Rhea's POV
After finally making up my mind I was about to walk towards the closet to start packing when I heard a knock at the door.
“Can I come in dear?,” Aunt Ruth’s voice came through from behind the door and I quickly wiped away my tears.
“Yes of course Aunt Ruth please come in,” I beckoned her in and she came in with a smile closing the door behind her.
“How have you been holding up dear,” she questioned inquisitively with caring eyes.
“You don't have to worry about me. I'll be fine,” I murmured trying to shrug it off lightly.
She sighed. “Sometimes I don't know what's wrong with this family. In my opinion you're obviously so much better than her but because she's his mate she was quickly accepted. I don't like the way she's always pretending to be so sweet and kind and have everyone fawning over her. Anybody that sweet is definitely faking it,” she said scrunching up her nose in disgust.
“Thanks for supporting me Aunt Ruth but now it doesn't even matter anymore. She is his fated mate and they are bound by the moon goddess and I'm just a chosen mate he no longer cares for.” I stopped trying to catch my breath and compose myself. “So I have decided to leave the house and Damon alone,” I said bluntly and we both went silent for a while.
“Listen Rhea. I won't stop you if you want to leave this house but I will still say you should wait for a few more days. The only reason Damon is fond of her is because he just met now so of course he will be drawn to her. He chose you because he loves you and if he still hasn't let you go, it's because he loves you. Give it a few more days and if he still chooses her then I will let you leave whenever you want,” She cajoled.
“I really don't know Aunt Ruth. I'm just tired of feeling unwanted”
“Okay then why don't you take your mind off Damon by going with me somewhere,” she said, pulling out an envelope from her purse.
“Take this. It's an invitation to the Black moon pack's gala that's in three days. You know how powerful the black moon pack is and every alpha and Luna will be there, even the Alpha king and his son. I was supposed to go with my husband but he's feeling under the weather so I decided to go with you instead. Who knows you can even meet your mate there and be able to move on from Damon,” she uttered.
“I don't know Aunt Ruth. I'm not really in the mood for a party but if you insist I'll go to keep you company,” I agreed and she giggled excitedly.
We continued to talk about random things till she became tired and left for the night. It was nice of Aunt Ruth to try and cheer me up but going to a party was the last thing I wanted to do right now. I sighed and stared at the invitation card in my hands, before placing it down by the nightstand.
Just then Damon walked into the room and smiled at me.
“Rhea my love. I have missed you,” he murmured as he tried to place a kiss on my lips but I turned my face away.
I looked up at him in surprise. So he was going to act like I didn't exist one day then come into my room and expect for me to welcome him with open hands the next day.
He stared at me with a frown, then sighed and sat on the bed.
“Well I want to talk to you about something,” he began uneasily. “And I want you to be reasonable about it,” he finished and waited for me to reply and frowned again when I didn't respond.
“There is a gala coming up and I only have two invitation cards, one for myself and one for my date. I was going to take you but Beatrice really wants to go and since we have been to so many parties together I was hoping you could sit this one out and let her go with me. Instead I promise I'll make it up to you,” he muttered and I scoffed. The audacity he had to come to my room and tell me all this. To think the first time he is having a proper conversation with me in days and it's still about Beatrice. I snapped.
“You don't need to bother making it up to me because I wasn't planning on going with you anyway. Aunt Ruth already invited me and I'll be going with her and after that I'll leave this house so you and your mate can live together happily,” I said angrily, through gritted teeth.
“What did you say?. You're leaving,” Damon asked as I stood up to leave the room but he held my hands and wouldn't let me go.
“You promised you wouldn't leave me. I thought we agreed on that,” he muttered as he pulled me in a back hug.
“You also promised not to leave me but you already left me. You don't even care about me anymore,” I crumbled as tears fell down my cheeks and his face softened as he wrapped his hands around me.
“I love you Rhea. Things are just too complicated right now but I promise I'll handle things. You're not allowed to leave me, you hear,” he murmured quietly.
“You don't even sleep in this room anymore so why should I still be here,” I questioned softly and he sighed.
“I'm sorry. Okay why don't I stay here tonight. I promise to make it up to you just don't leave me okay. I'll…,” Just then, Beatrice let out a blood curdling scream and I felt his whole body tense in response. I let out a sigh as I pulled away from him.
“You can go check on her if you want to,” I mumbled then flashed him a smile as he kissed my cheeks then ran off to meet her. I followed closely behind him and saw him cuddling and holding her like she was the most precious thing in the world. I stood there for a while and let out a final tear.
It was obvious I was getting in the way of their happiness and as much as I still loved Damon, he was no longer the one for me anymore. I started to move back towards my room when I saw Beatrice looking at me with a smirk on her face, her previous overly kind face now contorted into a mask of triumph as she looked at me.
