Chapter One Adelaide Jackson
I had just graduated from law school, but my best friend's father, Ronald James Dalton, who runs one of the most prestigious legal firms, had recruited me on the spot since I had earned so much experience working as a secretary for him while in school.
Ronnie Dalton was his daughter and has been my best friend since we were babies; our mothers were best friends, they ended up pregnant with both of us at the same time. My father and her father were also close friends. We were born a day apart and grew up together, so it's no surprise that we are so close today.
My parents died in a fire at their company when I was four years old, leaving my brother and me behind, and her parents took us in and nurtured us as their own children. My brother has now taken over our parents' business, while I went to school. Sebastian was only 15 years old when our parents died, but Mr. Dalton saw to it that our parents' business was recovered in the meantime.
When Sebastian reached eighteen, he made it a goal to attend the best business school and obtain all of the required knowledge to take care of our parents' company. He worked tirelessly to build Jackson Enterprises into the success it is today with of course the help of Ronald.
Even in the middle of our hardships, we had a good existence. I went to school and decided that I wanted to be a lawyer; Sebastian was put off by this since he wanted his younger sister to lead our family's business with him, but I had my own ambitions.
I couldn't imagine spending my days designing military software and sitting in front of a computer. I wanted to defend individuals and use my excellent debating talents. Just I have yet to tell Sebastian that..
Sebastian is still the overprotective older brother, even at the age of thirty-three, which means there is no dating life here unless he approves. which brings me to Mike Huntley, my fiancé, we met in my freshman year of college, and we've been together ever since as far as Sebastian knows.
I attempted to keep our relationship a secret from my brother, but when he found out, I assumed he'd ruin it as he always does when a guy shows interest in me. But he liked him, and we've been together since then. He proposed to me in a café outside the college campus during our senior year, and I, of course, said yes, despite my brother's opposition to our engagement.
Ronnie took up her mother's business when she died a few years before I started college. Since her father couldn't handle both his firm and Dalton Tech. She took over Dalton Tech and rose to become the company's successful CEO.
Ronnie's mother arranged an annual charity ball; all the money raised goes to orphans and nonprofit organizations; her mother was an orphan, so this was extremely meaningful to her. She cherished this occasion and eagerly anticipated it each year.
Mr. Dalton has been organizing and putting it all together for the last few years. But this year it's Ronnies' time; she's been worried about it every year since her mother died, mainly because she was afraid of messing up.
I got into my black beetle and headed to Mike's place, hoping he hadn't forgotten about today, so we could just go shopping and get it over with, so I could assist Ronnie. My phone rang just as I was about to pull into his driveway at a red light.
It was Ronnie, and I scooped up my phone, pressing the green answer button as she inquired, 'Where are you?' in an anxious tone. "I'm almost to Mike's, why?" 'What's up?' I responded as I noticed the light change.
I accelerated down his lengthy driveway, pulled over before she could ask, "How long do you suppose you'll be?" Her anguish was evident to me. "Is everything all right?" I asked all while almost dropping my phone when it vibrated, with which I assumed a text from Mike. "Not much," she said, "I still need to locate a DJ."
I knew she wasn't on good terms with Alex, so I avoided becoming too involved.
But he was a terrific DJ and the only one we knew; I mean, she has other contacts and everything, but with such a short period, there aren't many possibilities. "So, what are your plans?" I inquired despite the fact that I knew there was nothing else she could do. "I'm going to have to swallow my pride and ask Alex if he'll do it," she groaned. "It's about time you two made up," I said, shaking my head and rolling my eyes.
"Whatever, I won't be able to find anyone else." She was irritated, but continued, "but when you're free, I could really use your help." "Yeah, I'll be there as soon as I can, I just have to get my dress," I chuckled. Ronnie chuckled then sighed "Well, I'll see you later then", I pulled into the yard of Mike's house and parked.
"Yeah I will be quick," I said, hanging up the phone. Before I got out of the car, I noticed another car was parked next to Mike's car and my heart immediately sank upon realizing whose car it was.
I tried to convince myself I was just being paranoid, but when I looked at my phone I saw the text from Mike that read "Hey babe I had to run errands for my dad. Won't have time to shop for an outfit" My heart sank reading that I could feel my chest tighten. I wasn't sure what to do I knew I had two options. At this point, I could walk into the house and catch him or drive away and text him saying we're done. I took a deep breath, I knew I had to enter that house. It was the only way he couldn't deny it to my face.
I got out of the car and pulled myself together and channeled all the anger I felt at that moment. I opened the door and could hear their noises of pleasure and moaning echoing through the halls. It erased all the sadness I felt earlier. I was now ready to kill him.
I ran to the door to his bedroom and busted it open. Brittany screamed and got off of him and sat on the bed looking at me, shocked, trying to cover herself. Mike was looking at me like I saw a freaking ghost. "So f*****g Brittany was the errand your dad asked you to run?" Mike jumped out of the bed and started putting clothes on franticly. "No this isn't-" I cut him off before he finished "Don't you you even say that! Don't you dare tell me this isn't what I think. Are you stupid? I saw it with my own eyes, Mike." I said my heart now sinking. I felt like I wanted to cry, but I wouldn't give him that.
"Addie, I am so sorry" Mike said, trying to walk over to me. I took a step back, and before I could say anything Brittany finally spoke up. "Just be honest with her, Mike, she deserves to know" Brittany said, trying to dress while still covering herself with the blanket. I looked over at Brittany. "What do you mean?" I asked, and Mike glared at Brittany. "Don't you dare" he warned her, but she rolled her eyes at him and looked at me now clothed "look we have been seeing one another this whole time" she said, unfazed by how angry Mike looked at her.
