The Mekong carries more than water. It carries secrets, prayers, and echoes of lives once lived. Along its banks, people have released banana-leaf boats lit with candles, whispering wishes into the current for generations. Some prayers vanish. Some promises return. Over a century ago, when French colonial power reached into Laos, a young soldier named Étienne stepped ashore in Luang Prabang. There he met Khamla, a village girl whose spirit was as unyielding as the river itself.
