MAYA
Sera’s my best friend, but she’s also got a massive crush on Damon. Has since we were teenagers. And she’s always been competitive with me about everything.
I watch as she climbs out of her car, wearing a tiny dress that barely covers anything. Three unmated males from our pack are with her—Tyler, Brock, and Mason. All of them strong, good-looking, probably here because they can smell me even from outside the gates.
“I didn’t invite them,” I say quickly.
“I know.” Damon’s voice is tight. “But we can’t turn them away without causing issues. They’re pack.”
Sera’s already knocking on the door, her voice calling out. “Maya! I know you’re in there! Come on, let us in!”
Damon looks at me, and I can see the frustration in his eyes. “Get dressed. Something that covers more skin. Now.”
The Alpha command in his voice makes my wolf want to obey immediately, but I resist. “You don’t get to tell me what to wear.”
“Maya.” He steps closer, his eyes gold now, his wolf right at the surface. “Get. Dressed. Unless you want every unmated male out there smelling exactly how aroused you are.”
Heat floods my face. He’s right—I’m probably broadcasting pheromones like crazy right now.
“Fine.”
I run upstairs and change into jeans and an actual full-length t-shirt, then reluctantly head back down.
Damon’s already let them in. Sera’s in the living room, draped artfully across the couch, and the three males are standing around trying not to look like they’re scenting the air.
“Maya!” Sera bounces up and hugs me, but her eyes are on Damon. “I hope you don’t mind us dropping by. I wanted to check on you, make sure you weren’t lonely with your parents gone.”
“I’m fine,” I say, trying to keep the irritation out of my voice. “Damon’s here.”
“Oh, I know.” She gives him a smile that’s pure invitation. “Hi, Alpha Kane. It’s been so long since we’ve seen you.”
“Sera.” He nods politely but doesn’t move from where he’s standing, arms crossed, clearly unhappy about this situation.
Tyler steps forward, his eyes on me. “We thought maybe you’d want to hang out, Maya. We could go into town, catch a movie or something.”
“The Alpha’s daughter doesn’t need to leave the estate right now,” Damon says, his voice hard. “Not this close to the full moon.”
“We’d keep her safe,” Brock offers, also looking at me with too much interest.
Damon’s eyes flash. “No.”
The word comes out as a growl, pure Alpha dominance, and all three males immediately back down, lowering their eyes.
Sera notices though. I see her eyes narrow as she looks between me and Damon.
“Well, we could hang out here then,” she suggests. “Maybe order lunch, watch a movie. It’ll be fun!”
I don’t want them here. Want them to leave so I can get back to pushing Damon’s buttons.
But I can’t say that without explaining why.
“Sure,” I say instead, forcing a smile. “That sounds great.”
Damon’s eyes meet mine, and I can see the question there. I give a tiny shrug. What else can I do?
The next three hours are torture.
Sera’s all over Damon, finding excuses to touch his arm, laugh at things he says, lean in close. The three males keep trying to talk to me, to get my attention, standing too close and scenting the air.
Damon’s getting more and more tense, his jaw clenched, his eyes tracking every time one of the males moves closer to me.
Around two in the afternoon, Mason suggests we all go for a run in wolf form.
“The woods around the estate are perfect,” he says, looking at me. “And it might help with the restlessness. Full moon’s only two days away now.”
“That’s not a good idea,” Damon says immediately.
“Why not?” Sera asks, tilting her head. “Maya loves to run. And she’ll be safe with all of us there.”
“She’ll be safe right here.”
“Come on, Alpha Kane,” Tyler says, trying to sound reasonable. “What could happen? We’re all pack. We just want to…”
“No.” Damon’s voice drops into full Alpha command. “The answer is no. Maya stays here.”
I can see the males bristle at the command, confused about why Damon’s being so protective. Sera’s watching with way too much interest.
“It’s okay,” I say quickly, trying to diffuse the tension. “I don’t really feel like running anyway. Maybe we could just watch another movie or something?”
But the damage is done. They’re all looking at Damon with questions in their eyes, wondering why he’s acting like a jealous mate instead of just a family friend.
Sera’s eyes are practically gleaming with suspicion.
This is bad.
