The Event

1047 Words
When we got to the dance, we headed to the room it was being held. A staff member stamped each of our hands, then we headed to our table. Once we got sat down, as this dance was also a luncheon, the teacher went over the rules, which turned out just to be a joke. His rule was we could only hold the hands of the people we danced with. Then, I raised the concern of what if it was a slow dance. Then him and the aide of his class that came with us look at each other and she say.s "its up to you." then he just looks at me. Then, we sit there a few minutes longer, and a waiter comes by to get our drink orders. I order a pepsi. Because Pepsi is my favorite soda. Then, as the dance floor opens he dismisses us. I slowly step out onto the dance floor. As I get warmed up, I hear probably the most heartbreaking words that I ever thought I would hear. "who will dance with me?" I immediately whirl around to where I heard her voice come from and lock eyes with probably the prettiest girl that I've ever seen! I will note, that she DID come with a date, but they somehow got separated. Of course, I was not aware of this at the time. Did I fall in love with her at first sight? Sort of. The second I locked eyes with her, she had me in a trance. Clay Aiken's "The Way" started playing, in my head. And I kept my eyes on her the whole time as she walked toward me. As she got close to me, I raised my hands in a position for her to take. Which she did, slowly. I then said hi and she said hi. Then we began dancing. During my time with her, a chaperon from her school approaches us, wanting to take a picture. She first takes a picture with her phone. Then, I pull my phone out of my pocket and ask the lady if she would mind taking a picture with mine as well. Because I wanted to be able to remember this day for the rest of my life. The lady was more than willing to do so. So, after she gets the picture with her phone she takes my phone, then I show her how my camera works. Then she takes a picture for me. Then hands my phone back to me and walks away. The girl and I then get back to dancing. A slow song then comes on. As this happens, I begin to panic, not realizing that the life skills teacher was joking about only holding hands with the people we dance with. Before I have the chance to say something, she wraps her arms around my neck. I go with the flow, wrapping my arms around her lower back and nestling my head into her chest. As the song flows, suddenly I hear a voice say "She's mine." I look down to where I heard the voice come from. I then see a guy about a foot or two shorter than me, he says it again, but the music is so loud that I can't hear him. So, the girl and I continue to dance. Eventually, the kid gives up and walks away. As the song comes to an end, the girl and I pull apart. Then the music stops completely, signaling it's time for the luncheon. I grin, having had the time of my life, feeling horrible that I just stole a girl from her date for the first half of the dance, I still work up the courage to ask the girl if she would want to dance with me again, she nods and we part ways. I head back to our table. Wondering what, if anything, the girl has against her date. Does she not like him, and she was forced to come with a date? I shake my head, many questions remaining unanswered. After the luncheon, once the dance floor opens back up, I step back out onto the dance floor, its filling up fast, so I become worried that the girl may not find me in the giant crowd. But she does. Of course, her date comes back this time with the chaperon that took our picture earlier. The chaperon doesn't seem to happy with the girl for ditching her date and dancing with me. However, she reunites them, then gives me the hand of another girl who introduces herself to me. Dancing with the new girl was not as fun as dancing with the other girl, because this new girl was a lot more shy, but its whatever. As the event comes to a close, I approach the first girl, the one who lost her date but was reunited with him in the end, and ask for her phone number so we could stay in touch as friends. Unfortunately she didn't have her phone with her at the time, so that didn't happen. But, at least I had that picture to remember her by. Sadly the word is "had" I've since lost it as it never backed up to the cloud. So, I no longer have it. But, I will admit, when we got back on the bus, and I looked at the photo, it almost made me cry. Because the girl had placed both her hands on my right shoulder, and sort of snuggled into me. Which kind of makes me question if she didn't feel safe with her date and was trying to get away from him and that's why she was being so clingy with me. Now, I know what you all are thinking right now, "you flew through the story, shouldn't you have saved some of the juicy stuff for the end?" Don't worry, I'm not going to make this only a 2-chapter book. There is a lot more to come. Because, ever since that event, over the past several years, that memory continues to come back to me off and on, so throughout this book, I'll be sharing the memories that have come back to me and how they make me feel.
