The Beta didn’t understand what was going on. He had been hiding close to the cottage, waiting for Vanessa to leave for school, but she still hadn’t come outside. Her room was dark, and he couldn’t see any movement inside. Was she sick? Did she not go to school today? If he wanted to get this job done, he had figured it would be easiest at the point when she was at school and he could be sure she wouldn’t come back for a couple of hours at least. That’s why he was here so early in the first place, to make sure she left. But she didn’t.
