slid another paper towards her- a contract. At the bottom, in bold, was the figure he was offering: Five million dollars. Her breath caught in her throat. Five million. Enough to erase every debt, save their home, and rebuild their lives. Damon's gaze never wavered. "One year. You marry me, play the role of Mrs. Steele in public, and at the end of the contract, you walk away with the money. No strings attached." Amanda's thoughts spun wildly. It was madness. Who offered a deal like this? And yet... the image of her father, coughing into his hands as he struggled to sleep on their worn couch, flashed in her mind. Her mother's tear- streaked face. Her brother's silence. She clenched her fists. "Why me? You could have anyone. Models, actresses-" "That's exactly why I don't want them," Damon snapped. For the first time, his mask crack, and she glimpsed something darker, something painful hidden beneath. But it vanished in an instant, his cold composure returning. "I don't need a woman who craves the spotlight. I need someone who won't complicate things." Her pulse hammered in her ears. This was wrong. It was dangerous. Damon Steele was dangerous. And yet, wasn't it also the only way out? "You don't even know if I'll say yes," she said faintly. He smirked. "You will." Amanda's lips parted in protest, but no words come. He was right- and that terrified her more than anything else. Amanda stared at the contract long after Damon Steele had left the caf'e. His scent still lingered in the air, as if mocking her indecision. The bold numbers on the paper burned into her mind: Five million dollars. One year of her life for her father's salvation. She barely slept that night. Every time she closed her eyes, she was her father coughing in his sleep, her mother writing her hands, her brother's hopeless eyes. And then she saw Damon's face-caml,cold, certain. By morning, her choice was made. Two days later, she stood before a set of heavy oak doors, her knees trembling beneath the weight of her decision. The courthouse smelled faintly of her polished wood and old paper. It was not the grand wedding every girl dreamed of. No flowers, no music, no friends or family. Just her, Damon Steele, and the ironclad contact binding them together. "Ready?" Damon's deep voice cut through her thoughts. Amanda glanced up at him. He was immaculate in another expensive suit, his tie perfectly knotted, his posture radiating control. Standing next to him, she felt small, fragile, like a bird trapped in a storm. "No, "she whispered honestly. His lips curved into the faintest smirk. "Good. Fear keeps people obedient." The words sent a chill down her spine, but before she could respond, the doors opened. inside, a judge waited with a clerk, the paperwork arranged everything, fast- tracking the marriage license with frightening efficiency. The ceremony itself was a blur. Her voice shook as she respeated the vows, while Damon's remained steady, cold, as thought this were just another business deal. When the judge declared them husband and wife, he didn't even look at her. He simple slid a platinum ring đź’Ť onto her finger, his expression unreadable. The weight of the band felt like a shackle. And just that, Amanda Wright become Amanda Steele. The black limousine waiting outside gleamed like a predator. Damon ushered her inside, the door shutting with a soft but final click. The interior smelled of leather and faint cologne, a stark contrast to the musty bus seats she was used to. She sat stiffly across from him, her hands twisting in her lap. "Why me?" she finally blurted, unable to contain the question any longer. Damon's gray eyes flicked towards her, sharp as blades. "I already told you. You're ordinary. Unremarkable. That's what makes you useful." Her heart sank. She should have been angry, but the truth was, she'd expected nothing less. To him, she wasn't a person-she was a pawn. "I don't know if I should thank you or hate you," she muttered. His lips twitched. "Neither. Just remember your role. Mrs. Steele in public, silent in private. Do as I say, and you'll get your money."
