Inside the building, Kai pulled out a small metal case. It hummed faintly.
Lia froze. “Why is it making noise.”
“It’s advanced tech,” Kai said. “And… sensitive.”
“Sensitive like feelings or sensitive like explosions?”
“Yes.”
The humming grew louder as footsteps approached.
Kai explained quickly. “It controls city defense systems. They planned to sell it.”
Lia swallowed. “So now they’re chasing us.”
“Mostly me,” he said. “But you’re involved now.”
A crash shook the door.
Kai grabbed her hand. “I won’t force you to stay.”
Lia looked at his grip. Warm. Steady.
She sighed. “I hate chaos.”
“But?” Kai asked.
“But I hate bullies more,” she said. “Let’s fix this.”
Kai smiled, relieved.
They ran upstairs toward the roof as the building trembled.
For the first time, Lia realized something terrifying.
