Chapter 1: The Golden Cage
The rain lashed violently against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Blackburn estate, mirroring the storm raging inside Elena Vance’s chest. She gripped the edges of her cheap, faded denim skirt, her knuckles turning stark white. She refused to look down at the heavy bond paper resting on the mahogany desk. More than that, she refused to look at the man sitting behind it. Ethan Blackburn. The media called him the King of Wall Street. The tabloids called him the Heartless Bachelor. Up close, he looked like a dangerous god sculpted from dark marble—sharp jawline, midnight-black hair styled with military precision, and eyes so intensely gray they looked like ice over a frozen lake. He didn’t look at Elena like she was a human being. He looked at her like a minor corporate asset he had just acquired on clearance. "Sign it, Elena." His voice was a low, smooth baritone that sent an involuntary shiver down her spine. It wasn’t a request. It was a command wrapped in silk. "My stepfather's debts..." Elena’s voice trembled, but she forced herself to keep her chin up. She wouldn’t let him see her cry. "If I sign this, you promise the loan sharks will never touch my family again? You promise the millions he owes will vanish tonight?" Ethan leaned forward, resting his forearms on the desk. The subtle, intimidating scent of expensive cedarwood and rain drifted toward her. "The moment your signature hits that paper, the Vance family debt is erased. The thugs waiting outside your mother’s apartment will disappear. Her hospital bills will be paid in full by my private foundation." He paused, a cruel, devastating smirk playing on his lips. "But you know my terms. Nothing in my world is free." Elena swallowed the lump of pride burning in her throat. She knew the terms. They were spelled out in a neat, terrifying font on page four of the contract: The party of the second part shall enter into a legal marriage with the party of the first part for a duration of exactly 365 days. Cohabitation is mandatory. Public displays of affection are required for the media. Emotional attachment is strictly prohibited. "Why me?" she whispered, the question tearing at her secrets. "You are Ethan Blackburn. You could choose any supermodel, any billionaire heiress in the world to satisfy your grandfather's inheritance clause. Why force a broke student into your house?" Ethan stood up. His towering six-foot-two frame instantly cast a long shadow over her. He walked around the desk, his footsteps silent against the plush Persian rug, stopping just inches away from her. The sheer heat radiating from his body made her want to take a step back, but she rooted her feet to the floor. He reached out. His long, leather-gloved fingers gently caught her jaw, forcing her to tilt her face upward. His touch felt electric, burning against her ice-cold skin. "Because supermodels have families with expectations. Heiresses have corporations that want a piece of mine," Ethan murmured, his gray eyes darkening with a dangerous intensity. "But you, Elena? You have nothing. No power, no allies, and absolutely nowhere else to run. You are entirely at my mercy. And that makes you the perfect, quiet bride." He dropped his hand, leaving her skin tingling in his wake. Picking up a sleek, heavy gold fountain pen from the desk, he pressed it into her trembling hand. "Sign the contract, Elena. Save your mother. But remember..." He leaned down, his breath brushing against her ear, sending a jolt of pure adrenaline through her veins. "...for the next year, body and soul, you belong to me." With a shaky breath and tears blurring her vision, Elena pressed the pen to the paper. She didn't just sign a contract. She sold herself to the devil. As the ink dried, Ethan pulled the paper away and checked his platinum watch. "Your belongings have already been moved to the master suite. Welcome to your new life, Mrs. Blackburn." Before she could even process the heavy weight of her new last name, a loud crash echoed from the hallway outside.
