The Beginning
It all started back in high school. It was either during a passing period between classes or during a lunch period. Our school has a class called Life Skills. It's for kids with disabilities. That's beside the point though, every year, the life skills class is invited to one of our local casinos for a dance that they host. You'd think that I couldn't care less about it. Until the life skills teacher made a brutal mistake when it came to the topic of the dance.
Me and my friend were just walking around. Being the dorks that we always are, then we notice the teacher standing outside his classroom. Let me note that my friend is in this class. Here's where the brutal mistake comes into play. Another one of my friends, who is NOT in his class, walks by. The teacher stops her and invites her to come to the dance! Please note that this dance is strictly for the life skills class. So, when my friend saw his teacher do this, although he kept his cool, he got quite upset.
So, my friend and I walked up to the teacher. Then my friend, still calm and collected, mentions that he feels that its a little unfair that he invited my friend to come to the dance, but didn't invite me. The teacher, finally noticing his brutal mistake, thinks for a second. Then says he will make a call to the casino and see if I can be added to the list. Satisfied with that result, me and my friend walk away. I grin, keeping my fingers crossed for a positive outcome.
I go through the rest of the school day, feeling a bit jittery, barely able to focus in the rest of my classes. But, I manage to make it to 6th period. Due to the type of bus route I'm assigned to, I'm lucky enough to get to be excused from class early. So, I take a seat at an open desk. Class starts. I periodically check the clock, wondering when the big moment will come. Then, 2:10 rolls around, there's a knock at the door. My teacher answers it, sure enough, it's the life skills teacher.
He motions for me to come with him. I oblige, excited. As I exit the room, he closes the door behind me, then, as we begin to walk, heading toward the bus, he lowers his voice, so we don't disturb the other classes. He then tells me that the dance people allowed me to be added. Knowing I need to remain calm, I do a little celebratory yell in my head. Then, on the way to the bus, we make a quick pit stop at his classroom to pick up the permission slip so that I can get it signed by my mom.
The dance isn't until the day after next. So, I take the permission slip home, my mom signs it, I then take it back in and hand it to the life skills teacher. I then spend the day letting my teachers know that I won't be in class the following day due to being at the dance. They are very understanding and tell me to have fun.
