They stayed hidden for only a few seconds before the wall cracked behind them. Lia screamed and ran again, dragging Kai with her.
“Does this happen often?” she yelled.
“Not on first meetings!” Kai replied, vaulting over a trash bin.
They burst into a crowded market. Vendors shouted. Fruit rolled everywhere as Lia pulled Kai behind a stall.
A man waved a broom. “You break it, you buy it!”
“Add it to my regrets!” Lia said.
Kai leaned close. “You trust me?”
“No.”
“Perfect. Jump on three.”
“One—”
“Why—”
“Three!”
They leaped, barely clearing the stall and crashing into crates. They laughed despite everything.
They finally ducked into an abandoned building. Lia crossed her arms. “Okay. Talk. Why are trained villains chasing us?”
Kai hesitated. “I stole something important.”
Her eye twitched. “Of course you did.”
“They wanted to use it for bad things,” he said softly.
Footsteps echoed outside.
Kai met her eyes. “If we split up, they’ll catch you too.”
Lia sighed. “I wanted a normal day.”
Kai smiled. “I wanted to meet you.”
She didn’t know why, but she stayed.
