Rhea's POV
“This is a completely new place for her and it's her first night here so she couldn't sleep and was feeling uncomfortable. That's why I had to stay with her. I couldn't just leave her like that.”
That was Damon's explanation for leaving me and going to her last night when I saw him the next morning.
“It's fine. You can't help it, she's your mate after all. Who am I to feel bad about where you spend the night?,” I said solemnly avoiding his eyes.
He sighed before grabbing my face and placing a kiss on my forehead.
“I'm trying to sort out a way we can make this work okay. I'm sorry for constantly putting you in this situation but please promise me you won't leave,” he questioned softly.
My head reasoned within me to just tell him I had enough and wanted to leave but my heart fought against it. I truly loved Damon despite not being his fated mate and if he wanted to try and make things work, there was no harm in trying. I reached out to him pulling him in a warm embrace, resting my head at the crook of his neck.
“I promise I won't leave. Instead promise you won't leave me too. I know she's your mate blessed by the moon goddess and I don't even stand a chance against her but I'm willing to see how things go between us”
“I won't leave you. Make sure to keep your promise,” he murmured and I nodded in reply.
But things just kept going downhill from there. Over the next couple of weeks, I saw less and less of Damon. He stopped spending as much time as he used to with me. Now I only see him when he's on pack duty or when we are all having dinner together and even then he always pays attention to the girl whom I now know as Beatrice.
He had even stopped sleeping in our room and he practically spends all the days he isn't working with her. It was almost like I barely existed anymore. I shook my head trying to clear the thoughts out of my head. I couldn't make the thought of them spoil my mood. I dressed up to go down for dinner, already cradling my rumbling stomach.
The only reason why I was still allowed to have dinner with the family was because Damon's aunt, Aunt Ruth adored me. Besides Damon she was the closest person to me in the house and was one of the reasons I still stayed here. The house was becoming suffocating with everyone tiptoeing around me and giving me pity looks. It was getting annoying to feel so unwanted.
I took a deep breath and grabbed my phone before heading downstairs. I stopped at the doorway when I heard laughter coming from the dining room.
“Isn't she so wonderful, mother?. I've never met someone like her before,” I heard Damon praising Beatrice while his mother, Luna Susan giggled lightly.
“Yes she is dear. It's a pity we didn't meet her soon enough,” Luna Susan replied.
“Thank you Luna Susan,” Beatrice uttered shyly.
“Oh no, call me mother. You're are technically already my daughter in law so no need to be so formal with me dear”
Ouch. Damon's mother's words hurt me a little more than I imagined it would. She had never told me to call her mother although I had known her longer than Beatrice. It was no secret that she was on Beatrice's side.
Although neither of Damon's parents had ever said anything about it they didn't like the fact that Damon had chosen me to be by his side instead of waiting for his fated mate. Just like every other person in the pack they had believed crowning a Luna that wasn't the fated mate of the alpha would bring tragedy to the pack. So I'm not even surprised that she had accepted Beatrice wholeheartedly.
I couldn't keep on standing there any longer so it was either I go into the battlefield or go upstairs hungry. I decided to do the former and walked into the room gingerly and like always all conversations stopped and everyone grew quiet as soon as I walked in, but that didn't shock me. What did was seeing Beatrice sitting comfortably cozy next to Damon exactly where I used to sit. I stood there for a minute not knowing what to do.
“Come on dear. Come sit with me,” Damon's aunt, Aunt Ruth beckoned to me to sit at her side. I smiled at her, grateful for her help. Everyone stayed quiet for a while until Beatrice broke the silence.
“Ria right. Hi, I've heard so many things about you from Damon,” she said so sweetly it almost made me gag.
“It's Rhea and that's great. I could say the same about you too. I've heard so many nice things about you too,” I mirrored her before taking a bite of my food. A look of surprise, then anger crossed her face before she masked it quickly with a smile.
“I don't have an appetite anymore. I'll just go upstairs to my room and take a nap,” Beatrice muttered, pushing her chair backwards as she stood up to leave.
“Are you feeling okay?. You suddenly look pale. Was the food not to your liking?,” Damon questioned softly fawning over her with a look of concern on his face. The scene almost made me want to stab my eyes with my fork so I wouldn't be able to witness it.
I scoffed. So now he's not even trying to hide his affection and love for her anymore in front of me.
“I'm fine. I'm just tired and a little stressed with everything. Can you escort me to my room if it's okay with Rhea,” she said sardonically, taunting me, turning everyone's attention once again towards me.
I could almost feel their piercing and taunting gaze staring at me and I suddenly felt sick to my stomach. How can a house I had once called home suddenly feel so lonely and cold. I tried my best to remain unaffected and tried to paste a smile on my face.
“I don't think you need my permission for that after all you are his mate. I am also no longer hungry. Excuse me,” I uttered nonchalantly then pushed my chair backwards and ran out of the dining room.
I couldn't bear being in there any second without feeling suffocating. As I got to our…well my room now, a feeling of loneliness and emptiness settled in the pit of my stomach as I looked around the room. It had once been a place of haven for me and a reminder of Damon's love but now it suddenly felt cold.
He could no longer fulfill all the promises he'd made to me before and now she has taken my place in his life. There was no room for me anymore. I knew in that instant that I had to leave. I couldn't stay here any longer feeling unwanted and pitied by everyone. I didn't care where I stayed as long as it was away from the both of them. I wiped a lone tear of my face weeping for the end of my once perfect relationship.
