PROLOGUE: THE BITE
The forest was Michael’s sanctuary, a place where he could escape the mundanity of his life as a park ranger. At 35, he lived in a modest cabin on the edge of Hollow Pine Forest, far from the bustling city he had once dreamed of conquering. His days were filled with routine: patrolling the forest, fixing broken trails, and occasionally rescuing hikers who got lost. Michael had always believed he was destined for something greater, but life had never given him the opportunity. The frustration gnawed at him, especially as he watched friends and family move on to bigger and better things. He told himself he was content with his quiet life, but deep down, he craved more. On this particular evening, the forest was unusually still. The wind barely stirred, and the usual chorus of crickets and owls was absent. Michael felt the weight of the silence pressing down on him as he walked the trail, his flashlight cutting through the darkness. Michael froze when he heard a low growl ahead. His hand instinctively went to the tranquilizer gun strapped to his belt. Stepping cautiously, he followed the sound until his flashlight beam landed on a large wolf lying in the middle of the trail. The creature was massive, its fur matted with blood. Its golden eyes glowed faintly in the light, filled with pain and defiance. Michael’s heart raced. Wolves weren’t common in Hollow Pine, and this one looked far more imposing than any wolf he’d seen in documentaries. "Easy there," Michael said softly, lowering his flashlight. "I’m not going to hurt you." He knelt down, trying to assess the wolf’s injuries. Its front leg was twisted unnaturally, and there were deep gashes along its side. Michael reached for his radio to call for animal control but hesitated. Something about the wolf’s gaze held him captive, as if it were trying to communicate. “Hang on,” he murmured, setting the radio aside. “I’ll help you.” As he reached out, the wolf lunged. Pain exploded in his arm as the wolf’s teeth sank into his flesh. Michael screamed and stumbled backward, clutching his bleeding arm. The wolf stared at him for a moment, its golden eyes burning brighter, before it limped off into the darkness. Michael barely made it back to his cabin, his arm wrapped in a makeshift bandage. The bite throbbed, but what worried him more was the fever that set in a few hours later. He tossed and turned in bed, his body drenched in sweat. That night, he dreamed of running through the forest, his senses sharper than ever before. He could smell the damp earth, hear the rustling of leaves, and feel the wind against his skin. In his dream, he wasn’t human—he was something primal, something powerful. When he woke, the fever was gone, but something felt... off. Over the next few days, Michael noticed changes. His hearing became unnaturally sharp, picking up the faintest sounds. He could smell things miles away—the scent of pine, the musk of animals, the metallic tang of blood. His strength increased, too; he accidentally broke the handle off his coffee mug one morning. Then came the rage. Small annoyances, like spilling coffee or tripping over his boots, would send him into uncontrollable fits of anger. His reflection in the mirror seemed different—his eyes appeared brighter, more golden, and his teeth sharper. The first full moon after the bite arrived, and Michael’s world turned upside down. He had spent the evening in his cabin, trying to ignore the strange restlessness coursing through his body. But as the moon rose, an unbearable pain wracked his body. His bones felt like they were breaking and reassembling themselves. His skin burned, and his muscles rippled as they grew. Michael fell to the floor, screaming. His hands twisted into claws, his teeth elongated into fangs, and fur sprouted across his body. When the transformation was complete, he stood on all fours, his mind a chaotic mix of human thoughts and animal instincts. Driven by an overwhelming urge to hunt, Michael crashed through the door of his cabin and sprinted into the forest. The night was alive with sounds and scents, and he felt a thrill he’d never experienced before. He was no longer just Michael—he was a predator, powerful and free. Michael woke up in a clearing, naked and covered in blood. His heart pounded as he tried to piece together what had happened. Flashes of the previous night came back to him: chasing deer, howling at the moon, and tearing into something with his teeth. Staggering back to his cabin, Michael tried to convince himself it was all a nightmare. But the evidence was undeniable: the claw marks on his door, the shredded clothes on his floor, and the gnawing hunger deep in his gut. As he stared at his reflection in the mirror, his golden eyes stared back. He wasn’t human anymore.
